BiOCl powders with different morphology were obtained through self-assembling. Their photocatalytic performance was tested through degradation of organic dye and mechanism of photocatalytic for obtained samples were investigated. Relevant characterization demonstrated that facet synergy was a main reason of photocatalytic performance promotion due to changed facet exposure and proportion under self-assembling. Theory and experimental analysis manifested that synergistic facet stimulated Z scheme transition in samples with lower (001) facet proportion, which provided favorable condition of 1O2 generation and simultaneously generated prominent charge separation. This work unveiled the facet synergy dominant photocatalytic performance improvement in self-assembling system of BiOCl and verified decisive role of facet proportion in constructing Z-scheme facet junction, which also prompted possibility of improving 1O2 generation through facet engineering under self-assembling.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) exposure and obesity-related outcomes in the general adult population using the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
This cross-sectional study examined the data from the NHANES from 2007 to 2016 and totally evaluated 8,770 individuals. DEET's primary oxidative metabolite, 3-(diethylcarbamoyl) benzoic acid (DCBA), is a sensitive and specific indicator of DEET exposure. DCBA was divided into three groups based on the interquartile range. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) were used to define obesity and abdominal obesity, respectively. The association among DCBA and obesity-related outcomes was evaluated using a multivariable linear and logistic regression model.
Overall, median age of participants was 46.0 (IQR 31.0, 59.0) years, with 4295 (49.2%) men, while median BMI and WC were 27.8 (24.0, 32.0) and 29.6 (86.6, 108.1) kg/m
, respectively. Approximately e findings suggested that higher DCBA concentrations are positively associated with the prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity in the general adult population.Porewater is the primary carrier of sediment nitrogen and a crucial source of overlying water nitrogen; its separation thus is essential for restraining nitrogen release from sediment to overlying water. We developed a novel device using electrokinetic geosynthetics to drain porewater with nitrogen and restrain nitrogen release. A batch experiment lasted 1120 h (about 47 days) was conducted with 20 cm depth of overlying water under three conditions, i.e., undrained at 0 V/cm voltage gradient (control), drained at 0 V/cm, and drained at 0.5 V/cm. Under the pulsed direct current, once porewater drained, overlying water replenished sediment pore space and supplied porewater. Along with porewater drainage, sediment nitrogen concentration was reduced by 11%-30%, decreasing nitrogen release from sediment to overlying water from 83 mg/m2 in the first 100 h to -95 mg/m2 after about 600 h. Processes such as electroosmosis, electromigration, and redox reaction contributed to the restraint on nitrogen release. This research revealed the potentiality of applying electrokinetic geosynthetics to in-situ restraint on sediment nitrogen release in eutrophic waterbodies such as fishponds. This paper reports the application of NH2-MIL-125(Ti) modified carbon nitride Cv-C3N4 with carbon vacancies in the removal of NO. We performed a series of characterizations of the complex and compared various ratios with the individual components. The results of UV spectrum analysis show that the composite's range of light absorption expanded due to the modification of Ti metal-organic framework. Furthermore, the results of photocurrent and electrical impedance indicate the compound has a better ability to generate and transfer electrons. The increase in the compound's NO removal efficiency (up to 63%) indicates that MOF has a positive effect on Cv-C3N4 modification-a good method for photocatalysis. Moreover, the compound can promote photocatalysis in a favorable direction.Although the toxicity of triclosan (TCS) and galaxolide (HHCB) in freshwater has been reported, little study is shed light on their molecular toxicity mechanism and the regulation of humic acid (HA). In this work, freshwater algae E. gracilis was selected to explore these processes, and the molecular toxicity mechanism was analyzed by metabolomics. TCS was more toxic to E. gracilis than HHCB at 1 d exposure with the EC50 value of 0.76 mg L-1, but HHCB showed a higher toxicity as the exposure time prolonged. HA could alleviate the toxicity of TCS and HHCB, mainly due to the inhibition of TCS uptake and oxidative stress, respectively. RXC004 The perturbations on a number of antioxidant defense-related metabolites in response to TCS or HHCB also indicated oxidative stress was a main toxicity mechanism. However, the exposure to HHCB resulted in more pronounced perturbations in the purine metabolism than TCS, implying that HHCB may pose a genetic toxicity on algae. It may explain the higher toxicity of HHCB to algae as the exposure time increased. