Fiber-reinforced composites are used as restorative materials for prosthetic oral rehabilitation. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is an accustomed affection with various oral manifestations. This study aimed to evaluate the behavior of two high-performance CAD/CAM milled reinforced composites (Trinia™, TriLor) in artificial saliva at different pH levels through immersion tests, and to determine if changes in mass or surface morphology at variable pH, specific for patients affected by GERD, appear. After investigating the elemental composition and surface morphology, the specimens were immersed in Carter Brugirard artificial saliva for 21 days at different pH values (5.7, 7.6, and varying the pH from 5.7 to 3). The values of the weighed masses during the immersion tests were statistically processed in terms of mean and standard deviation. Results suggested that irrespective of the medium pH, the two composites presented a similar mass variation in the range of -0.18 (±0.01)-1.82 (±0.02) mg after immersion, suggesting their stability when in contact with artificial saliva, an aspect which was also highlighted by scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis performed on the immersed surfaces. Novel composite biomaterials can be a proper alternative for metal alloys used for prosthetic frameworks in patients suffering from GERD.In this work, we used a combination of corrosion, electrochemical, and physical methods to determine the properties of nanoscale films obtained by treatment with octadecylamine (ODA), benzotriazole (BTA) vapors, and their mixtures at elevated temperatures. The mixture of ODA + BTA surpasses its components in protective aftereffect, but an analysis of their mutual effects shows that there is antagonism between them. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data indicate that the protection of steel by a mixture of ODA + BTA and its components is characterized by a mixed blocking activation mechanism. The processing of steel in hot vapors of the ODA + BTA mixture leads to hydrophobization of the surface and super-hydrophobization if a polymodal surface is created on the steel before processing in vapors.Dielectric capacitors have been widely studied because their electrostatic storage capacity is enormous, and they can deliver the stored energy in a very short time. Relaxor ferroelectrics-based dielectric capacitors have gained tremendous importance for the efficient storage of electrical energy. Relaxor ferroelectrics possess low dielectric loss, low remanent polarization, high saturation polarization, and high breakdown strength, which are the main parameters for energy storage. This article focuses on a timely review of the energy storage performance of BiFeO3-based relaxor ferroelectrics in bulk ceramics, multilayers, and thin film forms. The article begins with a general introduction to various energy storage systems and the need for dielectric capacitors as energy storage devices. This is followed by a brief discussion on the mechanism of energy storage in capacitors, ferroelectrics, anti-ferroelectrics, and relaxor ferroelectrics as potential candidates for energy storage. NSC16168 The remainder of this article is devoted to reviewing the energy storage performance of bulk ceramics, multilayers, and thin films of BiFeO3-based relaxor ferroelectrics, along with a discussion of strategies to address some of the issues associated with their application as energy storage systems.Twelve full-scale reinforced concrete beams with two tension lap splices were constructed and tested under a four-point loading test. Half of these beams had shorter lap splices than that recommended by American Concrete Institute Building Code ACI 318-19; they failed by bond loss between steel and concrete at the lap splice region before rebar yielding. The other half of the beams were designed with a lap splice length slightly exceeding that recommended by ACI 318-19; they failed by rebar yielding and exhibited a ductile behavior. Several strain gauges were attached to the longitudinal bars in the lap splice region to study the local behavior of deformed bars during loading. The strain in a rebar was maximum at the loaded end of the lap splice and progressively decreased toward the unloaded end because the rebar at this end could not sustain any load. Stress flow discontinuity occurred at the loaded end and caused stress concentration. The effect of this concentration was investigated based on test results. The comparison of bond strengths calculated by existing equations and those of tested specimens indicated that the results agreed well.Massive amounts of industrial and agricultural water around the world are polluted by various types of contaminants that harm the environment and affect human health. Alginic acid is a very versatile green polymer used for heavy metal adsorption due to its availability, biocompatibility, low cost, and non-toxic characteristics. The aim of this paper was to prepare new low-cost hybrid composite beads using sodium alginate with treated montmorillonite and kaolin for the adsorption of copper (Cu) cations. Modified and unmodified clays were investigated by studying their morphology and elemental composition, functional groups, and mean particle size and particle size distribution. The characterization of alginate/clay hybrid composite beads was carried out by evaluating surface morphology (by scanning electron microscopy, SEM), crystallinity (by X-ray diffraction, XRD), and point of zero charge (pHpzc)(Zeta Potential Analyzer). Batch adsorption experiments of alginate/clay hybrid composite beads investigated the effect of metal concentration in the range of 1-4 mg L-1 on Cu(II) removal, adsorption kinetic for maximum 240 min, and Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms by using atomic absorption spectrometry. