3 Wheeler Buggies
A three-wheeler is perfect for tackling off-road terrain, offering the most comfortable ride for your baby. They are also easier to push and manoeuvre than a four wheel buggy and are especially suitable for those with fabric slings or seat units that are positioned tightly in the frame and provide the best geometry and distribution of weight.
Stability
A three-wheeled buggy offers excellent stability, which is the reason it is a great option for off-road walking (especially with an all terrain or off-road style seat). These buggys often have oversized front tires that can handle bumps, kerbs, and rough terrain. Some even have a lockable front wheel to give extra stability when driving on uneven terrain.
It's important to keep in mind that 3-wheel buggies have a lower center of gravity than 4-wheeled models which means that they can tip over more easily. But, the top 3-wheel pushchairs are designed with perfect geometry and engineering to ensure they are stable in all conditions. They should be able of turning on a dime, be easy to steer with one hand, and have 360o swivelling front wheels that makes them great for maneuvering and navigating difficult terrain.
For extremely difficult surfaces, look out for models with air-filled tyres also known as pneumatic tyres. These are made to handle non-paved tracks and are able to deal with dirt, gravel, and more. Many all-terrain buggies come with a swivelling wheel on the front that can be locked for extra stability when you're dealing with rough terrain.
A 3-wheel pram is also an ideal option for runners or for those who like to walk quickly and uphill, especially if you're planning to attach a carrycot or car seat. The Roma Atlas is a great example, with a wide-facing seat that can recline flat and features a more comfortable 5-point harness and storage space for all your equipment (plus an extendable 50+ sun hood). It's lightweight, compact and suitable for babies and can be used in conjunction with car seats or a carrycot. It can also be used for light jogging but it's not designed for serious runners.
Weight
If you're seeking a buggy that will take on tricky terrain, then you'll need one with large wheels. They can handle cobbles, grass, and dirt tracks and provide an enjoyable ride for anyone. They are also great for jogging as they have a suspension built-in and are easy to climb up and down kerbs. However, they are quite heavy to push.
The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the most suitable 3 wheel buggy to use on rough terrain (pictured above). This 3-wheel buggy has 16 rear wheels and an swivel wheel lockable to the front, so it's very manoeuvrable. It has air tyres, which require pumping occasionally and it can be used to carry a child until the age of 3. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler was awed by the shape of the seat and found it easy to drive with her 3 year old on board.
The Baby Jogger Versa GT is another excellent option. It comes with an adjustable handlebar, a top-quality hood that provides 50+ UV protection, and a high quality hood. It's also easy to get up and down kerbs, and it can fit into small car boot. It can also be used as a pram, with a carrycot or infant car seat for infants and toddlers.
Fabric slings are placed in the frame and not on top of the frame like modular seats. This design delivers a lower centre of gravity at the perfect height, making it easier to push and lighter to pop the kerb (you should never overestimate how often you'll be doing this as a new parent!)
Seating
There are many options for seating in three wheelers. For newborns you have the option to use the included carrycot plus (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cozy and comfortable lie flat bed that can be used both on and off the buggy) and older infants and toddlers can be seated in the parent or world-facing seat unit that is roomy and padded, and comes with adjustable ventilation. The seats don't fully recline, but they can be adjusted to the lowest point. This should still allow your child to have plenty of room and headroom.
A sling seat made of fabric is also available, which is set snugly inside the frame instead of over the top of an open-back seat. This gives a lower centre of gravity and perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, especially over bumpy terrain and curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this type of seat dealt with obstacles.
In addition to a large shopping basket, this kind of buggy generally has quite useful features, such as an extended 50+ UV hood, an easy-to-use brake pedal, and a few bright, game-changing lights that pop up from the handlebar and can be positioned in front of the passengers to improve their safety when they are tackling difficult terrain.
If you're looking for a buggy that will grow with your family The sport(tm) is a world first, can accommodate infants and be modified to fit two or three children as they grow. All in one footprint.
Stores
The 3-wheeled frame is much more sturdy and can be moved by one hand. It's also better for terrains that are difficult to navigate. The shopping basket is smaller than a 4-wheeler.
A high-quality ATP will have pneumatic tyres, a padded grip for added comfort, and a superb suspension. It will also be equipped to carry a carrycot and car seat and you can use it right from the moment you are born.
MFM's reviewers found that the 3-wheeler frames couldn't fit through their home doors or car boot. If you're concerned about space, be sure you check the dimensions of the buggy when it is folded before buying.
It's worth looking into a 3-wheeler that can take two (or even 3!) This is the best option for your future and can save you money. The iCandy strawberry sport is among the top of them and can be used as a single from day dot and later converts to a twin buggies when your baby starts walking.
Tyres
These tires cushion bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's journey more comfortable. They are commonly found on pushchairs like the Phil & Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath discovered to provide "an exceptional ride for my toddler". She also said that the grippy tyres make it easier to handle kerbs and cobbles.
These tyres are sometimes difficult to maintain and will need to have their air pressure regularly topped up. They are also more prone to punctures than foam tyres so you'll need to make sure that you have a repair kit along with a spare inner tube and pump handy when out and about with your buggy.
PU tyres can be found on more pushchairs than air-filled tyres, but they're just as sturdy. PU tire are easily identifiable by their matte finish and soft feel. They also slide on smooth and tidy surfaces.
You can usually discern the difference between PU and air-filled tyres by running your hand over each one, if it feels hard, then it's rubber and when it slides, it's a PU. You can also check whether your buggy has PU tyres by sliding the tyres over an even, clean surface - they'll be able to roll easily and should fit snugly into their wheel hubs.
Foam tyres can withstand the rough terrain of high-performance buggies. This can make your buggy less stable since the foam will lose its springy feel. These tyres are also noisy due to the fact that they create lots of noise when you turn and navigate around the town.
