Participants were exposed to black-and-white stripes (OKS) that moved vertically (upward or downward) or remained static (control condition). During the OKS, participants were asked to verbally classify auditory one-digit numbers as larger/smaller than 5 (comparison task; Exp. 1) or as odd/even (parity task; Exp. 2). OKS modulated response times in both experiments. In Exp.1, upward attentional displacement decreased the Magnitude effect (slower responses for large numbers) and increased the Distance effect (slower responses for numbers close to the reference). In Exp.2, we observed a complex interaction between parity, magnitude, and OKS, indicating that downward attentional displacement slowed down responses for large odd numbers. Moreover, eye tracking analyses revealed an influence of number processing on eye movements both in Exp. 1, with eye gaze shifting downwards during the processing of small numbers as compared to large ones; and in Exp. 2, with leftward shifts after large even numbers (6,8) and rightward shifts after large odd numbers (7,9). These results provide evidence of bidirectional links between number and space and extend them to the vertical dimension. Moreover, they document the influence of visuo-spatial attention on processing of numerical magnitude, numerical distance, and parity. Together, our findings are in line with grounded and embodied accounts of numerical cognition.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a potential hazard for public health. These man-made-chemicals are non-degradable with an elimination half-life of multiple years, causing accumulation in the environment and humans. Rodent studies demonstrated that PFAS are harmful, especially when present during the critical window in the first months of life. Because longitudinal data during infancy are limited, we investigated longitudinal plasma levels in infants aged 3months and 2years and its most important determinants.

In 369 healthy term-born Dutch infants, we determined plasma PFOS, PFOA, PFHxS, PFNA and PFDA levels at age 3months and 2years, using liquid chromatography-electrospray-ionization-tandem-mass-spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS). We studied the associations with maternal and child characteristics by multiple regression models.

At age 3months, median plasma levels of PFOS, PFOA, PFHxS, PFNA and PFDA were 1.48, 2.40, 0.43, 0.23 and 0.07ng/mL, resp. In this study, a new analytical model was developed to simulate the emission behaviors for both VOCs and SVOCs under ventilated conditions. Based on this model, we further introduced a hybrid optimization method to accurately determine the key parameters in the model the initial emittable concentration, the diffusion coefficient, the material/air partition coefficient, and the chamber surface/air partition coefficient (for SVOCs). Experiments for VOC emissions from solid wood furniture were performed to determine the key parameters. We also evaluated the hybrid optimization method with the data of flame retardant emissions from polyisocyanurate rigid foam and VOC emissions from a panel furniture in the literature. selleckchem The correlation coefficients are high during the fitting process (R2 = 0.92-0.99), demonstrating effectiveness of this method. Reported single-channel mode separation algorithms mainly focused on offering a time-frequency representation (TFR) where the energy distributions of individual modes were apart from each other. However, such approaches are still limited to identifying the modes without significant overlapping in time-frequency domain. In this study, a spectrogram decomposition technique was developed based on a combination strategy of generalized separable nonnegative matrix factorization (GS-NMF) and adaptive basis learning, towards the automatic mode extraction under severe overlapping and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The extracted modes were further used for cortical thickness estimation. The method was verified using broadband simulated and experimental datasets. Experiments were conducted on a bone-mimicking plate and bovine cortical bone plates. For simulated data, the relative errors between extracted and theoretical dispersion curves are 1.33% (SNR = ∞), 1.43% (SNR = 10 dB) and 0.88% (SNR = 5 dB). The root-mean-square errors of the estimated thickness for 3.10 mm-thick bone-mimicking plate, 3.83 mm- and 4.00 mm-thick bovine cortical bone plates are 0.039 mm, 0.049 mm, and 0.052 mm, respectively. It is demonstrated that the proposed method is capable of separating multimodal UGWs even under significantly overlapping and low SNR conditions, further facilitating the UGW-based cortical thickness assessment.

The objectives were to describe CV therapeutic agent (CVTA) prescribing patterns in primary care practices in the United Kingdom (UK)and to evaluate recorded clinical signs, diagnostic testsand justifications for use of torasemide, a recently marketed and authorised loop-diuretic in the UK.

Electronic health records (EHRs) describing 3,579,420 consultations (1,043,042 unique dogs) were collated (1 April 2014 and 31 December 2018) by the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network from 270 veterinary practices. Consultations prescribing at least one CVTA were identified. Annual variation in individual CVTA prescriptions was analysed using mixed-effects binomial regression models. Free-text clinical narratives were manually read to determine the first-prescribing event for torasemide.

Here, we monitored contents of carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids and lipids in the mesocarp and endosperm of Macauba fruits until ripening. We selected three accessions from different Brazilian regions (southeast, MG; northeast, PE; and central-west, MS) that differ in the mesocarp lipid content of ripe fruits. Despite the anatomical differences, mesocarp and endosperm exhibited similar trends of metabolite accumulation for most of the analyzed compounds. In the mesocarp, total soluble protein, free amino acids, sucrose, starch and total lipids accumulate towards ripening, while glucose and fructose declined in all accessions. Endosperm differed from mesocarp solely in the amino acid content, which decreased in ripe fruits. In the endosperm, accessions accumulated carbohydrates differently. Accession PE showed comparable fructose and starch contents in the endosperm between the beginning of fruit development and ripening, while in accessions MG and MS, both compounds decreased and increased, respectively, towards ripening. Accession MG was highlighted by its highest lipid content in the two tissues indicating its potential for energy and cosmetic industries. Our results provide novel insights into metabolic changes underlying development and ripening of Macauba fruits and variability in oil content among accessions, indicating new targets for breeding programs.Young and mature leaves of three Acer truncatum varieties with different leaf colors were examined. Transcriptome sequencing and flavonoid metabolism were used to analyze the differential gene expression associated with different leaf colors and growth stages and the relationships between gene expression and flavonoid and anthocyanin contents to improve ornamental value and develop flavonoid-rich A. truncatum. The aim of this study was to characterise how exposures to copper, benzophenone and diclofenac across multiple generations altered molecular expression pathways in the marine copepod Gladioferens pectinatus. Results of the study demonstrated differential gene expression was observed in cultures exposure to diclofenac (569), copper (449) and benzophenone (59). Pathways linked to stress, growth, cellular and metabolic processes were altered by exposure to all three contaminants with genes associated with oxidative stress and xenobiotic regulation also impacted.
