Research capacity building enhances the abilities of individuals and is critical within health systems for quality patient care and promotes a culture of excellence within the occupational therapy profession. A research capacity building toolkit was proposed identifying strategies to support allied health professionals to undertake research. However, it is not clear whether learning a new meaning also affects the previously learned meaning and whether this effect is modulated by the semantic similarity between them. The current study aimed to explore this issue using event-related potential technique. A word learning task was used, in which Chinese-English bilinguals were required to learn a new meaning that was semantically related or unrelated to the previously learned meaning of familiar L2 words and judge the semantic relatedness between the trained word and a probe word in the same trial. The results showed that both the N400 and late-positive component (LPC) amplitudes for probe words in the unrelated new meaning condition were significantly different from the unlearned condition, which suggests learning new meaning interferes with accessing the previously learned meaning. Moreover, significantly less positive LPC was found in the unrelated new meaning condition relative to the related new meaning condition, showing a mediation of semantic similarity in the perturbation effect. We conclude that learning L2 new meaning has a backward interference effect on accessing the previously learned meaning and this effect is modulated by semantic similarity. These findings provide supporting evidence for the interaction mechanism of learning the multiple meanings of L2 ambiguous words.
Reduced hospital admission rates for heart failure (HF) and evidence of increased in-hospital mortality were reported during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to apply a machine learning (ML)-based mortality prediction model to examine whether the latter is attributable to differing case mixes and exceeds expected mortality rates.

Inpatient cases with a primary discharge diagnosis of HF non-electively admitted to 86 German Helios hospitals between 01/01/2016 and 08/31/2020 were identified. Patients with proven or suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection were excluded. ML-based models were developed, tuned, and tested using cases of 2016-2018 (n = 64,440; randomly split 75%/25%). Extreme gradient boosting showed the best model performance indicated by a receiver operating characteristic area under the curve of 0.882 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.872-0.893). The model was applied on data sets of 2019 and 2020 (n = 28,556 cases) and the hospital standardized mortality ratio (HSMR) was computed as the observed to expected death ratio. Observed mortality rates were 5.84% (2019) and 6.21% (2020), HSMRs based on an individual case-based mortality probability were 100.0 (95% CI 93.3-107.2; p = 1.000) for 2019 and 99.3 (95% CI 92.5-106.4; p = .850) for 2020. Within subgroups of age or hospital volume, there were no significant differences between observed and expected deaths. When stratified for pandemic phases, no excess death during the COVID-19 pandemic was observed.

The objective of this study was to examine whether exposure to high ambient temperatures during infancy is associated with rapid infant weight gain in Israel.

This is a population-based historical cohort study using data from the Israeli national public network of maternal and child health clinics between 2008 and 2013. We assessed exposure to ambient temperature in the first year of life using a high-resolution hybrid spatio-temporal model and calculated annual mean and minimum temperatures for each infant based on daily mean and minimum temperatures at the community clinic location. We defined rapid infant weight gain as a World Health Organization weight z-score differed with rapid infant weight gain in Israel. A prospective MIP cohort study was conducted in chest disease hospitals in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. In the present prospective, randomized clinical study, critically severe COVID-19 patients were divided into two groups, the MIP group (n = 105) and the best standard treatment (BST) group (n = 210). Procalcitonin, ferritin, high-sensitive C-reactive protein, D-dimer levels, and interleukin levels on 5th-day posttreatment were significantly reduced in the MIP group compared to the BST group. Compared to the BST group, 105 consecutive patients with severe COVID-19 in the MIP group reported early weaning off ventilation, resolution of chest architecture (computed tomography [CT] scan), a significant increase in SpO2 levels, and decreased mortality with a hazard ratio 0.234 (95% confidence interval 0.264-2.31) (p = 0.001). MIP restored SpO2 , immune/inflammatory response, normalized lung abnormalities (chest CT scan), and reduced mortality without any serious complications.