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding on the ecological risks of TCS or HHCB in natural waters.A broad range of contaminants has been recorded in sediments of the Loire River over the last century. Among a variety of anthropogenic activities of this nuclearized watershed, extraction of uranium and associated activities during more than 50 years as well as operation of several nuclear power plants led to industrial discharges, which could persist for decades in sedimentary archives of the Loire River. Highlighting and identifying the origin of radionuclides that transited during the last decades and were recorded in the sediments is challenging due to i) the low concentrations which are often close or below the detection limits of routine environmental surveys and ii) the mixing of different sources. The determination of the sources of anthropogenic radioactivity was performed using multi-isotopic fingerprints (236U/238U, 206Pb/207Pb and 208Pb/207Pb) and the newly developed 233U/236U tracer. For the first time 233U/236U data in a well-dated river sediment core in the French river Loire are reported here. Results highlight potential sources of contamination among which a clear signature of anthropogenic inputs related to two accidents of a former NUGG NPP that occurred in 1969 and 1980. The 233U and 236U isotopes were measured by recent high performance analytical methods due to their ultra-trace levels in the samples and show a negligible radiological impact on health and on the environment. The determination of mining activities by the use of stable Pb isotopes is still challenging probably owing to the limited dissemination of the Pb-bearing material marked by the U-ore signature downstream to the former U mines.Encephalopathy associated with hemolytic uremic syndrome is produced by enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) infection, which releases the virulence factors Shiga toxin (Stx) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Neurological compromise is a poor prognosis and mortality factor of the disease, and the thalamus is one of the brain areas most frequently affected. We have previously demonstrated the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory drugs to ameliorate the deleterious effects of these toxins. However, the thalamic production of cytokines involved in pro-inflammatory processes has not yet been acknowledged. The aim of this work attempts to determine whether systemic sublethal Stx2a or co-administration of Stx2a with LPS are able to rise a proinflammatory profile accompanying alterations of the neurovascular unit in anterior and lateral ventral nuclei of the thalamus (VA-VL) and motor behavior in mice. After 4 days of treatment, Stx2a affected the lectin-bound microvasculature distribution while increasing the expression of GFAP in reactive astrocytes and producing aberrant NeuN distribution in degenerative neurons. In addition, increased swimming latency was observed in a motor behavioral test. All these alterations were heightened when Stx2a was co-administered with LPS. The expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNFα, INF-γ and IL-2 was detected in VA-VL. All these effects were concomitant with increased expression of the Stx receptor globotriaosylceramide (Gb3), which hints at receptor involvement in the neuroinflammatory process as a key finding of this study. In conclusion, Stx2a to Gb3 may be determinant in triggering a neuroinflammatory event, which may resemble clinical outcomes and should thus be considered in the development of preventive strategies. One undescribed diterpenoid illisimonone A, four undescribed sesquiterpenes named (±)-simonones A, simonterpenoids A and B, and two undescribed lignans, illisimonins A and B, along with five known compounds were isolated from the fruits of Illicium simonsii. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic data. The absolute configuration of illisimonone A was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Illisimonone A showed potential antiviral activity against the Coxsackie B3 virus, with an IC50 value of 3.70 μM. Illisimonin B and henrylactone A showed potential neuroprotective effects against oxygen-glucose deprivation induced cell injury in SK-N-SH cells, with survival rates of 57.6%, 58.0%, respectively.Racial ingroup favoritism in empathic brain activity has been widely observed and is associated with biased behavior toward same-race and other-race individuals. We investigated whether racial outgroup favoritism in neural responses to others' pain - an objective measure of empathy - may emerge during sociocultural interactions in a new social environment. We recorded magnetoencephalography to pain and neutral expressions of Asian and White faces from White students who had stayed in China for 6-36 weeks (Experimental group) or 2-4 weeks (Control group). The experimental group showed better neural decoding of and greater insular/sensorimotor responses to pain vs. neutral expressions of Asian compared to White faces. By contrast, the control group showed better neural decoding of pain vs. neutral expressions of White than Asian faces. In addition, participants of the experimental group who had stayed longer in China showed greater sensorimotor responses to pain (vs. neutral) expressions of Asian faces but weaker sensorimotor responses to pain (vs. neutral) expressions of White faces. Our findings revealed emerging racial outgroup favoritism in brain activities associated with sensorimotor resonance and affective sharing of others' pain during sociocultural interactions.Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) plays crucial roles in the growth and development of several tissues. However, its function in bone homeostasis remains controversial. Here, we found that exogenous FGF2 supplementation inhibited the mineralization of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs), at least partially, via up-regulating the gene expression of osteoclastogenesis. The FGF receptor (FGFR) allosteric antagonist SSR128129E modestly, whereas the FGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor AZD4547 significantly antagonized the effects of FGF2. Mechanistically, FGF2 stimulated ERK phosphorylation, and the ERK signaling inhibitor PD325901 strongly blocked FGF2 enhancement of osteoclastogenesis. Moreover, the phosphorylation of CREB was also activated in response to FGF2, thereby potentiating the interaction of p-CREB with the promoter region of Rankl gene. Notably, FGF2-deficient BMSCs exhibited higher mineralization capability and lower osteoclastogenic gene expression. Correspondingly, FGF2-knockout mice showed increased bone mass and attenuated expression of osteoclast-related markers, which were associated with moderate inhibition of the ERK signaling.
