Melding form with function, French-door refrigerators offer stylish double doors that open up to an expansive fridge on the top and a freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out because of their distinctive features, including through-the-door dispensers and higher-end Ice makers.

We contacted Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect and the founder of LS Projects - for her advice on how to choose the right one. They evaluated the capacity of storage and layout and energy efficiency as well as other factors.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name of the series suggests that GE’s Profile series is targeted at people who want to integrate cutting-edge features in their kitchens. This refrigerator is packed with them, from an in-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a sophisticated water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Since this refrigerator costs more, I'd expect better.

Inside the fridge, you'll find 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment has 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is roughly on par for an French door fridge that costs this much. It comes with a decent size icemaker in the left door. But it's not the most spacious one I've seen.

You can adjust the shelves in both compartments for the perfect storage solution. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is attractive, too. The LED lighting adds a nice feature. The bins for storage inside include a third shelf that can be folded down to store tall objects. The drawers come with temperature controls, so you can set them to Meat, Beverage, or Deli settings. The drawers are simple to open and close, but I found the textured plastic coatings to be a bit rough on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator comes with the all the features you'd expect from a fridge in this price range, including Wi-Fi and app support via GE's SmartHQ software. The app, which is available for iOS and Android devices, lets you control your refrigerator from anywhere in the world, and has a ton of customization options. It also sends you notifications when a door is left open, when your fridge or freezer needs defrosting and when it's time to change the filter.

It would be nice if the GE PYE22PYNFS had Precise Fill it's an option in a handful of other GE refrigerators that allows you to choose how many cups of water you'd like to pour out at once. It does have an indicator on the display of the fridge to display how much water have left, but it's not as helpful as Precise fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

It is designed to look like a seamless piece of your kitchen Bosch's French-door refrigerator looks seamless and is a standout. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment that helps keep vegetables and fruits fresher for longer, and two compressors for maximum preservation of food. The Ice maker is among the most efficient we've ever tested and produces pyramid-shaped ice that is low in water consumption. This refrigerator is ideal for a single family or kitchenette that needs an elegant design and top of the best food preservation.

This refrigerator was rated as the best in our Refrigerators Test for a variety of reasons. The freezer temperature remained steady at just above 0° Fahrenheit and never fluctuated more than a fraction - this is crucial to avoid freezer burn. The refrigerator section of the refrigerator also performed well. It reached the initial temperature set within an hour and remained at the temperature throughout our testing.

Bosch has a reputation for premium appliances and appliances, so it's not a surprise that this counter depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance that has the option of connecting to your home Wi-Fi as well as Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app allows you to monitor and control your refrigerator remotely on your tablet or smartphone. The fridge is expensive however, it offers excellent features and functionality at a reasonable price.

While the fridge is an amazing piece of equipment but it's important to be aware of the limitations. It has a small space for shelves, so you'll require some creativity when it comes to storing large items. The shelves aren't resistant to spills and are easily damaged or stained by sharp items. The trays are easily removed from the refrigerator. However, they must be cleaned regularly to prevent the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth refrigerator is a great option for those who need lots of space within a small frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge has an ordinary French door layout, with two rows of shelves that can be used to capture spills and a set of crisper drawers. The top shelf on the right side can be folded down to make space for taller items. There's also a full-width drawer for deli items and an internal water dispenser.


This refrigerator has a freezer with an ice maker making it simple to transfer frozen ice as needed. The freezer features thoughtful design elements, for instance, sliding drawers to help you to organize the place of your items. It also comes with a large bin that can accommodate plenty of frozen food and an additional container for storing ice.

Smart InstaView panel is another awesome feature of the refrigerator. It allows you to control the temperature of your fridge as well as lighting from your smartphone. It's a nice way to control and monitor your refrigerator, particularly if you're away from home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat, but it doesn't necessarily enhance the efficiency of the fridge. In fact it took longer to defrost and chill foods in this refrigerator than some of the others we tested. This could be due to the greater capacity.

Another issue with the door of this refrigerator. The handles that are sunken let shorter people open them from the bottom. However taller people struggle to close them without slamming. It would have been better if these had front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a ideal choice for those who want to combine the benefits of a French-door refrigerator's aesthetics with an efficient layout. It has a capacity that is higher than average for counter-depth models and also cools evenly. It's also a little less than the best counter depth refrigerators that have an icemaker, which makes it an attractive option.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

If you're looking for a French door fridge that doesn't cost you a fortune, this Frigidaire is a great choice. It's a minimalist design that's not as striking in appearance as other models however it comes with enough features that make it a great pick. Its main feature is the temperature adjustable drawer which helps keep food items like meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge water and ice maker dispenser.

The "Chill Drawer", which is located above the two crisper bins, is another nice feature. This drawer lets you redirect some of the fridge's cooling power directly to this area, meaning you can store foods that require extra attention. This feature can be adjusted using a slider on the outside of the drawer. It is also possible to use this to adjust the general cooling settings for the whole fridge, but I've noticed that adjusting the generic settings tends to produce better results than specific ones.

In my tests, the temperature of the refrigerator stayed fairly consistent across different areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the refrigerator didn't vary much from 38 degrees. This is a great performance however it doesn't make it into the top ten in our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be connected with a smart thermostat to gain more precise information on the internal temperature of your fridge.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made from gray-bodied stainless with a "smudge proof" finish. It is capable of removing streaks and fingerprints even when compared to the shiny stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tried.
