A language is constructed of a finite/infinite set of sentences composing of words. Similar to natural languages, the Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal, the most common noninvasive tool to study the functionality of the heart and diagnose several abnormal arrhythmias, is made up of sequences of three or four distinct waves, including the P-wave, QRS complex, T-wave, and U-wave. link= Selleck Proteasome inhibitor An ECG signal may contain several different varieties of each wave (e.g., the QRS complex can have various appearances). For this reason, the ECG signal is a sequence of heartbeats similar to sentences in natural languages) and each heartbeat is composed of a set of waves (similar to words in a sentence) of different morphologies.

Analogous to natural language processing (NLP), which is used to help computers understand and interpret the human's natural language, it is possible to develop methods inspired by NLP to aid computers to gain a deeper understanding of Electrocardiogram signals. In this work, our goal is to propose a novel Emance.Membrane distillation (MD) is a promising hybrid thermal-membrane separation technology that can efficiently produce freshwater from seawater or contaminated wastewater. However, the relatively low flux and the presence of fouling or wetting agents in feed solution negate the applicability of MD for long term operation. In recent years, 'two-faced' membranes or Janus membranes have shown promising potential to decrease wetting and fouling problem of common MD system as well as enhance the flux performance. In this review, a comprehensive study was performed to investigate the various fabrication, modification, and novel design processes to prepare Janus membranes and discuss their performance in desalination and wastewater treatment utilizing MD. The promising potential, challenges and future prospects relating to the design and use of Janus membranes for MD are also tackled in this review.Environmental empowering to control resource consumption and environmental impacts is critical to engage citizens to adopt more sustainable habits. This study demonstrates the potential benefits of innovative approaches based on sustainability indicators towards a low-carbon economy. A methodology to measure and promote sustainability in schools has been proposed and evaluated, aiming at showing the environmental performance and informing of potential environmental savings. The methodology, titled ClimACT, has two main purposes measuring the environmental performance of schools through a school sustainability index based on measurable indicators in the areas of transport, procurement, green spaces, indoor air quality, energy, water and waste; and encouraging students, teachers and families towards an energy-efficient and low-carbon pathway through a structural procedure based on roles, activities and progress evaluation. link2 The approach, applied to 39 pilot schools from Portugal, Spain, France and Gibraltar, achieved promising and encouraging results. All schools deployed the methodology successfully, achieving measurable environmental benefits in 95% of cases, with an average improvement of 10% in the global performance of schools after one year. Moreover, the 5112 surveys applied to school communities, before and after the methodology implementation, highlighted how the sustainable indicators had a significant influence on the daily lives of families, leading to improvements of their behaviour, with an average increase of 20% in indicators regarding good practices in transport, energy, water, waste and citizenship. The environmental empowering through measurable indicators is a step forward a low-carbon economy. This methodology is open and adaptable to all sectors and requirements.Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is described as a low-grade chronic inflammatory state. However, there are limited studies on the specific endometrial immune status of PCOS patients. Whether this endometrial immune cell pattern is intrinsic to PCOS or the consequence of PCOS-associated obesity is a subject of debate. This study retrospectively included one hundred women diagnosed with PCOS and ninety-five normal fertile controls, which further divided into four groups (normoweight PCOS; overweight PCOS; normoweight control; overweight control) based on body mass index. The percentages of endometrial CD68+ macrophages (1.97 % vs. 1.17 %; P less then 0.001), CD163+ M2 macrophages (2.30 % vs. 1.83 %; P = 0.001), CD1a+ iDCs (0.044 % vs. 0.029 %; P = 0.002), CD83+ mDCs (1.72 % vs. 1.07 %; P less then 0.001) and CD8+ T cells (2.82 % vs. 1.95 %; P less then 0.001) were significantly higher in normoweight PCOS women than normoweight controls. The percentage of CD68+ macrophages (2.09 % vs. Selleck Proteasome inhibitor 1.15 %; P less then 0.001) was significantly higher in overweight PCOS women compared with overweight controls. In multivariant linear regression analysis, participants' PCOS status was the main predictors of endometrial CD68+ macrophages, CD163+ M2 macrophages, CD1a+ iDCs, CD83+ mDCs and CD8+ T cells in the whole study population. Additionally, in PCOS group, positive correlations were found between endometrial CD56+ NK, CD163+ M2 macrophages and QUICKI, indicating there was an association between endometrial immune cells and