The electronic properties and their modulations for the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in various nanoscale diamonds are of profound current interest because of their potential applications. However, although the NV centers as chromophores in diamond are the most widely studied, surprisingly, little is known about their magnetic spin coupling properties up to now. Here, we for the first time show, using the spin-polarized DFT calculations, that the NV centers can act as unique endohedral σ-diradical magnets in diamond nanoclusters and exhibit quite strong ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin coupling characteristics due to their unique endotetrahedral structures with favorable radical-radical contacts. Although the neutral NV center (NV0) in its doublet ground state exhibits quite strong AFM spin coupling among three radical C-sites (i.e., an AFM triradical center), interestingly, excess electron injection can convert it to a FM diradical magnet (i.e., the triplet ground state NV-) with almost unchanged J-coupling magnitude, and the J-coupling of the nanocluster can be noticeably enhanced by F-termination of the surface due to triradical spin delocalization mediated by excess electron. However, interior modification (one C in the endotetrahedron core is substituted by N or B or is hydrogenated) can assign the nanocluster perfect AFM diradical character. The spin coupling strength presents a quasilinear correlation with the distance between the two C radicals in the NV core for the same size of the clusters and a high linear correlation with the energy difference between two singly occupied molecular orbitals. Clearly, the FM and AFM couplings as well as their switching behavior in such NV defect diamond nanoclusters featuring the endohedral σ-diradicals are a novel type of promising magnetic material motifs. These findings open up promising spintronic application prospects of the NV diamonds and provide helpful information for the design of inorganic magnetic materials and logic devices.SERS-based breath analysis as an emerging technique has attracted increasing attention in cancer screening. Here, eight aldehydes and ketones in the human breath are reported as the VOC biomarkers identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and applied further for the noninvasive diagnosis of gastric cancer (GC) with a tubular SERS sensor. The tubular SERS sensor is prepared with a glass capillary loaded with ZIF-67-coated silver particles (Ag@ZIF-67), which offers Raman enhancement from the plasmonic nanoparticles and gas enrichment from the metal-organic framework (MOF) shells. The composite materials are modified with 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) to capture different aldehyde and ketone compounds. The tubular sensor is served simultaneously as a gas flow channel and a detection chamber, bringing a higher gas capture efficiency than the planar SERS sensor. As a proof-of-concept, the tubular SERS sensor is successfully employed to screen gastric cancer patients with an accuracy of 89.83%, based on the noninvasive, rapid, and easily operated breath analysis. The results demonstrate that the established breath analysis method provides an excellent alternative for the screening of GC and other diseases. This paper introduces memristors realized by molecular and DNA reactions. Molecular memristors process one input molecule, generate two output molecules, and are realized using two molecular reactions with two different rate constants. The DNA memristors are realized using five DNA strand displacement (DSD) reactions with two effective rate constants. The hysteresis behavior is preserved in the proposed memristors, and this behavior can be altered by changing the ratios of the rate constants. The state of the memristor can be computed from the concentrations of the two output molecules using bipolar fractional coding. We describe how the proposed memristors can be used to learn the spatial and temporal properties of data via the reservoir computing (RC) model. An RC system can be divided into two parts reservoir and readout layer. The first part transfers the information from the input space to a high-dimensional spatiotemporal feature space represented by the state of reservoirs. The connectivity structure of the reservoir will remain fixed through the dynamical evaluations. The readout layer effectively maps the projected features to the target output. A dynamical memristor array is used to implement an RC system that exploits the internal dynamical processes of the memristors. The readout layer implements a matrix-vector multiplication using molecular reactions, also based on bipolar fractional coding. All molecular reactions are mapped to DSD reactions. The RC system based on the DNA reservoir and the DNA readout layer is used to solve a handwritten digit recognition task and a second-order time series prediction task. The performance of the DNA RC system is comparable to that of an electronic memristor RC system for both tasks.Applications of two-dimensional (2D) perovskites have significantly outpaced the understanding of many fundamental aspects of their photophysics. The optical response of 2D lead halide perovskites is dominated by strongly bound excitonic states. However, a comprehensive experimental verification of the exciton fine structure splitting and associated transition symmetries remains elusive. Here we employ low temperature magneto-optical spectroscopy to reveal the exciton fine structure of (PEA)2PbI4 (here PEA is phenylethylammonium) single crystals. We observe two orthogonally polarized bright in-plane free exciton (FX) states, both accompanied by a manifold of phonon-dressed states that preserve the polarization of the corresponding FX state. Introducing a magnetic field perpendicular to the 2D plane, we resolve the lowest energy dark exciton state, which although theoretically predicted, has systematically escaped experimental observation (in Faraday configuration) until now. These results corroborate standard multiband, effective-mass theories for the exciton fine structure in 2D perovskites and provide valuable quantification of the fine structure splitting in (PEA)2PbI4.Dipstick assays using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) stabilized by a thin calix[4]arene-based coating were developed and used for the detection of Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG in clinical samples. The calixarene-based coating enabled the covalent bioconjugation of the SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein via the classical EDC/sulfo-NHS procedure. It further conferred remarkable stability to the resulting bioconjugated AgNPs, as no degradation was observed over several months. In comparison with lateral-flow immunoassays (LFIAs) based on classical gold nanoparticles, our AgNP-based system constitutes a clear step forward, as the limit of detection for Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG was reduced by 1 order of magnitude and similar signals were observed with 10 times fewer particles. In real clinical samples, the AgNP-based dipstick assays showed impressive results 100% specificity was observed for negative samples, while a sensitivity of 73% was determined for positive samples. These values match the typical sensitivities obtained for reported LFIAs based on gold nanoparticles. These results (i) represent one of the first examples of the use of AgNP-based dipstick assays in the case of real clinical samples, (ii) demonstrate that ultrastable calixarene-coated AgNPs could advantageously replace AuNPs in LFIAs, and thus (iii) open new perspectives in the field of rapid diagnostic tests. These 4 cases demonstrate how cognitive bias can impede the diagnostic process. These agents are not first-line treatments for many of the conditions for which they are used. This work investigates the crystalline properties of MAPbI3 deposited by the thermal coevaporation of PbI2 and MAI, where the MAI evaporation rate is controlled by setting different temperatures for the MAI source and the PbI2 deposition rate is controlled with a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Using grazing incident wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), we identify the formation of a secondary orthorhombic phase (with a Pnma space group) that appears at MAI source temperatures below 155 °C. With synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence (XRF) microscopy, we show that the changes in crystalline phases are not necessarily due to changes in stoichiometry. The films show a stochiometric composition when the MAI source is heated between 140 to 155 °C, and the samples become slightly MAI rich at 165 °C. Increasing the MAI temperature beyond 165 °C introduces an excess of MAI in the film, which promotes the formation of films with low crystallinity that contain low-dimensional perovskites. When they are incorporated in solar cells, the films deposited at 165 °C result in the champion power conversion efficiency, although the presence of a small amount of low-dimensional perovskite may lead to a lower open-circuit voltage. We hypothesize that the formation of secondary phases in evaporated films limits the performance of PSCs and that their formation can be suppressed by controlling the MAI source temperature, bringing the film toward a phase-pure tetragonal structure. Control of the phases during perovskite evaporation is therefore crucial to obtain high-performance solar cells.
