Uterine fibroids are common findings in women with pelvic pain and abnormal uterine bleeding. The reference standard test in the pretreatment evaluation of fibroids is contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. This study compared the number, size, location, and enhancement of uterine fibroids identified by contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and MR. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that CEUS performs similarly to MR and could be used as an alternative imaging modality.

In this prospective observational study, 26 women underwent transabdominal CEUS and MR examinations. Blinded to the original clinical MR interpretations, 2 readers reviewed the MR and CEUS studies for each patient. The number, size, location, and enhancement of each fibroid per patient were reported by MR and CEUS. A Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated for the number of fibroids identified by each modality.

In total, 126 fibroids were imaged 115 (91.3%) were observed on both examinations; 9 (7.1%) were observed by MR only; and 2 (1.6%) were observed by CEUS only. A high correlation was found between the modalities for the number of fibroids identified per patient (r = 0.97; P < .001). There was also no significant difference between the modalities for each patient in the fibroid number, size, location, or enhancement.

These findings suggest that transabdominal CEUS may represent an alternative to MR in pretreatment evaluation of uterine fibroids and could serve as a test of choice in patients with a contraindication to MR.

For our study, data of 196 cases children and adolescents with NPC from the past 18 years at a high-volume cancer center from South China were retrospectively analyzed. Half of the evaluated NPC patients (83/166, 50.0%) were staged as Stage IVa disease, whereas 1.2% (2/166), 27.7% (46/166), 16.9% (28/166) and 4.2% (7/166) had Stage II, III, IVb and IVc disease, respectively. Serum EBV EA-IgA ≥110 and VCA-IgA ≥140 were found in 67.7% (113/167) and 76.6% (128/167) of the evaluated patients, respectively, whereas 56.8% (84/148) of the patients had plasma EBV DNA ≥1000 copies/mL. Histologically, all tumors were classified as nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (NK-SCC). Immunohistochemistrically, the expression of CK (AE1/AE3), P63, CK5/6 and P40 were observed in 100% (88/88), 93.2% (68/73), 84.1% (58/69) and 63.2% (12/19) of the detected cases, respectively. All cases show similar immunophenotype compared to that occurring in adult patients. All evaluated cases (71/71 100%) harbored EBER. The effects of compounds 3e and 3g on SIRT1 activity were determined. To report anconeus muscle injury in a greyhound.

Case report METHODS The dog presented with a 6-week history of mild left foreleg lameness. Moderate pain was noted by palpation over the proximolateral ulna and distolateral humerus and by maximal elbow flexion. A laminar periosteal reaction on the caudodistal humerus was present on radiographs. At ultrasonic examination, disorganization of anconeus muscle fibers, and focal mixed echogenicity were noted. Precontrast and postcontrast computed tomography (CT) revealed a thin rim of periosteal new bone on the caudodistal humerus as well as heterogeneous contrast enhancement of soft tissue immediately caudal to the distal humerus. An unrelated greyhound cadaver dissection confirmed only the anconeus muscle attached to the site of noted periosteal reaction. A partial tear of the anconeus muscle was diagnosed. Treatment consisted of 4 weeks of oral meloxicam. Confinement space and exercise were incrementally increased over 14 weeks.

Muscle healing was confirmed by ultrasonography and CT. The dog was able to have a successful racing career spanning 2 years with no lameness attributable to the previous anconeus muscle injury and retired for unrelated reasons.

Radiography and ultrasonography helped diagnose anconeal muscle injury, and conservative management led to full return to function.

This study aimed to demonstrate the potent anti-microbial property of a 19 amino acid (AA) long N-terminal fragment of hok peptide. This was accomplished by designing a conditional suicide system based on hok gene expression cloned in an anhydrotetracycline (aTc) inducible vector - pASK75. Heat shock and electroporation were utilized for the transformation of Escherichia coli and Vibrio cholerae cells, respectively. The minimal induction concentration (MId C) of aTc, determined by analyzing the expression of green fluorescent protein cloned separately into pASK75 vector, was 30 ng/mL. As hok gene was synthesized de novo (using recombinant polymerase chain reaction) in our study, various random sized hok fragments were generated (as a result of the error-prone nature of Taq polymerase). The smallest hok fragment able to bring about effective antimicrobial killing was a 19 AA long N-terminal fragment of hok having the wild type sequence, except for the carboxy terminus AA residue. The MId C of aTc in our experiments was 6-fold lower than previously reported, making our bacterial clones suitable for use in mammalian systems as potential vaccine candidates. Based on our experiments, we hypothesize the 19 AA long N-terminal fragment of hok peptide to be the smallest possible hok fragment sufficient to bring about effective antimicrobial killing.
Systematic screening can improve detection of delirium, but lack of time is often cited as why such screening is not performed. We investigated the time required to implement four screening protocols that use the Ultra-Brief two-item screener for delirium (UB-2) and the 3-Minute Diagnostic Interview for Confusion Assessment Method (CAM)-defined Delirium (3D-CAM), with and without a skip pattern that can further shorten the assessment.
