The potential nephrotoxicity of polyfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFCs) have received extensive attention. However, the relationship between PFCs and the risk of kidney stones remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the level of PFCs in the US population and its relationship with the risk of kidney stones. We investigated the serum levels of six PFCs in 8453 adult participants (≥20 years) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2007 and 2016, including perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDE), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHS), 2-(N-methyl-perfluorooctane sulfonamido) acetate (MPAH), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUA), and perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDO). Logistic regression model was used to evaluate the correlation between PFCs and kidney stones. Of the 8453 participants, 787 self-reported a history of kidney stones. After adjusting for gender, age, race, education, marital status, body mass index (BMI), hypertension, diabetes and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), we found that total PFCs and PFHS were positively correlated with the risk of kidney stones. Compared with the lowest tertile, the odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CI) with increasing tertiles were 1.30 (95% CI,1.08-1.59, p = 0.007) and 1.25 (95 CI%,1.00-1.52, p = 0.024) for total PFCs and 1.24 (95 CI%,1.03-1.51, p = 0.032), and 1.35 (95 CI,1.10-1.68, p = 0.005) for PFHS. Our study shows that total PFCs and PFHS were associated with an increased risk of kidney stones.A new dimension of learning lessons from the occurrence of hazardous events involving dangerous substances is considered relying on the availability of representative data and the significant evolution of a wide range of machine learning tools. The importance of such a dimension lies in the possibility of predicting the associated nature of damages without imposing any unrealistic simplifications or restrictions. To provide the best possible modeling framework, several implementations are tested using logistic regression, decision trees, neural networks, support vector machine, naive Bayes classifier and random forests to forecast the occurrence of the human, environmental and material consequences of industrial accidents based on the EU Major Accident Reporting System's records. Many performance metrics are estimated to select the most suitable model in each treated case. The obtained results show the distinctive ability of random forests and neural networks to predict the occurrence of specific consequences of accidents in the industrial installations, with an obvious exception concerning the performance of this latter algorithm when the involved datasets are highly unbalanced.The ubiquity of microplastics in the environment has caused great influence to ecosystems and seriously threatened human health. To better understand the variation in microplastics in different seasons in an inland freshwater environment and determine the sources of microplastic pollution and its migration features, this study investigated the characteristics of microplastic pollution during dry (April) and wet (July) seasons in surface water of the Manas River Basin, China. The size, color, shape, area distribution and compound composition of microplastics were studied. Moreover, the risk of microplastic contamination was explored based on risk assessment models. The results demonstrated that the degree of pollution caused by microplastic abundance was minor in this study area. The average abundance of microplastics in April (17 ± 4 items/L) was higher than that in July (14 ± 2 items/L). The range in the abundance of microplastics in April and July were 22 ± 5-14 ± 3 items/L and 19 ± 2-10 ± 1 items/L, respectively. Highly hazardous polymers such as Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and Polycarbonate (PC) have a significant impact on the results of the evaluation of the presence of microplastics. The mean values decrease due to seawater penetrations or to collections of atmospheric waters in a basin. Those water saturates the soil and prevents radon emanation and exhalation. The emanation of radon to the surface requires transporting agents. In geothermal fields, hot water or fluids take on this task. For that reason, geothermal fields can represent high soil radon. As radon was classified as a human carcinogen, our study area and whole Aydın province which has rich geothermal potential must be surveyed for public health.Coal ash spills occasionally occur due to the accidental failure of surface impoundments, and toxic metal-laden ash can pose a serious health threat to adjacent aquatic ecosystems. Here, we performed an investigation into longitudinal variations of mercury (Hg) contamination in the Dan River (North Carolina, United States) about 17 and 29 months after a February 2014 coal ash spill incident, in which the reported Hg concentrations in the spilled coal ash (210 ng/g) were 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than the river sediments (2-61 ng/g). We examined total Hg (THg) and methyl Hg (MeHg) in sediments from 0 to 65 km downstream of the spill, and found that most of the variations of THg and MeHg in surface sediments (0-16 cm) could be well accounted by the organic matter content and appeared to be not contaminated by Hg derived from coal ash. In examining MeHg bioaccumulation in invertebrates (aquatic and riparian) and fish in the Dan River and fish in a reservoir downstream of Dan River, we found no evidence of elevated MeHg bioaccumulation due to the 2014 coal ash spill.
