Silicene, the 2D silicon allotrope analogue of graphene, was theoretically predicted in 1994 as a metastable buckled honeycomb silicon monolayer. Similarly to its carbon counterpart it was predicted to present an electronic structure hosting Dirac cones. In the last decade a great deal of work has been done to synthesize silicene and exploit its properties. In this paper we will review our research group activity in the field, dealing in particular with silicon-substrate interaction upon silicon deposition, and discuss the still debated silicene formation starting from the chemistry of silicon unsaturated compounds.Topological nodal line (TNL) materials with one-dimensional band-crossing points (BCPs) exhibit interesting electronic characteristics and have special applications in electronic devices. Normally, based on the slopes of the crossing bands, the BCPs can be divided into two types, i.e., type I and type II nodal points. Based on the combination of the different types of nodal points, the nodal lines (NLs) can be divided into three categories (i) type I NL, type II NL, and hybrid NL, these being formed by type I nodal points, type II nodal points, and type I and II nodal points, respectively. Compared with the large number of predicted type I NL materials, there are less type II and hybrid NL materials. In this study, it is predicted for the first time, that P63/mmc type TiSe metal is a topological material which exhibits all types of NL states. Furthermore, the dynamic stability as well as the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the topological signatures are examined. Also, the nontrivial surface states are shown to provide evidence for the occurrence of the NL states. This novel material can be seen as a good platform to use for further investigations on the three types of NLs and diverse fermions.A colorimetric and turn-on fluorometric assay with high sensitivity and selectivity is described for the optical detection of mercury (II) ions (Hg2+), based on carbon dots with -SH (SN-CDs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). On addition of Hg2+, the color of the system (SN-CDs/AuNPs) changes from red to blue. A new absorption peak appears at 700 nm, and its absorbance increases with the concentration of Hg2+, while at 530 nm, the absorbance of AuNPs decreases. Taking the ratio of absorbance at 700 and 530 nm as a signal, a colorimetric method with linear detection range of 0.5-4.0 μM was established for the determination of Hg2+. Meanwhile, citrate ions on the surface of AuNPs can reduce Hg2+ to Hg0, and through the strong affinity of Hg0 and gold, gold-mercury alloys were formed to occupy the surface of AuNPs, so that the SN-CDs were re-free and the fluorescence of SN-CDs was restored. Consequently, a fluorometric method was founded in the linear detection range from 0.5 to 15.0 μM of mercury (II). This dual-mode (colorimetric and turn-on fluorometric) method was applied successfully for determination of Hg2+ in real water samples.Transition metal stannides are usually semiconductors with a narrow band gap. We report experimental investigation on metallic Ir3Sn7-xMn x (x= 0 and 0.56). Single crystal x-ray diffraction refinement indicates that Ir3Sn7-xMn x crystals form a cubic structure (space groupIm-3m) with the lattice parametera= 9.362(4) Å forx= 0 and 9.328(6) Å forx= 0.56. The electrical resistivity shows metallic behavior between 2 K and 300 K withT2dependence atT less then 30 K forx= 0, reflecting the Fermi-liquid ground state. While Ir3Sn7exhibits weak diamagnetism, partial substitution of Sn by Mn results in spin glass behavior in Ir3Sn7-xMn x withTg~ 13 K forx= 0.56. Remarkably, an upturn in the resistivity is observed inx= 0.56 below ~2Tg, suggesting strong spin fluctuations. This fluctuation is suppressed by the application of magnetic field, which is reflected in the observation of negative magnetoresistance. The unusual properties that emerge due to Mn doping are discussed further below.Deptor is a protein that interacts with mTOR and that belongs to the mTORC1 and mTORC2 complexes. Deptor is capable of inhibiting the kinase activity of mTOR. It is well known that the mTOR pathway is involved in various signaling pathways that are involved with various biological processes such as cell growth, apoptosis, autophagy, and the ER stress response. Therefore, Deptor, being a natural inhibitor of mTOR, has become very important in its study. Because of this, it is important to research its role regarding the development and progression of human malignancies, especially in hematologic malignancies. Due to its variation in expression in cancer, it has been suggested that Deptor can act as an oncogene or tumor suppressor depending on the cellular or tissue context. This review discusses recent advances in its transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of Deptor. As well as the advances regarding the activities of Deptor in hematological malignancies, its possible role as a biomarker, and its possible clinical relevance in these malignancies. This study aims to examine the association between neighborhood environment attributes and changes in walking for transportation among older adults. Longitudinal analysis was performed considering a population-based study (EpiFloripa Idoso), carried out in 2009-2010 with follow-up in 2013-2014. Motolimod Changes in walking, obtained with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire during both waves were associated with data from the environment perception, evaluated using individual items from the Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale (baseline only) performing multinomial logistic regression. A total of 1,162 older adults (65.2% women, mean age = 73.7 years) participated. Those who reported the presence of parks and squares (OR = 2.44, 95% confidence interval [CI; 1.70, 3.51]), sidewalks (OR = 1.66, 95% CI [1.03, 2.70]), crosswalks (OR = 1.69, 95% CI [1.05, 2.72]), illuminated streets (OR = 2.80, 95% CI [1.24, 6.33]), and safety for day walks (OR = 1.93, 95% CI [1.14, 3.24]) were more likely to remain active or become active when commuting (≥150 min/week). Older adults are more active in neighborhoods that present more favorable attributes regarding walking for transportation.
