How the manipulation of training volume and frequency affects responsiveness level for muscle mass gain in older women has not been investigated. Aims This study had the objective of identifying responders (RP) and non-responders (N-RP) older women for skeletal muscle mass (SMM) gain from a 12-week resistance training (RT) program. Additionally, we analyzed whether the N-RP could gain SMM with an increase in weekly training volume over 12 additional weeks of training. Methods Thirty-nine older women (aged ≥ 60 years) completed 24 weeks of a whole-body RT intervention (eight exercises, 2-3×/week, 1-2 sets of 10-15 repetitions). SMM was estimated by DXA, and the responsive cut-off value was set at two times the standard error of measurement. Participants were considered as RP if they exceeded the cut-off value after a 12-week RT phase, while the N-RP were those who failed to reach the SMM cut-off. Results Of the 22 participants considered to be N-RP, only 3 accumulated SMM gains (P = 0.250) that exceeded the cut-off point for responsiveness following 12 additional weeks of training, while 19 maintained or presented negative SMM changes. Of the 17 participants considered to be RP, all continued to gain SMM after the second 12-week RT phase. No significant correlation was observed between the changes in SMM and any baseline aspect of the participants. Conclusions Our results suggest that some older women are RP, while others are N-RP to SMM gains resulting from RT. Furthermore, the non-responsiveness condition was not altered by an increase of training volume and intervention duration while RP participants continue to increase SMM; it appears that RP continue to be RP, and N-RP continue to be N-RP.Introduction Most adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) have several chronic conditions treated with complex regimens and multiple medications. The burden and complexity of multiple medication use are associated with worse patient outcomes, including reduced adherence and increased costs, hospitalizations, mortality rates, and HbA1c. This study quantifies the chronic medication burden, regimen complexity, and potential medication interactions in patients with T2D using a nationwide claims database in the USA. Methods Adults with T2D treated for greater than half of the year with at least one glucose-lowering agent (GLA) in 2017 were included in this descriptive study. Chronic medications were defined as all GLAs and non-GLA medications prescribed for at least 90 days in 2017 to at least 2% of the cohort. Medication burden, defined as the number of medications prescribed, was examined. Medication complexity, proxied by the Medication Regimen Complexity Index (MRCI), and potential use of interacting medications were also examined. Results were investigated for all chronic medications and were reported on the basis of the disease treated (diabetes or other condition) and the route of administration (oral or other). Results On average, in 2017, the 814,156 patients included in the study filled prescriptions for 4.1 chronic medications (standard deviation [SD] = 2.0), 3.7 oral chronic medications (SD = 1.9), 1.5 GLAs (SD = 0.8), and 1.1 oral GLAs (SD = 0.7). The average MRCI was 14.7 for all chronic medications (SD = 7.4), with a mean of 12.4 for all oral chronic medications (SD = 6.3), 6.6 for all GLAs (SD = 3.8), and 4.9 for oral GLAs (SD = 2.6). Conclusion On average, patients with T2D used multiple medications, had a complex medication regimen, and were at potential risk of medication interactions. These findings suggest that patients, practitioners, pharmacists, and payers may benefit from interventions which decrease medication burden, complexity, and/or adverse events related to the treatment of T2D.Urbanized rivers flowing through polluted megacities receive substantial amount of carbon from domestic sewage and industrial effluents which can significantly alter the air-water CO2 flux rates. In this regard, we quantified the partial pressure of CO2 in the surface water (pCO2(water)), air-water CO2 fluxes, and associated biogeochemical parameters in the Hooghly River, India, flowing through two of the most polluted cities of the country, Kolkata and Howrah, over a complete annual cycle during spring tidal phase (SP) and neap tidal phase (NP). This urbanized part of Hooghly River was always supersaturated with CO2 having an annual mean pCO2(water) and air-water CO2 flux of ~ 3800 μatm and ~ 49 mol C m-2 year-1, respectively. Significant seasonal variability was observed for both pCO2(water) and air-water CO2 flux (pre-monsoon, 3038 ± 539 μatm and 5049 ± 964 μmol m-2 h-1; monsoon, 4609 ± 711 μatm and 7918 ± 1400 μmol m-2 h-1; post-monsoon, 2558 ± 258 μatm and 4048 ± 759 μmol m-2 h-1, respectively). Monthly mean pH and total alkalinity varied from 7.482 to 8.099 and from 2437 