This work reports on the synthesis and characterization of a series of mononuclear thiosemicarbazone nickel complexes that display significant catalytic activity for hydrogen production in DMF using trifluoroacetic acid as the proton source. E7080 supplier The ligand framework was chemically modified by varying the electron-donating abilities of the para substituents on the phenyl rings, which was expected to impact the capability of the resulting complexes to reduce protons into hydrogen. Over the four nickel complexes that were obtained, the one with the thiomethyl substituent, NiSCH3, was found to overtake the catalytic performances of the parent complex NiOCH3 featuring lower overpotential values and similar maximum turnover frequencies. These results confirm the electronic effects of the ligand on HER when using thiosemicarbazone nickel complexes and support that chemical modifications can tune the catalytic performances of such systems.A novel series of zinc complexes, [EtZn(dab)]2 (1), [EtZn(damb)]2 (2), [EtZn(damp)]2 (3), and [EtZn(dadb)]2 (4), were prepared via single-step substitution. Further, these were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental analysis, single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The X-ray crystallography analysis revealed that all complexes exist as dimeric structures with distorted tetrahedral geometry having zinc centers that are interconnected via μ2-O bonding of the aminoalkoxy oxygen atom. TGA and thermal analysis of the complexes showed high volatilities and stabilities at sublimation temperatures of 70, 95, 90, and 105 °C at 0.5 Torr for the respective compounds. Precursor 3 was successfully used for ZnO thin film deposition by ALD. A growth rate per cycle (GPC) of 0.125 nm per cycle was obtained at 200 °C and XPS analysis confirmed the growth of highly pure ZnO films without carbon and nitrogen impurities, while XRD analysis revealed the deposition of reasonably crystalline films. Additionally, the high transmittance and wide bandgap of the films are suitable for optoelectronic applications.Air-stable secondary phosphine oxides (SPOs) are readily formed from diazaphospholene bromides. link2 In the presence of pinacolborane, these SPOs are transformed into catalytically active diazaphospholene hydrides. A silyl triflate transforms the SPOs into phosphenium triflates. The use of diazaphospholene SPOs as reduction reaction precatalysts was validated by imine reduction, conjugate reduction, pyridine hydroboration, and asymmetric reduction.Aged citrus peels (chenpi) have been used as a dietary supplement for gastrointestinal health maintenance in China. Recently, it was reported to exhibit anti-obesity activity. However, the relationship between the modulation effect of chenpi on gut microbiota and obesity prevention is not clearly understood. In this study, mice were fed with a high-fat diet (HFD), HFD supplemented with 0.25%- and 0.5%-chenpi extract, and normal diet, respectively, for 11 weeks. Chenpi extract significantly increased fecal short chain fatty acids by 43% for acetic acid and 86% for propionic acid. In addition, chenpi could decrease the prevalence of Proteobacteria and the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes by about 88% and 70%, respectively. Moreover, this study was the first work to demonstrate the dynamics of two beneficial bacteria-Akkermansia spp. and Allobaculum spp. in a dose- and time-dependent manner for chenpi treatment via monitoring the dynamic change of the gut microbiota. Metagenomic analysis of the gut microbiota showed that several pathways, such as a two-component system, a tight junction, Staphylococcus aureus infection and others, were enhanced dynamically. The improved biological process of metabolism especially in benzoate derivatives might refer to the increased metabolic transformation of polymethoxyflavones from chenpi in the colon. Our study indicated that the modulation effect of chenpi on the gut microbiota may be an important pathway for its anti-obesity mechanisms.Tissues transition between solid-like and fluid-like behavior, which has major implications for morphogenesis and disease. These transitions can occur due to changes in the intrinsic shape of constituent cells and cell motility. We consider an alternative mechanism by studying tissues that explore the energy landscape through stochastic dynamics, driven by turnover of junctional molecular motors. To identify the solid-fluid transition, we start with single-component tissues and show that the mean cell-shape index uniquely describes the effective diffusion coefficient of cell movements, which becomes finite at the transition. We generalize our approach to two-component tissues, and explore cell-sorting dynamics both due to differential adhesion and due to differential degree of junctional fluctuations. We recover some known characteristic scaling relations describing the sorting kinetics, and discover some discrepancies from these relations in the case of differential-fluctuations-driven sorting. Finally, we show that differential fluctuations efficiently sort two solid-like tissues with a fluid intercompartmental boundary.Organohalide respiring bacteria (OHRB) express reductive dehalogenases for energy conservation and growth. Some of these enzymes catalyze the reductive dehalogenation of chlorinated and brominated pollutants in anaerobic subsurface environments, providing a valuable ecosystem service. Dehalococcoides mccartyi strains have been most extensively studied owing to their ability to dechlorinate all chlorinated ethenes - most notably carcinogenic vinyl chloride - to ethene. The genomes of OHRB, particularly obligate OHRB, often harbour multiple