Limited research has investigated the relationship between multiple health conditions and subsequent quitting activities at the population level. This study examines whether nine health conditions and concerns related to smoking are predictive of quit attempts and success among those who tried.
Data came from the International Tobacco Control Four Country Smoking and Vaping Survey conducted in Australia, Canada, England and the US. A total of 3998 daily smokers were surveyed in 2016 and recontacted in 2018. Respondents were asked in 2016 whether they had a medical diagnosis for depression, anxiety, alcohol problems, obesity, chronic pain, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and chronic lung disease, and whether they had concerns about past/future health effects of smoking. Outcomes were quit attempts and success (having been abstinent for at least one month between surveys).
Across all four countries, 44.4% of smokers tried to quit between the two survey years, and of these 36.8% were successful. Concerns about past (adjusted odds ratio, AOR=1.66, 95% CI 1.32-2.08, p<0.001) and future effects of smoking (AOR=2.17, 95% CI 1.62-2.91, p<0.001) and most health conditions predicted quit attempts, but were mostly unrelated to quit success, with concerns about future effects (AOR=0.59, 95% CI 0.35-0.99, p<0.05), chronic lung conditions (AOR=0.56, 95% CI 0.37-0.86, p<0.01) and chronic pain (with a trend) being associated with lower success.

The stress and anxiety during this unprecedented public health crisis may lead current smokers to increase tobacco use or former smokers to relapse. Thus, this study aims to provide epidemiological evidence of the changes in smoking behavior among British smokers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and assess the impact of psychosocial factors on these behaviors.
A nationwide survey of a representative sample of 4075 UK respondents aged >16 years was conducted between 27 April and 24 May 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Psychosocial and demographic variables between different smoking behavior groups were compared using Pearson's χ
test and Cramer's V.
Among current smokers (n=329), one-quarter (25.2%, n=86) reported smoking more than usual, 50.9% (n=174) reported smoking the same amount, and 20.2% (n=69) reported smoking less. Significant associations were observed between different smoking behavior groups and psychosocial factors. Pearson's χ
test revealed significant differences between different smoking behavior groups in their concerns about mental health (p<0.001), anxiety (p<0.001) and stress (p<0.001), state of low mood (p=0.012), in the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) score (p=0.018) and ranking on the Cantril Ladder scale (p<0.001). Many respondents expressed that the pandemic had a more negative impact on their mental health and the impact was more pronounced among those who smoked more.
Deterioration of mental health and psychosocial well-being were linked to increased smoking. Public health authorities should take proactive measures to provide mental healthcare and smoking cessation support as preventive measures to tackle the pandemic.

Tobacco use is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, particularly in South-East Asia. The tobacco problem in India is probably more complex than in any other country, with a huge consequential burden of tobacco related diseases and deaths. The present study aimed at analyzing the pattern and predictors of tobacco use among college students aged 18-24 years, using the Global Tobacco Surveillance System (GTSS).
A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2063 students, from 30 colleges of Mangalore, South India, who were selected by multistage sampling with probability proportional to size. The tobacco questions used for this study were a validated, recommended subset of key questions from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS). Data analysis was performed using GATS manuals and SPSS version 24.0.
A total of 2063 students participated in the study (738 males, 1325 females). Prevalence of tobacco smoking was 4.8%, which included 9.9% males and 2.1% females. Manufactured cigarettes were the mos, current smoking, and chewing tobacco, among the study population. Generating data in this part of the country on tobacco use and developing tobacco control measures at regular intervals are essential to better understand and develop effective intervention programs.
The prevalence of smoking is high within Chinese-Canadian communities and there is a lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate smoking cessation resources and services. We aimed to ascertain factors affecting smoking and smoking cessation from the perspectives of current smokers and key informants.
As part of a multistage mixed-methods study taking place from January 2013 to June 2014, a qualitative exploratory study design was conducted applying a community-based participatory research approach. Focus groups and interviews were conducted with adult (aged ≥19 years) Chinese-Canadian current smokers (≥5 cigarettes per day for the past 30 days) and interviews were held with key informants in Vancouver, Canada. A constant comparison method was applied to code data, and an inductive approach was used to identify emergent themes.

