Subchondroplasty® is a novel minimally invasive procedure for painful subchondral bone marrow lesions (BMLs). The aim of this systematic review was to characterize the clinical outcomes of the Subchondroplasty® procedure, a novel minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of BMLs. The hypothesis tested was that patients experience improvements in pain and functional outcomes following the Subchondroplasty® procedure.

MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and Clinicaltrials.gov were searched from database inception to search date (June 10, 2020) for all clinical studies which discussed Subchondroplasty®. Two reviewers independently screened 45 unique results and 17 studies were included in the final analysis. Data were collected regarding patient demographics, indications, pain, functional scores, conversion to TKA, and complications of the procedure.

All but one study were level IV evidence; the mean MINORS score was 9 ± 2. There were 756 patients included, 45.1% were female, and the mean age was 54yearstudies show Subchondroplasty® to benefit patients with BMLs through reduction in pain and improvement in function, along with a high degree of satisfaction following the procedure. The low short-to-medium term conversion rate to arthroplasty suggests that Subchondroplasty® may play a role in delaying more invasive and expensive procedures in patients with BMLs. Subchondroplasty® is a novel procedure that has promising initial findings, but requires further high-quality, comparative studies with long-term follow-up to better understand the outcomes of the procedure and impact clinical practice recommendations.

When participants are asked to make two bars haptically parallel, their performance deviates from what would be veridically parallel. This is hypothesized to be caused by the bias of the egocentric reference frame. Stimulating the use of an allocentric reference frame has previously been shown to improve performance in haptic parallelity matching. The aim of the current study was to investigate the influence of action video game experience on parallelity performance. We hypothesized that participants who extensively play action video games with a so-called 'bird's-eye view' are likely to process spatial information more allocentrically, resulting in better performance in haptic parallelity matching. This was tested in two groups of male participants, 10 participants with extensive action video gaming experience (AVGPs) and 10 participants without or hardly any action video gaming experience (NAVGPs). Additionally, the effect of visual-haptic practice on haptic parallelity performance was tested. In the haptic blocks, blindfolded participants had to feel the orientation of a reference bar with their non-dominant hand and had to match this orientation on a test bar with their dominant hand. In subsequent visual-haptic blocks, they had full view of the set-up and visually paralleled both bars. The aim of the present study was to describe how dimensions of psychosocial health were distributed among different intervention groups of adolescents with a GD diagnosis from the Hamburg Gender Identity Service before and after treatment. Participants included n = 75 adolescents and young adults from a clinical cohort sample, measured at their initial intake and on average 2 years later (M treatment duration = 21.4 months). All cases were divided into four different intervention groups, three of which received medical interventions. At baseline, both psychological functioning and quality of life scores were significantly below the norm mean for all intervention groups. At follow-up, adolescents in the gender-affirming hormone (GAH) and surgery (GAS) group reported emotional and behavioral problems and physical quality of life scores similar to the German norm mean. However, some of the psychosocial health outcome scores were still significantly different from the norm. Because this study did not test for statistically significant differences between the four intervention groups or before and after treatment, the findings cannot be generalized to other samples of transgender adolescents. However, GA interventions may help to improve psychosocial health outcomes in this sample of German adolescents. Long-term treatment decisions during adolescence warrant careful evaluation and informed, participatory decision-making by a multidisciplinary team and should include both medical interventions and psychosocial support. The present study highlights the urgent need for further ongoing longitudinal research.
