Pre-drinking motives (PDM) are linked with different characteristics of pre-drinking occasions (e.g., fast-paced drinking, socializing, moving across locations) that are potentially related to adverse night-level consequences. This study examines the direct associations of three PDM dimensions (fun/intoxication, facilitation, and conviviality) with the occurrence of five consequences (hangover, impaired driving, blackout, risky sex, fight/injury) over and above amounts of alcohol consumed that night.
A sample of 138 young adult nightlife goers (55.1% men, M
=19.0 SD=2.4) in Switzerland reported PDM at baseline, and subsequently reported night-level alcohol use and consequences the next morning on 12.1 weekend nights on average (N=1,663 participant-nights). Correlational analyses and multilevel logistic regression models assessed associations between PDM and night-level consequences.
After adjusting for amounts consumed, age, sex and monthly pre-drinking frequency, conviviality PDM were associated with is not only associated with higher amounts of alcohol consumed, but also with increased risks of specific night-level consequences, including blackouts and risky sexual behaviors, depending on the level of endorsement of each PDM.E-cigarette use among youth remains a public health concern. Although extant literature has examined the perceived harms of cigarette use and secondhand smoke, perceptions of harms associated with secondhand e-cigarette aerosol (SHA) are not well understood. Therefore, we used data from the 2020 U.S. National Youth Tobacco Survey (n = 13,292) in which participants indicated whether SHA caused no harm, little harm, some harm, or a lot of harm. We dichotomized SHA harm perceptions as harmless vs harmful. We included sociodemographics (i.e., age, sex, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, urbanicity), e-cigarette use characteristics, and SHA exposure as covariates and estimated associations between SHA harm perceptions and each covariate using adjusted logistic regression. Most youth perceived SHA as harmful (87.9 %) compared to harmless (12.1 %). Older youth (vs younger youth) had higher odds of perceiving SHA as harmless, whereas male (vs female) youth had 49 % higher odds (95 % CI 1.29-1.72) of perceiving SHA as harmless. As the number of days of e-cigarette use in the past 30 days increased (vs non-users), odds of perceiving SHA as harmless increased. Youth exposed to SHA (vs no exposure) in the past 30 days had 35 % higher odds of perceiving SHA as harmless (95 % CI 1.16-1.57). To conclude, youth SHA harm perceptions varied overall and by sociodemographic characteristics, e-cigarette use, and SHA exposure. Educational campaigns to inform youth of the health risks associated with e-cigarettes and SHA are needed to reduce overall nicotine intake and disparities in nicotine exposure. As common environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), bisphenol AF (BPAF) raises potential concerns for aquatic organisms due to its widespread presence and continued release in the aquatic environment. This research aimed to use zebrafish embryos and adult fish to explore the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations (5 μg/L), 50 μg/L and 500 μg/L of BPAF on zebrafish embryonic development, behavioral alterations, and the potential mechanisms driving these effects. The results showed that 500 μg/L of BPAF severely affected the growth and development of embryos. In behavioral experiments, all concentrations of BPAF significantly inhibited the locomotor activity of larvae, 50 and 500 μg/L BPAF significantly altered the anxiety-like and aggressive behavior of adult zebrafish. Furthermore, environmentally relevant concentrations and higher concentrations of BPAF induced varying degrees of oxidative stress in both embryonic and adult fish. The most significant histopathological changes and decreased acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were observed in the brain at 50 and 500 μg/L of BPAF. We hypothesized that oxidative stress is an important cause of behavioral disturbances in larvae and adult fish. To our best knowledge, the present experiment is a pioneer in studying the effects of BPAF on a variety of complex behaviors (swimming performance, anxiety-like, social behavior, aggression) in zebrafish, which emphasizes the potential health risk of higher concentrations of BPAF in terms of induced neurotoxicity. This paper explores the narratives of service users of contemporary methadone maintenance treatment services (MMT) in the Republic of Ireland to obtain their perspectives in the context of them negotiating their right to health METHODS Participants were recruited and interviewed by a former service user of MMT services. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 40 current and recent users of MMT services RESULTS Participants overwhelmingly reported a reduced sense of personal agency because of their experiences in MMT treatment. Participants observed that their perceptions of treatment were forged by a sense of reduced autonomy, coercive and disrespectful approaches from healthcare workers. Within a system which the participants considered to be failing, the services that they accessed were predicated on a process of reward and punishment, where best practice was often ignored by practitioners, all of which resulted in adverse consequences for service users DISCUSSION The findings indicate that there is a significant 'chasm' between human rights, policy and best practice and how these are operationalised within the structures and practices of Irish MMT services. The treatment of service users, based on human rights principles such as equality, respect, autonomy, empowerment and personal choice remains aspirational and is unlikely to be fulfilled without addressing more systemic challenges such as funding, training of staff, service culture, governance and independent oversight of MMT services.Propolis is a natural antioxidant but, its application is limited due to its strong flavor and alcohol-soluble nature. Soluble complexes and coacervates of almond gum (AG) and sodium caseinate (CAS) were produced at pH = 7 and 4.6, respectively