Selenium may improve tolerance against Cd, which allowed MT plants exhibited less oxidative damage to the cell, even under elevated Cd accumulation in their tissues. The results suggest that Se application is an efficient management technique to alleviate the deleterious effects of Cd-stress, enhancing the nutritional value and activity of ROS-scavenging enzymes in tomato plants.Biocides of antifouling agents can cause problems in marine ecosystems by damaging to non-target algal species. Aquatic bioassays are important means of assessing the quality of water containing mixtures of contaminants and of providing a safety standard for water management in an ecological context. In this study, a rapid, sensitive and inexpensive test method was developed using free-living male and female gametophytes of the brown macroalga Undaria pinnatifida. A conventional fluorometer was employed to evaluate the acute (48 h) toxic effects of six antifouling biocides 4,5-Dichloro-2-octyl-isothiazolone (DCOIT), diuron, irgarol, medetomidine, tolylfluanid, zinc pyrithione (ZnPT). The decreasing toxicity in male and female gametophytes as estimated by EC50 (effective concentration at which 50% inhibition occurs) values was diuron (0.037 and 0.128 mg l-1, respectively) > irgarol (0.096 and 0.172 mg l-1, respectively) > tolylfluanid (0.238 and 1.028 mg l-1, respectively) > DCOIT (1.015 and 0.890 mg l-1, respectively) > medetomidine (12.032 and 12.763 mg l-1, respectively). For ZnPT, 50% fluorescence inhibition of U. pinnatifida gametophytes occurred at concentrations above 0.4 mg l-1. The Undaria method is rapid, simple, practical, and cost-effective for the detection of photosynthesis-inhibiting biocides, thus making a useful tool for testing the toxicity of antifouling agents in marine environments. In the early February, 2020, we called up an experts' committee with more than 30 Chinese experts from 11 national medical academic organizations to formulate the first edition of consensus statement on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in children, which has been published in this journal. With accumulated experiences in the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 in children, we have updated the consensus statement and released the second edition recently. The current version in English is a condensed version of the second edition of consensus statement on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of COVID-19 in children. In the current version, diagnosis and treatement criteria have been optimized, and early identification of severe and critical cases is highlighted. The early warning indicators for severe pediatric cases have been summarized which is utmost important for clinical practice. This version of experts consensus will be valuable for better prevention, diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 in children worldwide.Syphilis is a chronic sexually transmitted disease caused by infection with Treponema pallidum, which can invade various system organs, leading to clinical manifestations such as neurosyphilis, ocular syphilis, and cardiovascular syphilis and seriously endangering human health. Serofast status is a common outcome after syphilis treatment that presents an important clinical problem. At present, the etiology of serofast status remains unknown. A systematic investigation of the microRNA (miRNA) expression profiles in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with serofast status or secondary syphilis and of healthy control subjects was conducted using small RNA-seq. The expression of miRNAs was further confirmed by real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays. The data reveal a specific miRNA expression profile that was displayed in cells from patients with serofast status. Known and novel predicted (np)-miRNAs were also identified and verified, such as miR-338-5p, np-miR-163, np-miR-128, np-miR-244, and np-miR-5, which together may be used as indicators for treatment evaluation. The functions of genes targeted by the miRNAs differentially expressed in serofast status patients were further analyzed; these genes were found to be involved in various biological functions, such as T-cell receptor signaling pathways, metabolism, and growth. Our study presents the first systematic landscape of miRNAs in PBMCs from patients with serofast status and proposes specific miRNAs linked with serofast status. Our results provide further evidence that serofast status is closely related to host immune function. Additionally, the miRNA expression profile in PBMCs of patients with serofast status generated by this work offers insight into the complex immune network in humans. We hope our results can provide new insights into the pathogenesis of serofast status.Given that the PI3K/AKT pathway has manifested its compelling influence on multiple cellular process, we further review the roles of hyperactivation of PI3K/AKT pathway in various human cancers. We state the abnormalities of PI3K/AKT pathway in different cancers, which are closely related with tumorigenesis, proliferation, growth, apoptosis, invasion, metastasis, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, stem-like phenotype, immune microenvironment and drug resistance of cancer cells. In addition, we investigated the current clinical trials of inhibitors against PI3K/AKT pathway in cancers and found that the clinical efficacy of these inhibitors as monotherapy has so far been limited despite of the promising preclinical activity, which means combinations of targeted therapy may achieve better efficacies in cancers. In short, we hope to feature PI3K/AKT pathway in cancers to the clinic and bring the new promising to patients for targeted therapies.Bisphenol A (BPA), a monomer of