Institutions now legally required to inform agency if grantees are "disciplined" for workplace misbehavior.Predictions of how marine calcifying organisms will respond to climate change rely heavily on the fossil record of nannoplankton. Declines in calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and nannofossil abundance through several past global warming events have been interpreted as biocalcification crises caused by ocean acidification and related factors. We present a global record of imprint-or "ghost"-nannofossils that contradicts this view, revealing exquisitely preserved nannoplankton throughout an inferred Jurassic biocalcification crisis. Imprints from two further Cretaceous warming events confirm that the fossil records of these intervals have been strongly distorted by CaCO3 dissolution. Although the rapidity of present-day climate change exceeds the temporal resolution of most fossil records, complicating direct comparison with past warming events, our findings demonstrate that nannoplankton were more resilient to past events than traditional fossil evidence suggests.Highlights from the Science family of journals.A U.S. government contest has 10 companies competing to make better face coverings.Problematic internet use parallels drug addiction, but the mechanisms are not yet clear.Optical fiber-based sensing technology can drastically improve Earth observations by enabling the use of existing submarine communication cables as seafloor sensors. Previous interferometric and polarization-based techniques demonstrated environmental sensing over cable lengths up to 10,500 kilometers. However, measurements were limited to the integrated changes over the entire length of the cable. We demonstrate the detection of earthquakes and ocean signals on individual spans between repeaters of a 5860-kilometer-long transatlantic cable rather than the whole cable. By applying this technique to the existing undersea communication cables, which have a repeater-to-repeater span length of 45 to 90 kilometers, the largely unmonitored ocean floor could be instrumented with thousands of permanent real-time environmental sensors without changes to the underwater infrastructure.Climate change could lead to a net expansion of global forests. But will a more forested world actually be cooler?Breakdown of "biocrusts" allows wind to attack dryland soils.Scene resembles earlier image from a distant galaxy, as Einstein's theory predicts.N-Sulfenylimines (sulfenimines, thiooximes, N-alkylidenesulfenamides) were efficiently synthesized through the reaction of primary amines and disulfides with NBS or bromine. This reaction can be carried out in an open flask at room temperature without the need for any transition-metal-containing additives. The use of thiols instead of disulfides gave similar results. A wide range of amines were reacted with aryl and alkyldisulfides, resulting in the formation of sulfenimines in a yield of 44-99%.Accumulated findings from studies in which implicit-bias measures correlate with discriminatory judgment and behavior have led many social scientists to conclude that implicit biases play a causal role in racial and other discrimination. In turn, that belief has promoted and sustained two lines of work to develop remedies (a) individual treatment interventions expected to weaken or eradicate implicit biases and (b) group-administered training programs to overcome biases generally, including implicit biases. Our review of research on these two types of sought remedies finds that they lack established methods that durably diminish implicit biases and have not reproducibly reduced discriminatory consequences of implicit (or other) biases. That disappointing conclusion prompted our turn to strategies based on methods that have been successful in the domain of public health. Preventive measures are designed to disable the path from implicit biases to discriminatory outcomes. Disparity-finding methods aim to discover disparities that sometimes have obvious fixes, or that at least suggest where responsibility should reside for developing a fix. Disparity-finding methods have the advantage of being useful in remediation not only for implicit biases but also systemic biases. For both of these categories of bias, causes of discriminatory outcomes are understood as residing in large part outside the conscious awareness of individual actors. We conclude with recommendations to guide organizations that wish to deal with biases for which they have not yet found solutions.
Indigenous Peoples and scholars call for strengths-based approaches to research inclusive of Indigenous resiliency and positive outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine positive mental health for Indigenous adults with type 2 diabetes and to determine if positive mental health is linked to community connectedness (a coping resource) and active coping (a coping response).

Participants (N  = 194 at baseline) were randomly selected from clinical records, at least 18 years old with a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, and self-identified as American Indian.

Latent growth curve models revealed that average positive mental health was predicted to decrease over the four waves of the study, although not for participants with above-average active coping at baseline. Community connectedness at baseline was associated with higher initial levels of positive mental health. Within-person change in active coping and community connectedness were both associated with increases in positive mental health.