insulin resistance in PCOS women. Our study suggests that women with PCOS have altered endometrial immune cells, which may reflect a state of chronic low grade inflammation. The chronic inflammation, independent of obesity, may help understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms of intrinsic PCOS.Chinese steamed breads (CSB) and noodles are staple foods for many people. The production of frozen steamed products and boiled noodles has kept increasing. This is due to the increasing demand of ready-to-eat frozen food products from the market. Frozen storage significantly increases the self-life of the products and reduces the production costs. link2 On the other hand, the freezing and frozen storage lead to quality loss of the frozen products. This review summarizes effects of freezing and frozen storage on diverse quality attributes (e.g., structural and textural properties) of frozen northern-type steamed breads and boiled noodles. Food safety of the frozen products related to the COVID-19 pandemic is discussed. To counteract the quality loss of the frozen products, suitable processing methods, selection of basic ingredients and uses of various food additives can be done. Research gaps to improve the textural, cooking and nutritional quality of frozen CSB and noodles are suggested.Peripheral nerve injuries with substantial tissue loss require autologous nerve transplantation or alternatively reconstruction with nerve conduits. Axonal elongation after nerve transection is about 1 mm/day. link3 The precise time course of axonal regeneration on an ultrastructural level in nerve gap repair using either autologous or artificial implants has not been described. As peripheral nerve regeneration is a highly time critical process due to deterioration of the neuromuscular junction, this in vivo examination in a large animal model was performed in order to investigate axonal elongation rates and spider silk material degradation in a narrowly delimited time series (20, 30, 40, 50, 90, 120, 150 and 180 days) by using a novel spider silk based artificial nerve graft as a critical prerequisite for clinical translation. Autologous nerves or artificial nerve conduits based on spider silk of the spider species Trichonephila edulis were transplanted in a 6.0 cm nerve defect model in the black headed mutton. At each of the post-implant time point, electrophysiology recordings were performed to assess functional reinnervation of axonal fibers into the implants. Samples were analyzed by histology and immunofluorescence in order to verify the timeline of axonal regeneration including axonal regeneration rates of the spider silk implant and the autologous transplant groups. Spider silk was degraded within 3 month by a light immune response mainly mediated by Langhans Giant cells. In conjunction with behavioral analysis and electrophysiological measurements, the results indicate that the spider silk nerve implant supported an axonal regeneration comparable to an autologous nerve graft which is the current gold standard in nerve repair surgery. These findings indicate that a biomaterial based spider silk nerve conduit is as effective as autologous nerve implants and may be an important approach for long nerve defects.Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a kind of kidney disease with a high mortality rate, and is predominantly associated with abundant endogenous reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS). However, there are no universal clinical treatment options currently. Development of antioxidants with high kidney enrichment is highly desired to prevent AKI. As a promising new artificial enzyme, nanozymes have attracted extensive attention over the past decade because of their commendable advantages over natural and traditional artificial enzymes. link3 In this study, we reported ultrasmall polyvinylpyrrolidone-coated iridium nanoparticles (denoted as Ir NPs-PVP, 1.5 nm) as multi-enzyme mimetic to scavenge a variety of RONS, offering an efficient RONS-induced cellular protection. Meanwhile, computed tomography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry demonstrated preferential renal uptake of Ir NPs-PVP following intravenous administration, leading to alleviate clinical symptoms in mice subjected to rhabdomyolysis- or cis-platinum-induced AKI. Impressively, ultrasmall Ir NPs-PVP exhibit relatively low systemic side effects in vivo due to rapid renal clearance via urine. Our work presents the clinically translatable potential of ultrasmall nanozymes for AKI management. With a constantly growing elderly population worldwide, a focus on developing efficient prevention and therapy for Alzheimer's disease (AD) seems timely and topical. Emphasis on natural medicine is increasingly popular in the search for drug candidates that are capable of preventing and treating AD related pathology, particularly where suppression of amyloid accumulation, neurofibrillary tangle formation, neuroinflammation and oxidative stress are equally significant. A number of phytochemical compounds have been shown to collectively reduce these AD hallmarks with the progression of natural drug candidates into human clinical trials. This review focuses on current research surrounding the therapies emerging within natural medicines and their related therapeutic potential for AD treatment.
