Voting is one of our civic duties, yet many Americans do not vote, and physician voter participation is even lower than that of the general public. We aimed to explore pediatric residents' attitudes and behaviors in regard to voting and assess the impact of interventions aimed at increasing resident participation.
Pediatric residents were given preelection surveys regarding interest in voting, plans to vote in the November 2016 national election, and barriers to participation. There are many factors that influence medical students' (MS) decisions when choosing a career. Some prominent factors include life-work balance, indebtedness, and flexibility of work hours. Whereas the expression of empathy has many positive correlates with a trusting and meaningful physician-patient interaction, only a few studies have analyzed the association of MS empathy expression and primary care residency selection. The results of these studies about the relationship of MS expression of empathy and their selection of primary care specialties have been conflicting, depending on the empathy instrument used. In addition, there have been other variables that have affected career decision making in more recent years not previously encountered. From 2019 to 2020 we reviewed seven documents created to guide learning and structure educational training for OBGYN residency and fellowship programs in the United States the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) Educational Objectives Core Curriculum in Obstetrics and Gynecology, the 2016 Educational Objectives-Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, and the 2018 Guides to Learning in Complex Family Planning, Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery, Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Each document was reviewed by two authors to assess for items referring to pain or opioids.
The CREOG educational objectives, used to inform educational curricula for residency programs, were the most comprehensive, mentioning pain and/or opioid educational objectives the highest number of times and including the most categories. The CREOG document was followed by the Guides to Learning for Gynecologic Oncology and for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery. link2 The Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Guide to Learning did not mention pain and/or opioids in the educational objectives.

In this report, we investigated the molecular mechanism underlying a deafness-associated tRNAIle 4295A>G mutation affecting a highly conserved adenosine at position 37, 3' adjacent to the tRNA's anticodon. Primer extension and methylation activity assays revealed that the m.4295A>G mutation introduced a tRNA methyltransferase 5 (TRMT5)-catalyzed m1G37 modification of tRNAIle. Dual nicking RGNs and high-specificity RGNs both exhibit low off-target activities. Here, we report that high-specificity Cas9 nucleases are convertible into nicking Cas9D10A variants whose precision is superior to that of the commonly used Cas9D10A nickase. Dual nicking RGNs based on a selected group of these Cas9D10A variants can yield gene knockouts and gene knock-ins at frequencies similar to or higher than those achieved by their conventional counterparts. Moreover, high-specificity dual nicking RGNs are capable of distinguishing highly similar sequences by 'tiptoeing' over pre-existing single base-pair polymorphisms. Finally, high-specificity RNA-guided nicking complexes generally preserve genomic integrity, as demonstrated by unbiased genome-wide high-throughput sequencing assays. Thus, in addition to substantially enlarging the Cas9 nickase toolkit, we demonstrate the feasibility in expanding the range and precision of DNA knockout and knock-in procedures. The herein introduced tools and multi-tier high-specificity genome editing strategies might be particularly beneficial whenever predictability and/or safety of genetic manipulations are paramount.
Schistosomiasis in non-immune travellers can cause acute schistosomiasis, a multi-systemic hypersensitivity reaction. Little is known regarding acute schistosomiasis in children. link3 We describe acute schistosomiasis in paediatric travellers and compare them with adult travellers.
A retrospective study of paediatric travellers (0-18years old) diagnosed with schistosomiasis at Sheba Medical Center. Patients' findings are compared with those of adult travellers from the same travel groups.
18 children and 24 adults from five different trips to Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria and Laos were infected (90% of the exposed travellers). The median bathing time of the infected children was 30minutes (interquartile range 15-30minutes). The most common presentations were respiratory symptoms in 13 (72%), eosinophilia in 13 (72%) and fever in 11 (61%). link2 Acute illness included a median of 2.5 symptoms. Three children required hospitalization and three were asymptomatic. Fatigue was significantly less common in children comparedith a relevant travel history.
The impact that the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related early lockdown has had on dietary habits of the population and on food insecurity is unknown.
The aim of this study was to document the change in diet quality and in food insecurity observed during the COVID-19-related early lockdown. link3 We hypothesized that the lockdown was associated with a deterioration in overall diet quality and an increase in food insecurity.
Data are from a COVID-19 subsample of NutriQuébec, a web-based cohort destined to study temporal changes in dietary habits among adults in Quebec, Canada. Participants completed questionnaires before (between June 2019 and February 2020) and during (April to May 2020) early lockdown, including a validated web-based 24-h recall (n=853) and a questionnaire on food security (n=922). Primary study outcomes were temporal changes in diet quality measured by the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015 and in the prevalence of food insecurity.
There was a small increase in the HEI-2015 during they improved and prevalence of food insecurity was reduced in this sample of adults from Quebec during the COVID-19-related early lockdown. These results may be generalizable only to relatively healthy populations.
The present study aimed to determine the correlation between serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level and the severity of interstitial lung disease (ILD) in clinically amyopathic DM (CADM) patients.
We performed a retrospective study including 41 Chinese CADM patients without malignancy. Serum CEA levels, clinical and laboratory findings were collected. Association tests between CEA levels and disease activity parameters were performed.
Among the 41 patients, 16 (39.0%) developed rapidly progressive (RP)-ILD; of them, 14 (87.5%) had elevated serum CEA levels. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that an elevated serum CEA level was an independent risk factor for RP-ILD. The incidence of elevated CEA level was significantly higher in patients with RP-ILD than in those without RP-ILD (87.5 vs 16.0%, P < 0.001). Furthermore, CEA levels were higher in patients with CADM with RP-ILD [26.87 (6.71) μg/l] than in those without RP-ILD [3.23 (0.64) μg/l] (P < 0.001). CEA levels in CADM patients were associated with the ferritin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase levels, and CT scores of the lungs.
