Obesity and mood disorders are two of the most serious health issues of modern times. These health conditions are often linked, with obesity acting both as a cause and consequence of anxiety and depression. Although sex differences in the relationship between obesity and mood disorders are observed in clinical populations, the relative influence of biology versus societal conditioning is unclear. In part, this is because sex effects are rarely examined in the animal models used to derive our understanding of basic biological mechanisms. Due to the perceived confounding nature of hormonal fluctuations in females, rodent studies examining nutritional effects on behavioral responses are typically restricted to males. Yet, hormones play an important role in mediating effects of diet on behavior. In this mini-review, we outline interactions between obesity, hormones and the brain to illustrate the importance of considering sex-specific effects in studies of nutritional effects on behavior. We highlight the need for a more nuanced understanding of how dietary factors influence these relationships, arguing that such knowledge will help improve clinical health outcomes in the management of both obesity and mood disorders.
The obesity epidemic continues to be a major public health concern. Although exercise is the most common weight loss recommendation, weight loss outcomes from an exercise program are often suboptimal. The human body compensates for a large percentage of the energy expended through exercise to maintain energy homeostasis and body weight. Increases in energy intake appear to be the most impactful compensatory behavior. Research on the mechanisms driving this behavior has not been fully elucidated.

To determine if exercise influences the attentional processing towards food cues (attentional bias) and inhibitory control for food cues among individuals classified as overweight to obese who do not exercise.

Thirty adults classified as overweight to obese participated in a counterbalanced, crossover trial featuring two assessment visits on separate days separated by at least one week. Attentional bias and inhibitory control towards food cues was assessed prior to and after a bout of exercise where participantse intervention.
An acute bout of exercise increased attentional bias for food cues, pointing to a mechanism that may contribute to the weight loss resistance observed with exercise. Future trials are needed to evaluate attentional bias towards food cues over a longitudinal exercise intervention.
The natural history and management of intramural hematoma (IMH) has varied significantly worldwide. From the present retrospective analysis of our institutional database, we have reported the long-term results from medical and surgical management of types A and B IMH.

Computed tomography reports completed at our tertiary care hospital from July 2007 to July 2020 were used to identify patients with IMH with a thickness of ≥7mm. Those with IMH directly related to trauma, previous aortic surgery, penetrating atheromatous ulcer, dissection flap, or an iatrogenic source and those who had never received any treatment of IMH at presentation were excluded.

A total of 54 patients with IMH had met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Of the 54 patients, 24 had presented with Stanford type A. Of these 24 patients, 10 had initially undergone surgery and 14 had initially received medical treatment. Two patients in the medical group had subsequently undergone surgery. In addition, 30 patients had presented with typeclosely clinically and radiographically for signs of deterioration in the short- and long-term phases of their care. They can achieve long-term survival similar to that of surgically treated type A IMH and medically treated type B IMH patients using this algorithm. However, they might require late surgical intervention, especially for aneurysmal disease.

Popliteal artery aneurysm (PAA) is a rare disease with a prevalence of 0.1% to 1%. Within previous years, endovascular repair (ER) of PAAs has been performed more frequently despite the lack of high-level evidence compared with open surgical repair (OSR). In 2014, the POPART registry was initiated to validate the current treatment options for PAA repair.

POPART is a multinational multicenter registry of the peri- and postoperative outcomes of ER and OSR for PAAs. Data sets were recorded using the online survey tool SurveyMonkey (available at https//www.surveymonkey.com/). Regular monitoring and plausibility checks of the data sets are performed to ensure reliability. The aim of the present study was to report the findings from the POPART registry, which includes data from 41 centers.

From June 2014 to August 2019, 794 cases had been recorded in the POPART registry. OSR had been performed in 662 patients and ER in 106 patients; 23 patients had been treated conservatively. Of the 106 patients in the primagood perioperative results for endovascular treatment of PAA in asymptomatic patients with good outflow vessels. The perioperative complication rate is low and the postoperative hospital stay is shorter than after OSR. However, the patency rates after 12 and 24 months are low in the ER group compared to patients treated with open repair. More follow-up data is required for further interpretation; the completion of the data sets in the registry is ongoing.
We evaluated the associations of two biomarkers of hyperglycemia-hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) and glycated albumin-with lower extremity disease in US adultsoverall and by diabetes status.

We conducted a cross-sectional study of adult participants aged≥40years who attended the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2004 (unweighted N=5,785). We used logistic regression to evaluate the associations of HbA1c and glycated albumin with lower extremity disease peripheral neuropathy (assessed by monofilament test), peripheral artery disease (assessed by ankle-brachial index), history of foot ulcer, or amputation. All analyses were weighted and accounted for the complex NHANES sample survey design.

The prevalence of lower extremity disease was 17.4% (15.9% in adults without diabetes and 33.2% in adults with diabetes). HbA1c and glycated albumin were not significantly associated with lower extremity disease in adults without diabetes. However, we observed significant associations of both HbA1c (OR 1.19 per 1-% point increase, 95%CI 1.06-1.34) and glycated albumin (OR 1.06 per 1-% point increase, 95%CI 1.02-1.10) with lower extremity disease in adults with diabetes after adjustment. The patterns of association were similar for HbA1c and glycated albumin (P-for-seemingly-unrelated-regression=0.60), with strong linear associations observed at high (diabetic) levels of both biomarkers.

There is no longitudinal study regarding the changes of insulin resistance (IR) status and the development of complications in type 1 diabetes (T1D). By analyzing data sets from DCCT/EDIC study, we investigated the associations of IR status changes and diabetic complications in T1D.

Estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR) was calculated at entry of DCCT and in EDIC year 12 (average 18.5years later) to represent IR. The participants (n=957) were divided into four groups based on IR changes from baseline RR group (stayed resistant; n=49), RS group (became sensitive; n=42), SR group (became resistant; n=197), and SS group (stayed sensitive; n=669). The association of diabetic complications were analyzed by using multivariable logistic regression models.

The improved IR decreased the risk of peripheral neuropathy, whereas the deteriorated IR increased the risk of diabetic complications including hypertension, peripheral artery disease, coronary artery calcification, retinopathy, albuminuria, peripheral neuropathy, and cardiac autonomic neuropathy (P<0.05). Moreover, RR group (HR=3.59, 95% CI (2.05-6.32)), RS group (HR=2.27, 95% CI (1.11-4.64)) and SR group (HR=1.90, 95% CI (1.24-2.92)) had higher risk of cardiovascular events compared to SS group (P<0.05).

The basolateral amygdala (BLA) plays a critical role in these diseases and is extremely sensitive to stress. Here, we explored in male and female mice the long-term (35 days) impact of a 24-h restraint stress on BLA circuitry. We used Thy1-YFP mice to discriminate 2 subpopulations of excitatory neurons, which participate in "Fear-On" (Thy1-) and "Fear-Off" (Thy1+) circuits. The stress decreased the density of parvalbumin (PV) + inhibitory neurons in both sexes but did not alter their dendritic complexity. We also analyzed the perisomatic input of basket interneurons on Thy1+ and Thy1- neurons, finding sex dependent effects. In males, we did not find alterations in the density of PV+ puncta or in that of cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1R) + puncta from cholecystokinin+ basket cells. By contrast, in females we found increased the density of PV+ puncta on Thy1+ neurons and reduced on the Thy1- neurons. This adverse experience also reduced in the long term the density of CB1R+ puncta both on Thy1+ and Thy1- cells in females. The expression of the activity marker FosB was not altered in PV+ interneurons and in Thy1+ neurons of stressed animals.
