In this study, the developmental vascular toxicity of BPA and three predominant substitutes (BPF, BPS and BPAF) were evaluated using zebrafish embryos and human vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs). BP exposure at a sublethal concentration of 1/10 96 h median lethal concentration (96 h-LC50) significantly hindered intersegmental vessel (ISV) growth, delayed common cardinal vein (CCV) remodeling and decreased subintestinal vessels (SIVs) in Tg (fli1EGFP) zebrafish embryos. Meanwhile, the results of the endothelial tube formation assay showed that in vitro angiogenesis was inhibited by BP exposure. Mechanistically, BP exposure increased oxidative stress characterized by a significant decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity, accompanied by increased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in both zebrafish and HUVECs. Therefore, the vascular toxicity and oxidative stress potency of the BPs were compared and evaluated, ranking as follows BPAF > BPF > BPA > BPS. To the best of our knowledge, the present work, for the first time, systematically provides direct evidence for BPA and its alternatives on developmental vascular toxicity in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, these findings will provide insight into the rational and safe application of BPA substitutes.Biochar can significantly enhance soil organic carbon (SOC) and crop yield, and it is therefore the preferred material for soil improvement in medium-low yield fields. In this study, a field experiment was designed to explore the impacts of biochar application on SOC content and fraction composition. Results indicated that incorporation of biochar into soil increased the SOC content by 26.9%-65.3% in the surface layer (0-10 cm) and 30.3%-63.0% in the subsurface layer (10-20 cm) of soil, while water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) of the two layers was increased by 2.2-40.0% and 2.3-39.8%, respectively. Microbial biomass carbon decreased under conventional nitrogen treatments and increased with biochar addition under increased nitrogen application. The CN value increased with biochar application, while the water-soluble CN value of soil applied with 30 t ha-1 biochar was lower than that of soil applied with 15 t ha-1 biochar, both in the two tested soil layers. Wheat yield is evidently correlated with SOC, with the correlation coefficients of 0.919 and 0.952 in the surface and subsurface soil layers (P less then 0.01), respectively. Particularly, increasing fulvic and humic acid-like compounds of WSOC promoted the bioavailability of nutrient elements, thereby increasing the crop yields. Therefore, biochar application is an effective means to fertilize middle-low yield soils through increasing SOC sequestration and nutrient reserves, or adjusting soil CN value to a proper range, thereby reducing nutrient loss and increasing wheat yield.Lead (Pb) is one of the toxic heavy metals that pollute the environment as a result of industrial activities. This study aims to optimize Pb removal from water by using horizontal free surface flow constructed wetland (HFSFCW) planted with Scirpus grossus. Optimization was conducted using response surface methodology (RSM) under Box-Behnken design with the operational parameters of initial Pb concentration, retention time, and aeration. Optimization results showed that 37 mg/L of initial Pb concentration, 32 days of retention time, and no aeration were the optimum conditions for Pb removal by using the systems. Validation test was run under two different conditions, namely, non-bioaugmented and bioaugmented with rhizobacteria (Bacillus cereus, B. pumilus, B. subtilis, Brevibacillus choshinensis, and Rhodococcus rhodochrous). Results of the validation test showed that Pb removal in water achieved 99.99% efficiency with 0.2% error from the RSM prediction, while the adsorption of Pb by plants reached 5160.18 mg/kg with 10.6% error from the RSM prediction. The bioaugmentation of the five rhizobacterial species showed a slight improvement in Pb removal from water and Pb adsorption by plants. However, no significant improvement was achieved (p less then 0.05). Overall results suggested that operating the HFSFCW under optimum conditions with no bioaugmentation might be a feasible choice for the treatment of Pb-contaminated water.Eco-toxicological assays with species of economic interest such as Diacronema lutheri are essential for industries that produce aquaculture feed, natural food additives and also in drug developing industries. Our study involved the exposure of a single and combined toxicity of arsenic (As V) to D. lutheri for the entire algal growth phase and highlighted that a combined exposure of As V with other essential (Copper, Cu; Nickel, Ni) and non-essential (Cadmium, Cd; Lead, Pb) trace metals reduced significantly the cell number, chlorophyll a content, and also significantly increased the de-epoxidation ratio (DR) as a stress response when compared to the single toxicity of As V. link2 Arsenic, as one of the ubiquitous trace metal and an active industrial effluent is reported to have an increased bio-concentration factor when in mixture with other trace metals in this study. In the combined exposure, the concentration of total As bio-accumulated by D. lutheri was higher than in the single exposure. Our study highlights the consequences and the response of D. lutheri in terms of contamination from single and multiple trace metals in order to obtain a safer biomass production for the growing need of natural derivatives.Water pollution by organic dyes poses great challenge to the environment and living organism. Hence effective removal of organic dyes by cost effective methods have received significant attention in recent years. Herein, we report the complete removal of organic dyes (rhodamine B), methylene blue) and eosin yellow) from water via effective adsorption by MoO3 catalyst. Hydrothermally synthesised MoO2 (1) and amorphous MoSx (2) using ammonium molybdate without and with thiourea exhibited low dye adsorption. In contrast, crystalline micro/nanoplates of MoO3 (3 and 4) obtained from calcination of 1 and 2 showed highly enhanced dye adsorption. Particularly 4 showed higher dye adsorption compared to 3. UV-Visible absorption studies confirmed complete removal of organic dyes upon stirring with MoO3 catalyst. Dye removal studies further revealed that cationic dyes are adsorbed faster than anionic dye that could be attributed to the surface charge of MoO3. Interestingly, the adsorbed dyes were not released from MoO3 for more than 50 days. The exhausted MoO3 catalyst can be recovered by annealing at 400 °C. MoO3 catalyst has also been used as packing materials in dropper column and demonstrated effective removal of dyes by passing through dyes separately as well as mixture.Microalgae is an autotrophic organism with fast growth, short reproduction cycle, and strong environmental adaptability. Our purpose in the research was to clarify the impact of medication adherence to oral hypoglycemic agents during a 1-year period and subsequent glycemic control on the risk of micro- and macrovascular diseases.

