3 Wheeler Buggies
A three-wheeler is ideal for rough terrain, offering an easy ride for your child. They are also easier to push and maneuver than a four-wheel buggy, particularly those with fabric slings or seat units, which are positioned tightly in the frame and deliver the best geometry and distribution of weight.
Stability
Three-wheeled buggys are extremely stable, which makes them a great choice for off-road walking (especially when equipped with a seat unit that is all-terrain or off-road). They typically have larger front wheels, which can cope well with kerbs and bumps and rough ground. Some models even come with a lockable front wheel for extra stability on uneven terrain.
It is important to remember that 3-wheel buggies can have a lower centre of gravity than models with four wheels, which can mean that they topple over more easily. The best 3-wheeled pushchairs have been built with the perfect design to ensure they stay stable in any condition. They should be able turn at a whim and be easy to steer with one hand. They also feature an incline of 360o for the front wheel, which is ideal for maneuvering over difficult terrain.
Look for models that have pneumatic tyres. They are made to handle nonpaved tracks, and are able to withstand mud, gravel, rocks, etc. A lot of all-terrain buggies have a swivelling wheel on the front that can be locked to provide extra stability when you're dealing with rough terrain.
A 3-wheeler is a good option for runners or for those who like to walk quickly and uphill, especially in the event that you're planning to connect a carrycot or car seat. The Roma Atlas is an excellent example. It has an incline-reclining seat that is flat, with five-point harnesses, and plenty of storage space to store all your equipment (plus an extendable 50+ sun hood). It's compact, lightweight and suitable for babies and can be used in conjunction with the use of a car seat or carrycot. It can also handle some light jogging but isn't intended for serious joggers.
Weight
If you're looking for a buggy to tackle difficult terrain, then you should select one with large tires. These will cope well over grass, cobbles, and dirt tracks and provide a smooth ride for any passenger. They are also ideal for jogging because they have a suspension built-in and are easy enough to climb up and down kerbs. However, the downside is that they are quite heavy to push.
The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the best 3 wheel buggy you can use on rough terrain (pictured above). The 3-wheel buggy comes with 16 rear wheels and a lockable swivel front wheel, so it's very manoeuvrable. It has air tyres which require pumping occasionally and it can be used to carry children until the age of 3. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler was awed by the shape of the seat and found it easy to drive with her 3-year-old in the seat.
The Baby Jogger Versa GT is another great option. It comes with a movable handlebar, a top-quality hood that provides 50+ UV protection and an extremely high-quality hood. It is also easy to move kerbs upwards and downwards and fits in a small car boot. It can also be used as a pram with a carrycot or infant car seat for newborns and toddlers.
Fabric sling seats are tucked inside the frame of the buggie, as opposed to over it like modular seats. This design delivers a lower center of gravity that is at the ideal height, making it easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you cannot think about the amount of times you'll have to do that as new parents!)
Seating
The capacity for seating of 3 wheelers is quite impressive and there are many different options to pick from. The carrycot that comes with it is ideal for a newborn (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a cozy and comfortable lay-flat bed that can be used both in and out of the buggy). Older children and toddlers will appreciate the spacious and padded seat with adjustable ventilation. The seats don't recline fully, but they can be adjusted to the lowest position. This should still give your child plenty of space and headroom.
A sling seat made of cloth is also available. It is positioned snugly inside the frame rather than over the top of an open-back seat. This delivers a much lower centre of gravity and perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier and lighter to push particularly over bumpy terrains or curbs. MFM reviewer Kath really liked the way this type of seat dealt with these challenges.
This type of buggy comes with a large basket and other useful features, such as an extendable hood with 50+ UV protection, an easy to use brake pedal, and some unique visibility lights that can be placed on the front of the passengers to ensure safety when riding on rough terrain.
Alternatively, if you are searching for a single baby buggy that will grow with your family There's a brand new sport(tm) which is a world's first that can take one baby from day dot and then change to take two or even three once your little ones have grown, all within the footprint of a single buggy.
Storage
The 3-wheeled frame makes the buggy more sturdy to push one-handed and also perfect for handling terrain that is difficult to navigate. However, it also means that the basket won't hold the same amount as a 4-wheeled buggy.
A top-quality ATP will have pneumatic tyres, a cushioned grip for added comfort, and a superb suspension. It should be able to accept a carrycot or car seat, which means you can use it right from birth.
MFM's reviewers have discovered that the 3-wheeler frame can't pass through all doors in their homes or small car boot - be sure you know the dimensions of the buggy once it's folded before purchasing if you're worried about space.
It's worth looking for 3-wheelers that can accommodate 2 (or even 3!) seats once your family grows - these are the most efficient of both and future proof your money. The iCandy Strawberry Sport is among the most well-known. It can be used from the day of birth as a single buggy, and then converted into twin buggies once your baby is walking.
Tyres
Air filled tyres are designed to provide your child with a more comfortable ride by cushioning bumps and uneven surfaces. They are commonly used on pushchairs such as the Phil and Ted's Sport, which MFM reviewer Kath said was "an outstanding ride for her toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres on it made it easy to tackle kerbs and cobbles.
These tyres can be difficult to maintain and will require having their air pressure topped up regularly. They are also more susceptible to punctures than foam tyres, so you'll need to make sure that you have a repair kit, spare inner tube and pump handy when you're out and about in your buggy.
PU tyres can be used on pushchairs since they are less expensive than air-filled tyres but are equally durable. 3 wheeled pushchair are easily distinguished by their matte finish and supple feel. They also slide well on uneven and tied surfaces.
If you move your hand over the tyres, then you can tell if they are rubber or PU. If it feels as if it's moving, then it is a rubber tyre, which is a. You can also confirm whether your buggy has PU tyres by slipping the tyres on a clean, flat surface - they'll be able to roll easily and fit comfortably in their wheel hubs.
3 wheel pushchair are able to withstand the rough terrain that comes with high-performance buggies. This could make your buggy less stable because the foam loses its springy nature. The tyres can also be noisy because they generate a lot noise when you turn and navigate around the town.
