Combining form and function, French-door refrigerators offer elegant double doors that open up to a spacious fridge up the top and a freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out because of their distinctive features, such as through-the-door dispensers and higher-end ice makers.

We asked Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect and the founder of LS Projects - for her tips on how to select the best one. They considered storage capacity, layout and energy efficiency among other factors.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name implies that the GE Profile series targets those who want to incorporate cutting-edge technology in their kitchen. This fridge is loaded with them all from the Keurig K cup coffee maker on the door to a smart dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. This fridge is expensive, so I expected better.

This fridge is a good choice, despite the small blip. It has a large freezer compartment, which is uncommon in counter-depth French door fridges, and it holds a fair amount of frozen foods compared to similar models.

Inside the fridge, there are 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment is 18.5 cubic feet, which is standard for a French-door fridge at this price. It also has an adequate-sized icemaker packed into the left door, though it's not the biggest I've seen.

You can adjust the shelves in both compartments to create a customized storage layout for what you want to keep. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is also attractive. The LED lighting is a nice touch and the inside storage bins come with an additional shelf that can fold down to allow you to store tall items. The drawers have temperature controls that allow you to set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, however I found their textured plastic coatings to be a bit rough on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator is equipped with a all the features you'd expect from a refrigerator in this price range with Wi-Fi and app support through GE's SmartHQ software. The app, which is available for iOS and Android devices can let you control your fridge from anywhere in world, and has a ton of customization options. It also gives you notifications when doors are left open, when your fridge or freezer needs defrosting and when it's time to change the filter.

It is nice if the GE PYE22PYNFS included Precise fill, an option available in other GE fridges that allows you to preset how many cups of water you'd like to disperse simultaneously. It also has a countdown on the fridge display to display how much water you have left, but it's not as effective as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

It is designed to look as a seamless element of your kitchen Bosch's French-door refrigerator looks seamless and is an eye-catching piece. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also comes with a veggie compartment that keeps fruits and vegetables fresher longer and dual compressors for the best preservation of food. The ice maker is one of the most efficient we've ever tested, and it produces a pyramid-shaped form of ice with a low use of water. This refrigerator is ideal for a single family or a kitchenette that wants an elegant design and top of the best food preservation.


The fridge was rated the best refrigerator in our Refrigerators Test for several reasons. The freezer temperatures remained steady at just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, never changing more than a fraction of a degree--this is key to preventing freezing burn. The fridge section of the fridge also did well. It reached the initial temperature set within an hour, and remained at the temperature throughout our tests.

Bosch is known for its premium appliances and appliances, so it's not a surprise that this counter depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance that has the option to connect to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app allows you to monitor and control your refrigerator remotely on your tablet or smartphone. The refrigerator is expensive, but it comes with great features and capabilities for the cost.

While the fridge is an incredible appliance, it's important to know the limitations. It is possible to be creative with tall objects because the fridge is limited in shelf space. The shelves aren't impervious to spills and could easily be damaged or stained by sharp objects. It is easy to take out the trays from the fridge, but be sure to keep them clean to avoid the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is an excellent counter-depth refrigerator that packs plenty of storage in an extremely compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge is built with an ordinary French door design, and two rows of spill-capture shelving and a set of crisper drawers. The top shelf to the right can be folded down to make space for taller items. There's also a full-width drawer to store food items and an internal water dispenser.

This refrigerator has a freezer with an ice maker, making it easy to transfer the frozen ice as needed. The freezer also has clever design features, such as sliding drawers that allow you to organize your items. It also has a large bin that can hold plenty of frozen food and a separate container for storing ice.

Another issue with the door of this refrigerator. The sunken handles allow shorter people to open them from the bottom. However, taller people still have a difficult time closing them without slamming. It would have been better if they had front-mounted handle.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a good option for those looking to combine the advantages of a French-door refrigerator's aesthetics with a more efficient layout. It has a capacity that is above average for counter-depth models and also cools evenly. It's also less expensive than the best counter depth refrigerator with an ice maker, which makes it a desirable choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a great choice for those looking for a French-door fridge that won't break the budget. It's a basic design that's not as striking in appearance as some of the competition, but it has enough features that make it a great option. Its most important feature, the adjustable temperature drawer helps to keep food items such as vegetables and meat fresher longer. It also comes with a huge water dispenser and a decent ice maker that operates quickly.

Another feature that is worth mentioning is the "Chill Drawer" that sits over the two crisper bins. This drawer lets you direct a portion of your fridge's cooling power to this area, so it can be used to store food items that require special attention. This feature can be adjusted by using a slider located outside the drawer. You can also set the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've found that the general settings are more effective than the specific ones.

During my tests, the temperature of the refrigerator stayed fairly consistent across different areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the fridge didn't differ much from 38 degrees. This is a great performance but doesn't quite make it to the top of our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be paired with a smart thermostat to get more accurate readings on the internal temperature of your fridge.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made of grey-bodied stainless with a "smudge proof" finish. It repels fingerprints and streaks better than other stainless steel finishes I've seen.
