88 (11.19-38.95, 95% CI). For cannabis users only, the hazard ratio (HR) for drug use disorders at 16-year follow-up was 0.89 (0.31-2.61, 95%CI). For cannabis and other illicit drug users, the corresponding HR was 7.27 (3.85-13.75, 95% CI). CONCLUSIONS There was no independent association between cannabis use and subsequent drug use disorders. The association with subsequent drug use disorders was rather explained by other illicit drug use, which cannabis users were at higher risk of at the three-year follow-up. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify healthcare providers' experiences of the gaps in the healthcare system, barriers to obtaining care, and facilitators that promoted safe, quality care for family caregivers of children with respiratory diseases. DESIGN AND METHODS A qualitative, descriptive design was used with 13 pediatric healthcare providers. FINDINGS Gaps included themes of 1) fragmented healthcare system and 2) lack of asthma management knowledge. Barriers included themes of 1) poor access to healthcare and medications, 2) non-adherence, and 3) linguistic diversity and poor health literacy. Facilitators of optimal respiratory management included themes of 1) education, 2) improved communication, and 3) peer support. CONCLUSIONS Through better understanding the gaps, barriers, and facilitators, pediatric nurses will be able to more effectively anticipate and address the needs of the caregivers. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The nurse is in a pivotal role to empower caregivers with the skills and resources to address challenges and connect them with providers for optimal respiratory management. Numerous studies have shown that post-learning sleep enhances visual episodic recognition memory. However, it remains unclear whether this consolidation benefit is moderated by the emotional valence of the learned material. To clarify whether sleep selectively enhances memory for emotional material, we conducted a meta-analysis including N = 1059 post-sleep/wake observations. Overall, our results do not support this hypothesis. When only studies with a sleep group/wake group comparison were included in the analysis (k = 22), the retention advantage for emotional (negative/positive) over neutral material was not significantly different between sleep and wake groups. When studies without wake groups were included in the analysis after statistical estimation of wake-group parameters, the retention advantage for emotional material was significantly larger in wake groups than in sleep groups (k = 34). Interestingly, however, an additional analysis of eight studies investigating the selective effects of rapid-eye-movement sleep and slow-wave sleep on post-interval emotional memory provided evidence for a selective enhancement of emotional over neutral memory performance after rapid-eye-movement sleep compared to slow-wave sleep. These findings suggest that sleep does not generally enhance visual recognition memory for emotional stimuli. However, the result pattern is consistent with the idea that specific sleep stages preferentially enhance consolidation of emotional and neutral material, respectively. This systematic review and meta-analysis 1) clarifies and quantifies existing results on the association between exposure to workplace bullying and sleep, 2) evaluates the methodological quality of existing studies, 3) identifies theoretical frameworks used in research, 4) determines moderating and mediating variables, and 5) provides guidelines for future research. Searches for primary studies were conducted in Pubmed, Medline, Embase, PsycINFO and Web of Science. Of the 406 studies identified, 26 fulfilled the inclusion criteria for the qualitative synthesis whereas sixteen studies were included in the meta-analysis (cross sectional effect sizes 15; N = 69,199/prospective effect sizes 6; N = 26,164). Workplace bullying was significantly related to sleep problems in all studies. Across cross-sectional studies, targets of bullying had 2.31 higher odds of reporting sleep problems compared to non-bullied workers. The odds across the prospective studies was 1.62. The quality of evidence for the association between workplace bullying and sleep problems was low to moderate. Only eight studies had a predefined theoretical rationale for the association, and few studies examined mediating and moderating variables or bidirectional associations. The methodological quality of the studies was moderate. Further research is needed to establish the nature, directionality, mechanisms, and conditions of the association between bullying and sleep. The membrane binding behaviors of beta-amyloid fibrils, dimers to pentamers, from solution to lipid raft surfaces, were investigated using coarse-grained (CG) MD simulations. Our CG rafts contain phospholipid, cholesterol (with or without tail- or headgroup modifications), and with or without asymmetrically distributed monosialotetrahexosylganglioside (GM1). All rafts exhibited liquid-ordered (Lo), liquid-disordered (Ld), and interfacial Lo/Ld (Lod) domains, with domain sizes depending on cholesterol structure. For rafts without GM1, all fibrils bound to the Lod domains. Specifically, dimer fibrils bound exclusively via the C-terminal, while larger fibrils could bind via other protein regions. Interestingly, a membrane-inserted state was detected for a trimer fibril in a raft with tail-group modified cholesterol. For rafts containing GM1, fibrils bound either to the GM1-clusters, with numerous membrane-bound conformations, or to the non-GM1-containing-Lod domains via the C-terminal. Our results indicate beta-amyloid fibrils bind to Lod domains or GM1, with diversified membrane-bound conformations, in structurally heterogeneous lipid membranes. