French Door Refrigerator With Ice Maker Review

Melding form with functionality, French-door refrigerators have stylish double doors that open up to an enormous fridge on top and freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out due to their special features, including through-the-door dispensers and higher-end Ice makers.

We contacted Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect and founder of LS Projects - for her suggestions on how to pick the right home. We looked at the storage capacity, layout, and energy efficiency, among other factors.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

As the name suggests, GE's Profile series is targeted at consumers who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies in their kitchen. This refrigerator is packed with these, from an inside-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a smart water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. This fridge is expensive and I was expecting better.

Other than that however, this refrigerator is a great option. It has a large freezer compartment, which is uncommon in counter-depth French door fridges, and it holds a fair amount of frozen foods in comparison to similar models.

Inside the fridge, you'll find 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment is 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is about par for the size of a French door fridge costing this much. It also has an adequate-sized icemaker that is tucked away in the left-hand door, although it's not the largest I've seen.

You can alter the shelves in each compartment to create a customized storage layout for what you want to keep. The GE PYE22PYNFS's design for the interior is good-looking, too. The LED lighting adds an appealing touch. The in-door storage bins have a third shelf which can be folded down to store tall items. The drawers are equipped with temperature controls so you can set them for Beverage, Meat or Deli settings. The drawers are simple to open and shut however I found the textured plastic coatings to be a bit rough on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator comes with the complete set of features you'd expect from a fridge in this price range that includes Wi-Fi as well as app support through GE's SmartHQ software. The app is available for iOS and Android devices and allows you to control your refrigerator from any place across the globe. It also has many options for customization. It also gives you notifications when doors are left open, when the refrigerator or freezer needs to be defrosted and when it's time to change the filter.

It is nice if the GE PYE22PYNFS came with Precise Fill which is an option that is available in a few other GE refrigerators that allows you to preset how many cups of water you'd like to pour out at a time. The fridge displays a countdown timer to display how much water remains, but it's not as useful as Precise fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

It is designed to look as a seamless element of your kitchen, Bosch's French-door refrigerator is an eye-catching piece. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a veggie compartment that keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer and dual compressors to preserve food. The Ice maker is among the top we've tested and produces pyramid-shaped ice that is low in water consumption. This fridge is the perfect option for a single family or kitchenettes looking for a sleek design and top of the line food preservation.

This fridge was rated the best in our Refrigerators Test for a variety of reasons. Its freezer temperatures held firm at a level that was just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit and never changing by more than a fraction a degree--this is key in preventing freezing burn. The fridge's fridge section also performed well, reaching the desired initial set temperature within an hour and keeping that temperature steady over the course of our testing.

Bosch is known for its premium appliances and appliances, so it's not a surprise that this counter-depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance that has the option to connect to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app lets you monitor and control your fridge remotely from your smartphone or tablet. The refrigerator is costly and has great features and functions at a reasonable price.

It is important to know the limitations of your fridge. You may need to get creative with tall items because the fridge has a small shelf space. The shelves are not resistant to spills and are easily stained or damaged by sharp objects. It's easy to remove the trays in the fridge, but be sure to clean them regularly to prevent the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is a great counter-depth refrigerator that packs a lot of storage in an extremely compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. Inside, the fridge has the standard French-door layout, with gallon-sized door bins on each door, two rows of shelves that capture spills and a set of more spacious drawers. The top shelf on the right side can be folded to provide more space for taller items. There's also a full-width drawer for deli and an inside water dispenser.

This refrigerator has a freezer with an ice maker making it easy to transfer the frozen ice whenever you need it. french door fridge freezers features innovative design features such as sliding drawers that help you organize your items. It has a large bin for storing frozen food, and a separate container for ice.

Another awesome feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can manage the temperature, lighting and more of your fridge from your smartphone. It's a great method of monitoring and managing your refrigerator, especially when you're away from home.

But while the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it doesn't necessarily add to the overall performance of the refrigerator. This fridge took longer to chill food and defrost it than the other fridges we tested. This could be due to the larger capacity.

The doors pose a problem with this fridge. They have handles that are sunken on the front, which allow smaller people to open them from the bottom, but they're difficult for taller people to pull closed without slamming them. It would have been better if they came with a front-mounted handles.


The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a ideal option for those looking to combine the advantages of a French-door refrigerator's aesthetics with an efficient layout. Its capacity is superior to counter-depth models, and it cools evenly. It's also a bit less than the top counter-depth refrigerator that has an ice maker, which helps make it a popular choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good option if you want a French-door fridge that doesn't break the budget. It's a minimalist design that isn't as striking in appearance like some of the competitors, but it has enough features to make it a good pick. Its main feature is the temperature adjustable drawer, which helps keep foods such as meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also has a large water dispenser as well as a good ice machine that works fast.

Another nice feature is the "Chill Drawer" that sits over the two crisper bins. This drawer lets you direct the majority of the fridge's cooling power into this area, so it can be used to store food items that require special attention. This feature can be adjusted by using a slider on the outside of the drawer. You can also use this to set a general cooling level for the entire fridge, however, I've found that changing the general settings tends to be more effective than specific ones.

In my tests, I found that the temperatures of the refrigerator were fairly consistent in different parts of the refrigerator. The temperatures in the top and bottom of the fridge did not vary much from 38 degrees, and the middle of the fridge was within one degree of 36. This is a solid performance, but isn't quite at the top of our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also pair this fridge with an intelligent thermometer to get more precise measurements of your fridge's temperature.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's outside is made of stainless steel with a grey-bodied body which has a "smudge-proof" finish. It blocks streaks and fingerprints better than other stainless steel finishes I've tried.
