3 Wheeler Buggies
A three-wheeler is perfect for tackling off-road terrain, offering the most comfortable ride for your baby. They are also easier to move and push than a four-wheeler, especially if they have fabric sling seats or modular seats that are set comfortably in the frame, delivering the best geometry and weight distribution.
Stability
Three-wheeled buggys are extremely stable, making them a great choice for off-road walking (especially when they are equipped with a seat unit that is all-terrain or off-road). They often feature oversized front wheels, which can cope well with kerbs and bumps as well as rough terrain. Some even feature a lockable front tire to provide extra stability on uneven terrain.
It's important to keep in mind that 3-wheel buggies may have a lower centre of gravity than 4-wheeled models and this can mean that they fall over more easily. That said, the best 3-wheel buggies have the perfect geometry and engineering to make them very stable in all conditions. They should be able to turn on a dime and be easy to steer with one hand. They also come with the ability to rotate 360o on the front wheel that is ideal for maneuvering over difficult terrain.
Look for models with pneumatic tyres. They are made to handle nonpaved tracks, and should be able to take on dirt, gravel, rocks and other debris. Many all-terrain buggies have a swivelling front wheel that can be locked to add stability when working on extremely rough terrain too.
A 3-wheel stroller is an excellent option for runners or those who like to walk quickly and uphill, especially when you plan to attach an infant car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, offering a world-facing seat that can recline flat and has improved 5-point harness and storage space for all your gear (plus an extendable 50+ sun hood). It is lightweight and compact, and is suitable for use starting at birth. It can be used with a car seat or carrycot. It can also handle a bit of light jogging, but isn't designed for serious runners.
Weight
If you are seeking a buggy that can tackle difficult terrain, then you should pick one with large tires. These are designed to handle dirt, cobbles, and grass tracks with ease while providing an enjoyable ride. They're also ideal for jogging because they come with suspension and are simple to get up and down kerbs. However, they're quite heavy to push.
The most suitable 3 wheel buggy for rough terrain is the Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 (pictured above). This 3-wheeler is highly maneuverable due to its 16 rear wheels and an adjustable front wheel that locks. It comes with air tyres that require occasional pumping, and it can carry a child up to 3. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler was awed by the seat shape and she was able to steer it easily with her 3 year old on board.
The Baby Jogger Versa GT is another excellent option. It has an adjustable handlebar, a hood made of high-end materials that offers 50+ UV protection and a high quality hood. It's also easy to move up and down kerbs, and it can fit in small car boots. It can also be used as a pram with an infant car seat for infants and toddlers.
Fabric sling seats sit snugly within the frame of the buggie instead of sitting on top of it as modular seats. This design has an lower centre of gravity at the perfect height, making it easier to push and lighter to pop the kerb (you cannot underestimate how often you'll be doing this as a new parent!)
Seating
The capacity for 3 wheelers is quite impressive, and there are a number of different options to pick from. The carrycot included is ideal for a baby (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a comfortable and cosy lying-flat bed that can be used both in and out of the buggy). Older infants and toddlers will enjoy the spacious and comfortable seat unit with adjustable ventilation. The seats do not fully recline, but they can be adjusted to the lowest setting. This should still allow your child plenty of room and headroom.
A sling seat made of cloth is also available. It is set snugly inside the frame rather than sitting on top as the modular seat. This delivers a much lower centre of gravity as well as a perfect weight distribution. This makes it much easier and lighter to push especially when you're on bumpy terrain or curbs. MFM reviewer Kath really liked the way this kind of seat dealt with these obstacles.
This type of buggy comes with an extensive basket and other useful features such as an extendable hood with 50+ UV protection, a simple to use brake pedal, and some innovative visibility lights that can be placed in front of occupants for improved safety on difficult terrain.
If you're looking for a buggy that can grow with your family it's the sport(tm) is a world first designed to accommodate the newborn, and later be adapted to accommodate three or more children as they grow. All within a single footprint.
Storage
The 3-wheeled frame makes a buggy more sturdy to push one-handed and is also ideal for handling difficult terrain. However, it does mean that the shopping basket doesn't hold as much as a 4-wheeler buggy.
A high-quality ATP will come with a great suspension, pneumatic tyres as well as a padded handle to ensure your convenience. It will accommodate a car seat, which means you can use it from the time of birth.
MFM's reviewers discovered that the 3-wheeler frame didn't fit through their home's doors or car boot. If 3 wheeled pushchair concerned about space, be sure to verify the dimensions when the buggy is folded before purchasing.
It's worth looking for an SUV with three wheels that can fit 2 (or even 3!) This is the best choice for your future and will save you money. The iCandy strawberry sport is one of the most popular; it can be used as a single seat from day dot and then converts to a twin buggies when your baby starts walking.
Tyres
These tyres absorb bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's journey more comfortable. They are commonly found on pushchairs like the Phil & Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath found to offer "an amazing ride for my toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres on it made it easier to handle cobbles and kerbs.
These tyres are sometimes difficult to maintain and will require air pressure regularly topped up. These tyres are prone to punctures, so it is recommended to always carry a repair kit and spare inner tube with you when you're out and about.
PU tyres are typically found on pushchairs as they are less expensive than air-filled tyres, but they are just as durable. You can identify PU tyres by their matte appearance and soft, smooth feel. They also glide well on even and tied surfaces.
It's usually possible to tell the difference between PU and air-filled tyres by running your hand over each one, if it feels hard then it's rubber and if it slides then it's a PU. You can also check whether your buggy comes with PU tyres sliding them across a flat, clean surface. They should roll easily and fit snugly into wheel hubs.
Foam tyres are typically used in high-performance buggies and joggers because they can cope with the rough terrain associated with this kind of pushchair. This can make your buggy less stable as the foam loses its springy nature. The tyres can also be noisy, as they make lots of noise when you turn or drive around town.