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a type of noncoding RNA (ncRNA) and have attracted widespread research attention in recent years. They form a covalently closed loop structure and are widely distributed in tissues and organs. CircRNAs have also been found to regulate a variety of biological processes by functioning as microRNA sponges, transcriptional regulators, and protein binding partners. Recent sequencing results have shown that specific circRNA expression patterns are significantly associated with adult stem cell self-renewal and differentiation, indicating that the differential expression of circRNA affects whether adult stem cells initiate the differentiation process. By studying circRNA expression during adult stem cell differentiation into different lineages, such as the osteogenic, chondrogenic, adipogenic, neurogenic, and cardiac lineages, it can be understood that circRNAs are a potential factor regulating adult stem cell differentiation. Herein, we summarize the general characteristics and functional mechanisms of circRNAs and further examine their roles in adult stem cell self-renewal and differentiation. STUDY DESIGN Case series. BACKGROUND AFOs are a commonly prescribed medical device given to children with cerebral palsy (CP) in an attempt to improve their gait. The current literature is equivocal on the effects AFOs have on the gait of children with CP. The vast majority of AFOs issued are not subject to AFO-FC tuning. There are emerging studies investigating the effects tuning AFO-FCs has on the gait of children with CP. However, the research is limited, and there is a lack of quantitative data. OBJECTIVE To compare the kinematics of tuned versus non-tuned gait in children with CP. METHODS Gait analysis assessment of five children aged between 7-11 years with a diagnosis of CP (one hemiplegic and four diplegic participants, two female, three male, with a Gross Motor Functional Classification System (GMFCS) of 2) at a Gait Analysis Laboratory. RESULTS In comparison to barefoot and non-tuned gait, walking with a tuned AFO-FC produced improvements in several key gait parameters. Including hip flexion and extension, posterior pelvic tilt and knee extension. Results also indicated that the type of gait pattern demonstrated by the participant affected the outcomes of tuning. CONCLUSIONS Tuning the AFO-FC of children with CP has the potential to improve hip function, pelvic function, knee extension in stance phase and knee flexion during swing phase and that a non-tuned AFO-FC can potentially decrease hip function, posterior pelvic tilt and increase knee extension. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Whilst AFO-FC tuning has been recommended for routine clinical practice, there still remains a paucity of research on the kinematic effects of using a tuned AFO-FC compared to a non-tuned. This paper provides a comparison of kinematics on children with CP, during barefoot, non-tuned and tuned AFO-FC walking with a view to inform clinical practice. The aim of the study was to determine the differences in the microbiological, physical-chemical, aromatic and phenolic composition between two winemaking methods carbonic maceration and the standard method of destemming and crushing. We analysed 84 commercial Rioja wines made from the Tempranillo grape variety during the 2017 vintage, 40 had been made by carbonic maceration and 44 by destemming and crushing. Despite the heterogeneity within the two groups of wines, it was possible to differentiate between them. Wines made by carbonic maceration presented higher aromatic quality due to their higher total content of esters and acetates, as well as a greater colour intensity due to a higher phenolic content and higher rates of ionization and polymerization. In addition, it was observed that the antioxidant activity, the content in coumaroyl derivatives of anthocyanins and the vitisins A and B were considerably greater in wines made by carbonic maceration. A rapid and sensitive immunochromatographic strip (ICS) based on a single-chain variable fragment (scFv) was developed for detecting fumonisin B1 (FB1). The ICS was based on a competitive reaction for colloidal gold-labeled scFv between FB1 and FB1-BSA, which was used along with sheep anti-mouse IgG as capture reagents immobilized at test and control lines, respectively, on a nitrocellulose membrane of the strip. The limit of detection of the ICS was 2.5 ng/mL (25 μg/kg) FB1 in buffer, and the sensitivity was eight times higher than that of monoclonal antibodies for the preparation of the scFv. selleckchem The cross-reactivity of the scFv with common mycotoxins was determined by ICS, the results showed that the scFv were not against other mycotoxins. Eight naturally contaminated maize samples were analyzed with the scFv-based ICS and by LC-MS/MS. The results of analysis obtained with the strip assay showed good agreement with those obtained by LC-MS/MS. Caseins and whey proteins are known as 'slow' and 'fast' proteins, respectively, based on their amino acid absorption rate. However, there is limited understanding of the mechanisms controlling their behaviour during gastro-intestinal transit. A protein model system (8% total protein) with varying caseinwhey protein ratios (0100, 2080, 5050 and 8020) were subjected to in vitro gastro-intestinal digestion using a semi-dynamic gastric model, a static intestinal model and an ex vivo absorption model (Ussing chambers). The casein-rich (≥50%) samples showed the formation of solid coagula that were persistent throughout gastric digestion, which caused a delay in nutrient emptying, slower digestion and leucine absorption kinetics. In contrast, whey proteins formed more soluble aggregates during the gastric phase, which led to faster gastric emptying, rapid intestinal hydrolysis, and higher and faster leucine absorption. This work shows the key role of the gastric restructuring for the overall digestive mechanism and kinetics of food, in particular proteins.
