3 Wheeler Buggies
A three-wheeled buggy is perfect for off-road terrain and provides the most comfortable ride for infants. They are also easier to push and maneuver than a four-wheel buggy and are especially suitable for those with fabric slings or modular seat units that are positioned tightly in the frame and provide the best geometry and distribution of weight.
Stability
A three-wheeled buggy offers excellent stability, which is the reason it is a great option for off-road walking (especially with an all-terrain or off-road style seat unit). These buggys often have oversized front tires that can withstand bumps, kerbs, and rough terrain. Some even come with a lockable front wheel to provide extra stability on uneven terrain.
It's important to remember that 3-wheel buggies have a lower center of gravity than the 4-wheeled versions, which could mean they can topple over more readily. That said, the best 3-wheel pushchairs are designed with perfect geometry and engineering to ensure they are stable in all weather conditions. They must be able to pivot at a single click, be easy to steer with just one hand and have a 360o swivelling front wheel that makes them great for manoeuvring and navigating difficult terrain.
Look for models that have pneumatic tyres. These are made to be able to navigate tracks that aren't paved and should be able to take on dirt, gravel, rocks, etc. Many all-terrain buggies come with an swivelling wheel at the front that can be locked to provide greater stability when dealing with rough terrain.
A 3-wheeler is an ideal option for runners or for those who like to walk fast and uphill, especially in the event that you're planning to connect an infant car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, with a wide-facing seat that can recline flat and has improved 5-point harness and storage space for all your equipment (plus an extension of 50+ sun hood). It's lightweight, compact and suitable for infants and can be used with car seats or a carrycot. It also allows for some moderate jogging, but it's not designed for serious runners.
Weight
If you're looking for a vehicle that can handle the tough terrain, then you'll need one with big wheels. These are made to handle cobbles, grass and dirt tracks with ease, while still providing smooth riding. They are also great for jogging as they come with built-in suspension and are easy enough to climb up and down kerbs. However, the drawback is that they are quite heavy to push.
The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the best 3 wheel buggy to use on rough terrain (pictured above). This 3-wheeler is highly maneuverable due to its 16 rear wheels as well as a lockable front wheel. It has air-filled tyres that require pumping up every now and then. It can accommodate children until the age of three. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler loved the shape of the seat and found it easy to drive with her 3-year-old riding along.
The Baby Jogger Versa GT is an alternative that is also a great choice. It comes with an adjustable handlebar, a hood made of high-end materials that offers 50+ UV protection as well as an extremely high-quality hood. It's also easy to move up and down kerbs, and it can fit in small car boots. It can also be used as a pram, with baby car seat for infants and toddlers.
Fabric slings are placed within the frame and not on top of the frame like modular seats. This design provides a lower center of gravity and a perfect height, instantly making it easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you cannot think about how often you'll be doing this when you're a new parent!)
Seating
There are a variety of alternatives for seating options in 3 wheelers. The included carrycot plus is ideal for a newborn (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a comfortable and cosy lie-flat bed that can be used in and out of the buggy). Older babies and toddlers will love the spacious and padded seat unit with adjustable ventilation. The seats do not fully recline, but they can be lowered to the lowest point. This should give your child plenty of headroom and space.
A sling seat made of cloth is also available. It is positioned snugly inside the frame, rather than over the top of an open-back seat. This delivers a much lower centre of gravity as well as a perfect weight distribution. This makes it much easier and lighter to push especially over bumpy terrain or curbs and MFM reviewer Kath really liked the way that this style of seat dealt with these obstacles.
This type of buggy has a large basket and other useful features, such as an extendable hood with 50+ UV protection, an easy to use brake pedal, and some unique visibility lights that can be positioned in front of the occupants to increase safety on rough terrain.
If you're searching for a stroller that can grow with your family, the sport(tm) is a world first designed to accommodate a newborn and then be adapted to accommodate two or three children as they grow, all within one footprint.
Storage
The 3-wheeled frame is much more stable and can be pushed with one hand. It's also ideal for terrain that is difficult. The shopping basket is smaller than a four-wheeler.
A top-quality ATP will come with a great suspension, pneumatic tyres, and an ergonomic handle that is cushioned for your convenience. It should also be equipped to carry car seats and a carrycot which means you can use it right from birth.
The MFM reviewers noted that the 3-wheeler frame didn't pass through their doors at home or car boot. If you're worried about space, be sure to check out the dimensions of the buggy when it is folded before purchasing.
Look for a 3-wheeler with 2 (or 3!) seats. seats once your family grows. These are the most efficient of both and will help you save money in the future. three wheel pushchair is among the most popular and can be used as a single from day dot and then converts to a twin buggies when your baby starts walking.
Tyres
Air filled tyres have been designed to provide your child with an easier ride by cushioning bumps and uneven surfaces. They are typically found on pushchairs like the Phil and Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath said was "an outstanding ride for her toddler". She also said that the grippy tires of the Phil & Ted's Sport made it easy for her to navigate the kerbs and other obstacles.
These tyres are sometimes difficult to maintain and need to have their air pressure regularly topped up. These tyres are more susceptible to punctures, so it is recommended to always carry an repair kit and spare inner tube with you when you're out and about.
PU tyres can be seen on more pushchairs than the air-filled tyres but they are still just as robust. PU tires are easily distinguished by their matte finish and supple feel. They also slide across flat and tidied surfaces.
If you run your hand over the tyres, you can tell if they're PU or rubber. If it feels as if it is sliding then it's a PU. You can also test whether your buggy is equipped with PU tyres, by sliding them onto a flat, clean surface. They should roll easily and fit comfortably into wheel hubs.
Foam tyres are able to withstand the rough terrain associated with high-performance buggies. This could make your buggy less stable since the foam loses its springy nature. These tyres are also noisy due to the fact that they create lots of noise when you turn or drive around town.