to 4136 μmol kg-1, respectively, over the annual cycle. pCO2(water) showed significant positive correlation with turbidity and negative correlation with electrical conductivity and gross primary productivity (GPP). High water discharge could have facilitated high turbidity, especially during the monsoon season, which led to depletion in GPP and enhancement in pCO2(water) which in turn led to very high CO2 effluxes. The CO2 efflux rate in this urbanized riverine stretch was substantially higher than that observed in previous studies carried out in the less urbanized estuarine stretch of Hooghly. This indicates that the presence of highly urbanized and polluted metropolis potentially enhanced the pCO2(water) and CO2 effluxes of this river. Similar observations were made recently in some Asian and Australian urban rivers.Industries continuously emit xenobiotics into the environment, which increases risks of exposing humans and other biota to xenobiotics. Though various conventional and modern environmental remediation technologies are being employed, some of them are ineffective in removing xenobiotics, while others are costly and not feasible for large-scale utilization. Maize stover (MS) and rice husks (RH) are produced in abundance globally, which make them ideal and cost-effective feedstocks for large-scale biochar production for environmental remediation. Since either type of pristine MS and RH biochar may not be effective in removing some xenobiotics, the incorporation of modifiers into MS/RH biochars can help to form composite MS/RH biochar which in turn can better decontaminate water and soil. Thus, this review paper provides a comprehensive overview of the preparation, characterization, and environmental remediation using pristine and composite MS/RH biochar. Possible areas for composite MS/RH biochar applications and future perspectives of the technology in reducing xenobiotics are also proposed in this paper.This study examines the association between transportation services (i.e., passenger and freight) and carbon emissions concerning the US economy. The monthly data for this study were collected for the period from 2000 M1 to 2019 M8. In this study, QARDL econometric approach as discussed by Cho et al. (2015) has been used to tests the relationship between transportation services and CO2 emissions. Due to the chaotic and nonlinear behavior of our concerning variables, it was quite difficult to gauge the principle properties of their variations. Therefore, we relied on QARDL, which has been missing in previous researches. By utilizing the QARDL method, this research assesses the long-term stability of the nexus across the quantiles to provide an econometric framework that is more flexible than the traditional ones. In particular, the authors have analyzed how the quantiles of transportation (i.e., passenger and freight) influence the quantiles of CO2 emissions (environmental degradation). The empirical evidence revealed the negative significant relationship of both the transportation system (i.e., passenger and freight) with carbon emissions; however, this relationship holds at low quantiles of freight transport, whereas the same relationship has been observed at the majority of quantiles of passenger transport. So, this depicts that the transportation system of the USA helps to reduce CO2 emissions. Therefore, to maintain this situation, the government shall introduce more technologies that are fuel-efficient and promote clean consumption, thus reducing CO2 emissions, boosting economic growth, and making green transportation services.In the present work, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) enzyme was purified from potato peel using three-phase partitioning (TPP). In this method, ammonium sulfate and t-butanol were added to precipitate the protein/enzyme from the crude aqueous extract. The PPO enzyme precipitated as an interfacial layer between the upper organic solvent phase and lower aqueous phase. Different purification parameters such as crude extract to t-butanol ratio, ammonium sulfate concentration, temperature, and pH were optimized for TPP. About 69% PPO enzyme activity was recovered in a single step of TPP with 9.2-fold purification. The sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis profile of partially purified PPO enzyme showed molecular weight in the range of about 30-40 kDa. The PPO enzyme was then investigated for the fabrication of a portable, cost-effective, and disposable colorimetric paper biosensor or colorimetric "test strips" for detection of phenolic contaminants. PPO and a chromophore reagent (3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazine) generated a range of color in the presence of phenolic compounds (catechol, phenol, p-cresol, 4-methyl catechol) within 15 min, and limit of detection was found to be 0.