polycarbonates and resins, was shown to induce the expression of telomerase enzyme which has been associated with breast cancer development and progression. However, the effects of BPA analogues, bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS) on telomere-linked pathway have not been evaluated. Herein, MCF-7 (estrogen receptor (ER)-positive) and MDA-MB-231 (ER-negative) cells were treated with BPA, BPF and BPS ± estrogen receptor inhibitor (ERI), for 24 and/or 48 h. RNA expression and enzymatic activity of telomerase were measured using reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP); respectively. Relative telomere length (RTL) was also measured using quantitative PCR. After 24 h, the three bisphenols resulted in a 2-3 folds increase in expression and activity of telomerase in MCF-7 but not in MDA-MB-231 cells, and this increase was prevented upon co-treatment with ERI. The observed increase in the expression and activity of telomerase after 24 h of treatment with bisphenols was associated with differential and modest ER-dependent lengthening in RTL at 48 h. Our results show that telomerase potentially mediates the effects of the three bisphenols in ER-positive breast carcinoma. Hence, further investigation is warranted to elucidate the telomerase-linked pathways that could underlie bisphenol-related effects.PURPOSE Although the post-bariatric clinical and physical changes are well-known, the psychosocial changes in patients' everyday life are less clear. Therefore, we tried to summarize comprehensively the currently available literature on the psychosocial changes of bariatric surgery (BS) by means of a scoping review. MATERIALS AND METHODS The scoping review was conducted following the Arksey and O'Malley framework, the Joanna Briggs Institute Reviewer's Manual 2015, and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist. PubMed, EMBASE, and PsycINFO were searched for data dating from January 2008 through October 2019. Only gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy procedures were considered for this review. To explore and describe the essence of the experienced changes deeply, only qualitative studies were included. The synthesis was performed using the qualitative content analysis technique. RESULTS The literature search yielded 1420 unique records, and 1371 articles were eliminated on the basis of irrelevant title and/or abstract. Forty-nine full-text articles were reviewed. Ultimately, eight articles were included in this scoping review. The qualitative content analysis emerged in 12 categories, which were further condensed into three major thematic areas, namely, "subjective self-image," "interpersonal relationships," and "it's not all gold that glitters," which reflect the post-operative psychosocial changes. CONCLUSION A wide range of psychosocial changes occurs following bariatric surgery. To maintain the improvements and to prevent negative changes, long-term support by specially trained health professionals is crucial. The informal settlements of the Global South are the least prepared for the pandemic of COVID-19 since basic needs such as water, toilets, sewers, drainage, waste collection, and secure and adequate housing are already in short supply or non-existent. Further, space constraints, violence, and overcrowding in slums make physical distancing and self-quarantine impractical, and the rapid spread of an infection highly likely. Residents of informal settlements are also economically vulnerable during any COVID-19 responses. Any responses to COVID-19 that do not recognize these realities will further jeopardize the survival of large segments of the urban population globally. Most top-down strategies to arrest an infectious disease will likely ignore the often-robust social groups and knowledge that already exist in many slums. Here, we offer a set of practice and policy suggestions that aim to (1) dampen the spread of COVID-19 based on the latest available science, (2) improve the likelihood of medical care for the pidemics such as Ebola. EUK 134 molecular weight They can be applied here. At the same time, the opportunity exists for public health, public administration, international aid, NGOs, and community groups to innovate beyond disaster response and move toward long-term plans.Despite concerted programmatic efforts iron deficiency anemia (IDA) continues to be a global health problem. Per Ayurveda, an Indian Traditional Medical System, natural plant materials such as pomegranate juice (PJ) is indicated as a food supplement to manage IDA. We hypothesized that pomegranate could play a role in improving absorption and assimilation of iron. A cell free in vitro model simulating the gastric and intestinal digestive processes coupled with cell based (Caco-2 and HepG2) models were used to assess iron (FeSO4 form) dialysability in the presence of PJ. Iron assimilation into cells was measured in terms of the cellular ferritin content. PJ (containing ~13 mg/100 ml natural ascorbic acid equivalent) increased the dialysability of iron by >3 fold when compared to control in the cell free model. An equivalent concentration of ascorbic acid alone increased it only by 1.6-fold. PJ increased the iron uptake in Caco2 cells by ~6-fold and ferritin content by 30% when compared to the ascorbic acid control. Similarly, PJ enhanced the iron uptake in HepG2 cells by ~3 fold and iron assimilation by about 50%. This study establishes a scientific evidence for Ayurveda's claim of using pomegranate in the management of IDA by facilitating iron absorption and assimilation. It provides a simple solution for addressing the global problem of IDA. Synergistic action of multiple phytochemicals, over and above ascorbic acid, in PJ may be responsible for improving iron bioavailability.