putative reductive dehalogenase genes (rdhA), most of which have yet to be characterized. We recently sequenced and closed the genomes of eight new strains, increasing the number of available D. mccartyi genomes in NCBI from 16 to 24. From all available OHRB genomes, we classified predicted translations of reductive dehalogenase genes using a previously established 90% amino acid pairwise identity cut-off to identify Ortholog Groups (OGs). Interestingly, the majority of D. momes examined herein. Given the utility of the RdhA sequence classification to comparative analyses, we are building a public web server () for the community to use, which allows users to add and classify new sequences, and download the entire curated database of reductive dehalogenases.A novel method for the synthesis of 3-(2-quinolyl) chromones through a tandem [3+2] cycloaddition/ring-opening/O-arylation from ynones and quinoline N-oxides has been developed. This protocol proceeds under transition metal- and additive-free conditions and can be amplified to the gram level in 91% yield. 3-(1-Isoquinolyl) and 3-(2-pyridyl) chromones are also successfully synthesized using isoquinoline and pyridine N-oxides under basic conditions. Various heteroarene-contaning chromones were afforded in 30-98% yields, which are difficult to be obtained and are compounds of interest in pharmaceutical chemistry and chemical biology.Bis(1,2-dionedioximato) complexes of Pt(ii) are known for their propensity to form linear chains of metal complexes in the solid state, and under the application of pressure members of the family display interesting optical and conductive properties. Two examples, Pt(bqd)2 and Pt(dmg)2, are known to undergo insulator-to-metal-to-insulator transitions, with the metallic state reached at 0.8-1.4 GPa and 5 GPa, respectively. link3 Previous interpretations of these materials' behaviour focused on the role of the filled dz2 and vacant p orbitals on platinum, with little consideration to the role of the ligand. Here, the pressure-structural behaviour of Pt(bqd)2 is investigated through single crystal X-ray diffraction, the first such study on this material. The difference in conductive behaviour under pressure between Pt(bqd)2 and Pt(dmg)2 is then interpreted through a combination of experimental and computational methods, including conductivity measurements under high pressure and electronic structure calculations. Our computational work reveals the significant contribution from ligand low-lying vacant π-orbitals to the frontier orbitals and bands in these complexes, and provides an explanation for the experimentally observed re-entrant insulator-to-metal-to-insulator transitions, and the differences in behaviour between the two compounds.Quantifying phospholipid bilayer-small molecule interactions is vital to the development of new drug candidates and/or medicinal therapies. However, obtaining these data remains problematic. Herein, we detail a phospholipid nanodisc assay which enables the elucidation of these interactions using conventional solution state NMR spectroscopy techniques. The most commonly used bleaching agents contain different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. In the present case, the bleaching procedure was performed using an induced field of cold atmospheric plasma, obtained from dielectric barrier discharge. The therapeutic effect of the device used in the clinical procedure is based on floating electrode dielectric barrier discharge, in which the glass electrode functions as the primary electrode, while the therapeutic area, which in this case is the tooth, represents the secondary electrode. A periodontal (PA) probe is a glass tube filled with a noble gas, which generates an electrical discharge in the gap between the tip of the electrode surface and the therapeutic area, thus producing reactive oxygen species. Bleaching with only the cold atmospheric plasma bleaching technique, without any conventional bleaching agents, was performed successfully for an endodontically treated tooth. The cold atmospheric plasma bleaching technique, which could be a novel approach for the bleaching of non-vital teeth, provides good clinical results and is safe for clinical use.OBJECTIVES The aim of the present randomized controlled clinical trial was to evaluate the outcomes of the use of free gingival graft (FGG), of a collagen matrix and of vestibuloplasty to increase the amount of keratinized attached mucosa (KM) before healing abutment placement. METHOD AND MATERIALS The study was a randomized, parallel-group controlled investigation. All patients were treated to increase the KM width before placement of implant-supported prostheses. The implants were placed 3 to 6 months before the interventions. Three techniques were tested an apically positioned flap (control group), FGG (test group 1), and use of a collagen matrix (test group 2). Biopsy was performed during healing abutment placement by means of a mucotome. RESULTS A total of 63 patients were recruited and treated, and 58 were available for follow-up visits. After 4 weeks, the KM width gain was 1.93 ± 0.85 mm, 4.85 ± 1.11 mm, and 3.03 ± 0.58 mm, respectively, for control group, test group 1, and test group 2. Postoperative pain was significantly higher in the FGG group than in the others. Edema and hyperemia decreased gradually during the first week without significant differences among groups. CONCLUSION Despite the limitations of the study, it was found that FGG was the most effective technique to augment the amount of KM in sites of implant placement. The use of a collagen matrix could be a viable alternative to diminish the intervention's impact on patients' postoperative quality of life.