Current treatments involving use of muscle grafts are limited by tissue availability and donor site morbidity. In this study, we designed and synthesized an implantable glycosaminoglycan-based hydrogel system consisting of thiolated hyaluronic acid (HA) and thiolated chondroitin sulfate (CS) cross-linked with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate to promote skeletal muscle regeneration of VML injuries in mice. The HA-CS hydrogels were optimized with suitable biophysical properties by fine-tuning degree of thiol group substitution to support C2C12 myoblast proliferation, myogenic differentiation and expression of myogenic markers MyoD, MyoG and MYH8. Furthermore, in vivo studies using a murine quadriceps VML model demonstrated that the HA-CS hydrogels supported integration of implants with the surrounding host tissue and facilitated migration of Pax7+ satellite cells, de novo myofiber formation, angiogenesis, and innervation with minimized scar tissue formation during 4-week implantation. The hydrogel-treated and autograft-treated mice showed similar functional improvements in treadmill performance as early as 1-week post-implantation compared to the untreated groups. Taken together, our results demonstrate the promise of HA-CS hydrogels as regenerative engineering matrices to accelerate healing of skeletal muscle injuries.Poly(ether imide) (PEI) has shown satisfactory corrosion protection capability with good adhesion strength as a coating for magnesium (Mg), a potential candidate of biodegradable orthopedic implant material. However, its innate hydrophobic property causes insufficient osteoblast affinity and a lack of osseointegration. Herein, we modify the physical and chemical properties of a PEI-coated Mg implant. A plasma immersion ion implantation technique is combined with direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering to introduce biologically compatible tantalum (Ta) onto the surface of the PEI coating. The PEI-coating layer is not damaged during this process owing to the extremely short processing time (30 s), retaining its high corrosion protection property and adhesion stability. The Ta-implanted layer (roughly 10-nm-thick) on the topmost PEI surface generates long-term surface hydrophilicity and favorable surface conditions for pre-osteoblasts to adhere, proliferate, and differentiate. OT-82 clinical trial Furthermore, in a rabbit femur study, the Ta/PEI-coated Mg implant demonstrates significantly enhanced bone tissue affinity and osseointegration capability. Although various cytokines or chemokines have been widely applied in periodontal in situ tissue engineering, most of them are macromolecular proteins with the drawbacks of short effective half-life, poor stability and high cost, which constrain their clinical translation. Our study aimed to develop a difunctional structure for periodontal tissue regeneration by incorporating an angiogenic small molecule, dimethyloxalylglycine (DMOG), and an osteoinductive inorganic nanomaterial, nanosilicate (nSi) into poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) fibers by electrospinning. The physiochemical properties of DMOG/nSi-PLGA fibrous membranes were characterized. Thereafter, the effect of DMOG/nSi-PLGA membranes on periodontal tissue regeneration was evaluated by detecting osteogenic and angiogenic differentiation potential of periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) in vitro. Additionally, the fibrous membranes were transplanted into rat periodontal defects, and tissue regeneration was assessed with histological evaluation, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), and immunohistochemical analysis. DMOG/nSi-PLGA membranes possessed preferable mechanical property and biocompatibility. PDLSCs seeded on the DMOG/nSi-PLGA membranes showed up-regulated expression of osteogenic and angiogenic markers, higher alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and more tube formation in comparison with single application. Further, in vivo study showed that the DMOG/nSi-PLGA membranes promoted recruitment of CD90+/CD34- stromal cells, induced angiogenesis and osteogenesis, and regenerated cementum-ligament-bone complex in periodontal defects. Consequently, the combination of DMOG and nSi exerted admirable effects on periodontal tissue regeneration. DMOG/nSi-PLGA fibrous membranes could enhance and orchestrate osteogenesis-angiogenesis, and may have the potential to be translated as an effective scaffold in periodontal tissue engineering.