Examined was a nationwide claims database on 13,256 individuals with diabetic eye disease without requiring prior treatment, 7,862 without prior initiation of dialysis, 15,556 without prior coronary artery disease, 16,243 without prior cerebrovascular disease, and 19,386 without prior heart failure from 2008 to 2016 in Japan. Medication adherence was evaluated by the proportion of days covered. Patients were considered to have poor adherence if the proportion of days covered was <80%. Multivariate Cox regression model identified risks of micro- and macrovascular diseases.

In each group, mean age was 53 to 54 years, HbA1c was 7.1% to 7.2%, and median follow-up period was 4.6 to 5.1 years, and the percentage of poor adherence was approximately 30%. During the study period, 532 treatment-requiring diabetic eye disease, 75 dialysis, 389 coronary artery disease, 316 cerebrovascular disease, and 144 heart failure events occurred. Multivariate Cox regression model revealed that the hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of dialysis in the poor adherence group was 2.04 (1.27-3.30) compared with the good adherence group. The hazard ratios in the poor adherence/poor glycemic control group were 3.34 (2.63-4.24) for treatment-requiring diabetic eye disease, 4.23 (2.17-8.26) for dialysis, 1.69 (1.23-2.31) for coronary artery disease, and 2.08 (1.25-3.48) for heart failure compared with the good adherence/good glycemic control group.

The purpose of this study was to investigate first trimester anticoagulant exposure and risks of adverse pregnancy-related and fetal outcomes.

Using Danish nationwide registries, we identified all pregnant women with preconception venous thromboembolism, 2000-2017, and linked data on exposure to low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH), vitamin K antagonist (VKA), or non-VKA oral anticoagulant (NOAC) during pregnancy. We assessed pregnancy-related and fetal outcomes associated with first trimester anticoagulant exposure.

Among 4490 pregnancies in women with preconception venous thromboembolism (mean age 31 years, 40% nulliparous), during the first trimester, 63.1% were unexposed, 25.9% were exposed to LMWH, 10.4% VKA, and 0.6% NOAC. Adverse outcomes were lowest in unexposed and LMWH-exposed.