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model best fitted the adsorption for alginate/montmorillonite beads (R2 = 0.994), while the diffusion process was predominant for montmorillonite/kaolin beads (R2 = 0.985). The alginate/clay hybrid materials best fitted the Langmuir isotherm model.Stiff total hip arthroplasty implants can lead to strain shielding, bone loss and complex revision surgery. The aim of this study was to develop topology optimisation techniques for more compliant hip implant design. The Solid Isotropic Material with Penalisation (SIMP) method was adapted, and two hip stems were designed and additive manufactured (1) a stem based on a stochastic porous structure, and (2) a selectively hollowed approach. Finite element analyses and experimental measurements were conducted to measure stem stiffness and predict the reduction in stress shielding. The selectively hollowed implant increased peri-implanted femur surface strains by up to 25 percentage points compared to a solid implant without compromising predicted strength. Despite the stark differences in design, the experimentally measured stiffness results were near identical for the two optimised stems, with 39% and 40% reductions in the equivalent stiffness for the porous and selectively hollowed implants, respectively, compared to the solid implant. The selectively hollowed implant's internal structure had a striking resemblance to the trabecular bone structures found in the femur, hinting at intrinsic congruency between nature's design process and topology optimisation. The developed topology optimisation process enables compliant hip implant design for more natural load transfer, reduced strain shielding and improved implant survivorship. The use of titanium dioxide in concrete block pavements is a promising approach to reduce air pollution in the roadside. When TiO2 is used as an additive of cement concrete or mortar, it is not dispersed uniformly due to agglomeration between particles causing the degradation of photocatalytic reaction. To improve the photocatalytic performance of TiO2, the Nano SiO2-TiO2 (NST) has been developed by coating TiO2 with SiO2 as a support using the sol-gel method. The environmental performance of concrete blocks incorporating NST as an additive was evaluated using both laboratory and full-scale chamber experiments. It was observed from laboratory environment chamber testing that the NO reduction efficiency of concrete blocks with 4% NST ranged from 16.5 to 59.1%, depending on the UV intensity. Results of the full-scale chamber test on NST concrete blocks indicated that the NO and SO2 reduction efficiencies were 22.3% and 14.4% at a 564 W/m2 of solar radiation, respectively. It was found that the increase in UV intensity and solar radiation had a positive effect on decreasing NO and SO2 concentration. In the future, the NST will be applied at in-service photocatalytic block pavements to validate the environmental performance in field conditions.Dental surgery implantation has become increasingly important among procedures that aim to rehabilitate edentulous patients to restore esthetics and the mastication ability. The optimal stability of dental implants is correlated primarily to the quality and quantity of bone. This systematic literature review describes clinical research focusing on the correlation between cortical bone thickness and primary/secondary stability of dental fixtures. To predict successful outcome of prosthetic treatment, quantification of bone density at the osteotomy site is, in general, taken into account, with little attention being paid to assessment of the thickness of cortical bone. Nevertheless, local variations in bone structure (including cortical thickness) could explain differences in clinical practice with regard to implantation success, marginal bone resorption or anchorage loss. Current knowledge is preliminarily detailed, while tentatively identifying which inconclusive or unexplored aspects merit further investigation. In a car body, there exist thousands of resistance spot welds, which may induce large deformation during the manufacturing process. Therefore, it is expected that automotive industries will develop a method and a computing system for the fast and simple prediction of its deformation. Although the inherent strain method has been used for the fast prediction of arc welding deformation, it has not been applied to resistance spot welding so far. Additionally, the electrical-thermal-mechanical coupling analysis for the deformation induced by resistance spot welding is complicated and much more time-consuming. Therefore, in this study, a nugget model of the resistance spot weld has been developed, and the inherent strain method is extended for use in the fast prediction of resistance spot welding deformation. In addition, the deformation of a vehicle part with 23 resistance spot welds was efficiently predicted within around 90 min using the inherent strain method, displaying good accuracy compared with the measurement. Many methods have been used in the past two decades to detect crack damage in steel joints of the offshore structures, but the electromechanical impedance (EMI) method is a comparatively recent non-destructive method that can be used for quality monitoring of the weld in structural steel joints. The EMI method ensures the direct assessment, analysis and particularly the recognition of structural dynamics by acquiring its EM admittance signatures. This research paper first briefly introduces the theoretical background of the EMI method, followed by carrying out the experimental work in which damage in the form of a crack is simulated by using an impedance analyser at different distances. The EMI technique is used to identify the existence of damage in the welded steel joints of offshore steel jacket structures, and Q345B steel was chosen as the material for test in the present study. Sub-millimetre cracks were found in four typical welded steel joints on the jacket platform under circulating loads, and root average variance was used to assess the extent of the crack damage.
