Questionnaires then assessed autistic traits, alexithymia (difficulties processing one's own emotions), and emotion recognition. In the overall sample, no correlations were found between cardiac ANS, IA, autistic traits, and aspects of emotion processing, but when examining individuals high and low on autistic traits separately, distinct associations were found. Within the group of participants with elevated autistic traits, greater baseline respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) was predictive of lower levels of alexithymia and autistic traits, as well as higher IA, but these associations were not seen in participants low on autistic traits. These findings suggest that variability in autistic traits in a non-autistic sample can lead to differential relations between cardiac autonomic responses, awareness of one's cardiac responses, and emotion processing. A multidisciplinary team at the Washington University School of Medicine, Barnes Jewish Hospital, and BJC Healthcare was formed to implement a program to disinfect N95 respirators. The process described extends the life of N95 respirators using vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) disinfection and allows healthcare workers to retain their own N95 respirator across a large metropolitan health care system. While elderly patients are at high risk of fatality, research concerning COVID-19 has largely been done on clarifying the clinical features. As such, the present work aims to identify risk factors for mortality in elderly patients with COVID-19. Given that single-centre studies are less likely informative as elderly remains a minority in the total Chinese population, the present study reviewed the clinical data of geriatric COVID-19 patients gathered from different sources in the public domain. Based on the data of 154 individuals from 26 provinces, age remained a key mortality risk factor among geriatric patients of different ages. While dyspnoea and chest pain/discomfort were more commonly seen in deceased patients as they represented severe pneumonia, fever was more prominent in surviving patients. This was likely due to the lower baseline body temperature observed in elderly which translated to a lower maximum temperature of fever. However, lowering the threshold temperature for fever is not recommended in surveillance. Instead, baseline body temperature measured on a regular basis should be used to define the threshold temperature for fever. Against mixed results, more research should be done on identifying comorbidities associated with mortality in geriatric patients. OBJECTIVE To investigate the role of baseline gonadotropins in predicting the biochemical response to clomiphene citrate (CC) treatment. METHODS We conducted a retrospective review of data from hypogonadal men treated with CC in two high-volume fertility centers between 2013 and 2018. Patient age, body mass index (BMI), and baseline hormones (follicle stimulating hormone [FSH], luteinizing hormone [LH], and total testosterone [TT]) were obtained. Response to treatment was measured as changes in TT levels within six months of initiating CC treatment. Linear regression models adjusted for age, BMI, and time on CC therapy were fitted to assess the associations between baseline LH and FSH levels with treatment response. RESULTS A total of 332 men with mean ± standard deviation age of 36.2±8.2 years were included. Median time to initial follow-up was 6 weeks (25th-75th interquartile range [IQR] 4-9 weeks). TT levels increased significantly on CC treatment (mean change 329.2 ng/dL, 95% CI 307.4 to 351.0) with 73% of men having at least 200 ng/dL increase over baseline TT levels. In univariable linear regression models, only age was significantly associated with TT response. Neither the baseline LH nor FSH significantly predicted TT response in linear regression models. CONCLUSION CC treatment results in significant increases in testosterone levels in most men. Baseline gonadotropins are not strong predictors for treatment response to CC. Adequate biochemical response with CC trial can be expected in most patients with normal or slightly elevated baseline gonadotropin levels. OBJECTIVES To observe glymphatic transport and evaluate enlarged perivascular spaces (PVSs) in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). METHODS SHRs were used as an animal model of cerebral small vessel disease, and Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats were used as the control group. Histopathology was used to evaluate the enlargement of PVSs. A fluorescent tracer was infused into the cisterna magna of rats, and the proportion of the brain parenchyma area exposed to the fluorescent tracer was later quantified to evaluate the influx and efflux function of the glymphatic system. The global and polarized expression of aquaporin protein 4 (AQP4) was analyzed by immunofluorescence. RESULTS Compared with WKY rats, SHRs exhibited obviously enlarged PVSs and significantly decreased influx and efflux function of the glymphatic system. The results showed a significant decrease in AQP4 polarity in SHRs, but a difference in global AQP4 expression was not observed between SHRs and WKY rats. CONCLUSIONS Impaired glymphatic transport may be involved in the pathogenesis of arteriolosclerotic cerebral small vessel disease, and enlarged PVSs may be a manifestation of the impaired glymphatic system.