for encapsulation of alcoholic extract of propolis. Despite the higher process yield of complexes at pH = 7, the sample at pH = 4.6 indicated higher encapsulation efficiency, antioxidant activity, and total phenolic content. Sovilnesib concentration The results of FTIR and XRD supported the interaction of propolis with biopolymeric complexes. Moreover, the thermal stability and antibacterial activity of propolis were improved after encapsulation; propolis showed higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive than Gram-negative bacteria. Also, encapsulated propolis showed a controlled release in various food simulants and gastrointestinal environments. Apoptosis evaluation and MTT assay confirmed that the encapsulated propolis induces lower cytotoxicity than pure propolis against fibroblast cell line possibly due to the delayed release of propolis. The NPN compounds from dairy processing side-streams are a promising source for new products. In this study, the NPN profile of lactose production samples was screened using GC-MS and 1H NMR spectroscopy. These analytical platforms allowed the identification of 35 NPN compounds including, amino acids and derivatives, amino alcohols, organic acids, and other classes. Quantification of the NPN compounds revealed their attenuation by unit operations during a trial lactose production. Urea, ammonia, glycerophosphocholine, creatine, creatinine, orotic acid and choline were the most dominant compounds. Mother liquor concentrate had the highest concentration of NPN, whereas lactose powder had substantial relative amounts of N-acetylglucosamine, phosphocholine and orotic acid. The NPN compounds added up to 57-99% of the total nitrogen, depending on the sample type. The highest nitrogen recovery was found for the reverse osmosis retentate, mother liquid concentrate, wash water and reverse osmosis permeate, whereas the lowest was found for lactose powder.Polystyrene-based products are widely used in industrial and daily activities, but their subsequent disposal can negatively affect the environment. This work focuses on reducing polystyrene waste into useful material. A waste-derived polystyrene sorbent (WDPS) was fabricated and successfully applied to determine bisphenol-A in canned beverages. High-performance liquid chromatography with a diode-array detection (HPLC-DAD) was applied to quantify bisphenol-A. Good linearity at a concentration range of 2.5-50 μg L-1 was achieved. The limit of detection was 0.93 ± 0.02 μg L-1. Good precision (RSDs less then 1.6 %, 4 concentrations, n = 6) in spiked coconut juice samples were obtained. The contamination of BPA in canned beverage samples were found in the range of 6.3 ± 0.2 μg L-1 to 27.0 ± 1.0 μg L-1 with recoveries in the range of 70.4 ± 1.6 % to 82.4 ± 0.4 %. This proposed method also offers reduced polystyrene waste, reuse as a sorbent, and recycling after use.Organic cultivation is an eco-friendly planting strategy. To explore the effects of organic cultivation on yield, grain quality, and volatile organic compounds of fragrant rice, the present study conducted a field experiment with organic cultivation and inorganic cultivation treatments over two subsequent growing seasons. The late season rice was sent for the determination of untargeted flavoromics using GC × GC-ToF-MS. Meanwhile, the GC × MS were used for the quantification of 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline. Our results showed that compared with inorganic cultivation, organic cultivation increased grain 2-AP and amylose contents by 21.19-26.10 % and 4.51-7.69 %, respectively. 5.89 %-15.55 % lower crude protein contents were recorded in organic cultivation. The results of untargeted flavoromics showed that organic cultivation caused the absence of 56 volatiles and the exclusive presence of 10 new volatiles compared with inorganic cultivation. In conclusion, organic cultivation produced fragrant rice with lower yield and higher 2-AP content as well as different flavor profiles.Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvents (HDESs) represent a novel kind of solvent. While several studies investigated their properties, just a few dealt with their use for extracting and recovering bioactive compounds from raw materials, wastes and by-products, even if HDESs might represent an interesting alternative when producing pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs and cosmetics. Furthermore, their use may contribute to realizing more sustainable green processes. This review focuses on HDESs, with particular emphasis on Natural HDESs, discussing their properties and uses, highlighting their role as extractants in food applications, both from an analytical and processing point of view, and underlining the positive and negative aspects. While of prospective interest, currently the use of HDESs at industrial level remains a challenge, with several aspects needing further investigation. In order to scale-up the process, more research should focus on key issues, such as solute recovery, solvent recycling and extraction yields, as well as potential health hazards. To construct a nomogram for early prediction of pathological complete response (pCR) in patients with breast cancer (BC) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). A total of 257 patients with BC from the fourth hospital of Hebei Medical University were included in the study. The patients were divided into training (n = 128) and validation groups (n = 129). Variables were screened using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, and the nomogram model was set up based on the training group. The training and validation groups were validated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and calibration plots. The diagnostic value of the nomogram was evaluated using decision curve analysis (DCA). Indicators such as hormone receptor status, clinical TNM stage, and change rate in apparent diffusion coefficient of breast magnetic resonance imaging after two NAC cycles were used for nomogram construction. The calibration plots showed high consistency between nomogram-predicted and actual pCR probabilities in the training and validation groups.