This study aligns with previous research demonstrating that coping can influence health outcomes, and furthers the stress process literature by showing that active coping and community connectedness can impact positive mental health for Indigenous adults with Type 2 Diabetes.

OPLL is most commonly observed in East Asian populations, with prevalence rates of 1.9% to 4.3% reported in Japan. OPLL rates are lower in North American and European patients, with reported prevalence of 0.1% to 1.7%. Patients typically develop symptoms due to OPLL in their cervical spines. The etiology of OPLL is multifactorial, including genetic, metabolic, and anatomic factors. KU60019 Asymptomatic or symptomatic patients with OPLL can be managed nonsurgically, whereas patients with neurologic symptoms may require surgical decompression from an anterior, posterior, or combined approach. Surgical treatment can provide notable improvement in neurologic function. Surgical decision making accounts for multiple factors, including patient comorbidities, neurologic status, disease morphology, radiographic findings, and procedure complication profiles. In this study, we review OPLL epidemiology and pathophysiology, clinical features, radiographic evaluation, management, and complications. We present a simple model which can account for the stereoscopic sensitivity of praying mantis predatory strikes. The model consists of a single "disparity sensor" a binocular neuron sensitive to stereoscopic disparity and thus to distance from the animal. The model is based closely on the known behavioural and neurophysiological properties of mantis stereopsis. The monocular inputs to the neuron reflect temporal change and are insensitive to contrast sign, making the sensor insensitive to interocular correlation. The monocular receptive fields have a excitatory centre and inhibitory surround, making them tuned to size. The disparity sensor combines inputs from the two eyes linearly, applies a threshold and then an exponent output nonlinearity. The activity of the sensor represents the model mantis's instantaneous probability of striking. We integrate this over the stimulus duration to obtain the expected number of strikes in response to moving targets with different stereoscopic disparity, size and vertical pite not being fitted to these data. This is the first image-computable model of insect stereopsis, and reproduces key features of both neurophysiology and striking behaviour.
Despite reliable evidence-based research supporting the COVID-19 vaccines, population-wide confidence and trust remain limited. We sought to expand prior knowledge about COVID-19 vaccine perceptions, while determining which population groups are at greatest risk for not getting a vaccine.

Study participants in the U.S. (79% female, median age group 46-60 years) were recruited through an online Qualtrics survey distributed as a Facebook advertisement from 3/19/21-4/30/21. We assumed that every participant is at risk of COVID-19 infection and should be able to get the vaccine with proper access. Bivariate and multivariable models were performed. Collinearity between variables was assessed.

A total of 2,626 responses were generated and 2,259 were included in data analysis. According to our multivariate model analysis, vaccines were perceived as safe by those who had or planned to obtain full vaccination (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) (95% confidence interval) = 40.0 (19.0, 84.2); p< 0.0001) and those who inf p<0.05 was used for all tests.

Level of education and partisanship, but not race/ethnicity, were the most likely factors associated with vaccine hesitancy or likelihood to vaccinate. Also, low vaccination rates among underrepresented minorities may be due to distrust for healthcare industries. Population sub-groups less likely to be vaccinated and/or receptive to vaccines should be targeted for vaccine education and incentives.

Recent studies showed the potential of MRI-based deep learning (DL) for assessing treatment response in rectal cancer, but the role of MRI-based DL in evaluating Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homologue (KRAS) mutation remains unclear.

To develop a DL method based on T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) and clinical factors for noninvasively evaluating KRAS mutation in rectal cancer.

Retrospective.

A total of 376 patients (108 women [28.7%]) with histopathology-confirmed rectal adenocarcinoma and KRAS mutation status.

A 3 T, turbo spin echo T2WI and single-shot echo-planar diffusion-weighted imaging (b=0, 1000 sec/mm
).

A clinical model was constructed with clinical factors (age, gender, carcinoembryonic antigen level, and carbohydrate antigen 199 level) and MRI features (tumor length, tumor location, tumor stage, lymph node stage, and extramural vascular invasion), and two DL models based on modified MobileNetV2 architecture were evaluated for diagnosing KRAS mutation based on T2WI alone (image model) or both T2WI and clinical factors (combined model).
