In this work, a nonmetal catalyst for NaBH4 hydrolysis was fabricated through covalent modification of silica nanoparticles with protonated poly(ethylene imine). The successful formation of the catalyst was verified by transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The fabricated catalyst shows excellent activity in catalyzing NaBH4 hydrolysis reactions. The hydrolysis of 15 mg NaBH4 catalyzed by 50 mg catalyst could provide a hydrogen generation rate as high as 117.53 mL min-1   g cat - 1 at 20 °C. The utility of primary culture of aspiration residual specimens to improve the accuracy in differential diagnosis between hepatocellular carcinoma and benign lesions was investigated. A total of 337 patients (hepatocellular carcinoma proven by aspiration 277, by other modalities 35, benign nodules 25) were included. The growth patterns of cancer cells at the 14th day of primary culture from aspiration proven hepatocellular carcinoma patients were applied as criteria for analysis. Hepatocellular carcinoma proven by aspiration showed higher incidence of outgrowth of cancer cells than those not proven by aspiration or the incidence of outgrowth of hepatocyte antigen positive cells in benign lesions (all P 2 cm. These nanostructures comprise polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) that behave as a nanocage that can be functionalized with terpyridine-based organic ligands, which can be easily complexed with europium (III) ions. The complexes were characterized by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and their stoichiometry was also confirmed by 1 H NMR spectroscopy. In the presence of the Eu(III) ions, the octafunctionalized nanocages self-assemble to form 3D architectures that display an intense red-emission, especially in the solid state. The presence of an alkenyl group bridging the inorganic core to the organic moiety was employed to tune the emission properties by trans-cis isomerization of the double bond. In the case of the octafunctionalized nanocages (O-POSS), this isomerization was monitored in the presence of Eu(III) cations and was accompanied by an evident colour change from blue (trans-O-POSS) to red (Eu@trans-O-POSS) and finally to green (cis-O-POSS) as consequence of the release of the metal cations. KGaA, Weinheim.Red wine compounds have been reported to reduce the rate of atherosclerosis by inducing nitric oxide (NO) production and antioxidant enzyme expression in vascular endothelial cells (VECs). The present study compared the effects of the three red wine compounds resveratrol and its dimers, ε-viniferin and δ-viniferin, on VECs function for the first time. Both 5 μM ε-viniferin and δ-viniferin, but not 5 μM resveratrol, significantly stimulated wound repair of VECs. Increased levels of wound repair induced by 10 and 20 μM ε-viniferin were significantly higher than those stimulated by 10 and 20 μM resveratrol, respectively. These stimulatory effects of the three compounds were suppressed by the NO synthase inhibitor L-NAME. When VECs were exposed to each compound, endothelial NO synthase was activated and the expression of sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) and HO-1 was induced. Addition of the SIRT1 and HO-1 inhibitors EX527 and ZnPPiX, respectively, suppressed wound repair stimulated by the three compounds, demonstrating that SIRT1 and HO-1 are involved in these wound repair processes.
