The increasing amount of electric vehicles on our streets as well as the need to store surplus energy from renewable sources such as wind, solar and tidal parks, has brought small and large scale batteries into the focus of academic and industrial research. While there has been huge progress in performance and cost reduction in the past years, batteries and their components still face several environmental issues including safety, toxicity, recycling and sustainability. In this review, we address these challenges by showcasing the potential of polysaccharide-based compounds and materials used in batteries. This particularly involves their use as electrode binders, separators and gel/solid polymer electrolytes. The review contains a historical section on the different battery technologies, considerations about safety on batteries and requirements of polysaccharide components to be used in different types of battery technologies. The last sections cover opportunities for polysaccharides as well as obstacles that prevent their wider use in battery industry.Hemorrhage remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality following trauma and during complex surgeries. A variety of nanomaterials, including oxidized cellulose nanofibers (OCNFs), have been studied to overcome the disadvantages of current commercial topical hemostats. However, the relationship between nano-structural characteristics and hemostatic efficacy of non-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) has not been elucidated. Herein, we present the first report of the correlation between structure and hemostatic performance of CNFs. In vitro thromboelastometry studies on CNFs, synthesized by ball-milling, showed that there is an optimum balance point between the aspect ratio (AR) and specific surface area (SSA) of nanofibers in terms of their maximum contribution to platelet function and plasma coagulation. The optimized CNFs with high SSA (17 m2/g) and a high AR (166) shortened normal whole blood clotting time by 68 %, outperforming cellulose-based hemostats. Additionally, CNFs reduced clotting time in platelet-deficient blood (by 80 %) and heparinized blood (by 54 %).Aloe polysaccharides (APs) are indigestible bioactive polysaccharides, while can be fermented by colonic microbiota. Although plant polysaccharides can alleviate subacute ulcerative colitis (SUC), the mechanisms APs regulated SUC via colonic microbiota have not been fully explored. Hence, to elucidate the complex interactions between the novel APs, colonic microbiota, SCFAs, and inflammation, the SUC mouse model and in-depth analysis were performed, including multiple bioinformatics analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM). After APs intervention, SCFAs and SCFAs-producing genus, including Akkermansia and Blautia, were increased in colon, and the colonic inflammation and barrier dysfunction were alleviated significantly in SUC mice. Spearman analysis found positive correlations between microbiota and SCFAs. PICRUSt2 and KEGG analysis revealed 6-pyruvoyltetra hydropterin synthase in folate biosynthesis metabolism pathway was activated, while phosphotransferase system was inhibited. SEM results further proved APs was beneficial to gut micro-ecological balance in mice via SCFAs metabolism and anti-inflammatory functions. Together, APs could be exploited to alleviate SUC as dietary therapeutics.Electron beam irradiation (EBI) is an alternative treatment for intrinsic viscosity (IV) control in cellulose pulps, but has never been integrated in full bleaching sequences for comparison to conventional methods. Both eucalyptus kraft (EK) paper pulp and beech sulfite (BS) dissolving pulp were subjected to totally chlorine free (TCF) bleaching sequences comprising either EBI, ozone, or both for IV control. Additionally, effects of EBI on hexenuronic acid (HexA) and xylan were investigated. IV was adjusted to 450-500 mL g-1 and properties including carbonyl content, kappa, brightness, alkali-resistance and sugar composition were compared. Pulps produced with EBI had a higher alkali-resistance, uniformity and less cellulose oxidation. However, the degree of bleaching (DoB) was low without the use of ozone. HexA content in a birch pulp was halved by EBI. Isolated xylans were more resistant to irradiation than cellulose with little decrease of molar masses and moderate oxidation. The challenges related to the persistence of plastics in natural ecosystems fostered strong interest in developing biodegradable bioplastics. Among natural biopolymers, starch gained both academic and industrial interest owing to its impressive physicochemical properties. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/liraglutide.html The use of starch in production of polyurethane (PU) composites not only yields PUs with outstanding mechanical properties but also makes the final PU products biodegradable. The hydrophilic nature of starch limits its dispersion in hydrophobic PU polymers, although it is a significant benefit in creating starch-embedded non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) composites. We present a comprehensive overview to highlight important strategies that are used to improve the compatibility of starch with various PU matrices. This review also gives an overview of the recent advances in the synthesis of starch-NIPU hybrids. Moreover, we aim to deliver critical insight into strategies that boost the biodegradation characteristics of PUs along with a discussion on various methods to assess their biodegradation. In this study, magnetic core/chitosan shell Nanoparticles (NPs) containing cisplatin were synthesized via cisplatin complexation with tripolyphosphate as the chitosan crosslinker using two different procedures a conventional batch flow method and a microfluidic approach. An integrated microfluidic device composed of three stages was developed to provide precise and highly controllable mixing. The comparison of the results revealed that NPs synthesized in microchannels were monodisperse 104 ± 14.59 nm (n = 3) in size with optimal morphological characteristics, whereas polydisperse 423 ± 53.33 nm (n = 3) nanoparticles were obtained by the conventional method. Furthermore, cisplatin was loaded in NPs without becoming inactivated, and the microfluidic technique demonstrated higher encapsulation efficiency, controlled release, and consequently lower IC50 values during exposure to the A2780 cell line proving that microfluidic synthesized NPs were able to enter the cells and release the drug more efficiently. The developed microfluidic platform presents valuable features that could potentially provide the clinical translation of NPs in drug delivery.
