To examine whether specific stimulation of Shenshu (BL23) affects sympathetic nervous activity (SNA)-associated plasma renin concentration (PRC).
Eight healthy volunteers participated in three pattern conditions in random order control (Cont), stimulation of Shenshu (BL23), and stimulation of sham point (Sham). All participants were initially in the supine position for > 60 min, and then remained in the standing position during the experimental procedure to increase SNA. An electrocardiogram was used to calculate low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) ratio; blood was collected to analyze PRC.
The LF/HF ratio was significantly increased in the standing position when compared with the supine position ( 0.01). There was no difference in LF/HF ratio during or after stimulation of Shenshu (BL23) in the standing position when compared with before the stimulation in the supine position; however, the LF/HF ratio was significantly increased in Cont and Sham conditions ( 0.01). There was no difference in PRC after stimulation of Shenshu (BL23) in the standing position when compared with before the stimulation in the supine position; however, there was a significant increase in PRC in the Cont and Sham conditions (Cont 0.05, Sham 0.01).

To assess the efficacy and safety of ginger-indirect moxibustion for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).
In this central randomized, controlled trial, 290 CFS participants were recruited and randomly allocated to group A (ginger-indirect moxibustion plus acupuncture) or group B (acupuncture alone). The study consisted of a treatment period of 8 weeks with a total of 24 treatments (3 sessions per week, every other day), and a follow-up period of 12 weeks. The outcome was measured by Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Psychological Health Report (SPHERE), the Self-rating depression scale (SDS) and the Hamilton anxiety scale (HAMA) at baseline, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 20 weeks.
With the treatment undergoing, the changes of FSS, SPHERE, SDS and HAMA scores in both groups increased gradually, and the effect maintained at the 12th week. Between groups, significantly higher score changes were seen in group A in FSS after 4 weeks treatment (11.94 9.12, 95% 0.94, 4.7) and in SPHERE after 2 weeks treatment (3.7 2.27, 95% 0.56, 2.31). But for SDS and HAMA, the improvement did not differ significantly between groups. No severe adverse events were reported.

To investigate the clinical efficacy and safety of a diagnosis and treatment plan for moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that integrates traditional Chinese (TCM) and western medicine.

To examine the efficacy of Qinghuayin (, QHY) in rat chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) models and explored the molecular mechanism of QHY in treating CAG.

Our results revealed that histopathological changes in CAG model rates could be restored by low-, medium-, and high-dose QHY. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupoint application therapies (AA) for hypertension.
We searched PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Center Controlled Trials Register, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Scientific Journal Database, and Wanfang Med Online Database from their inceptions to October 7, 2019. No language restriction was applied. We included randomized clinical trials testing AA against Western Medicine, AA versus placebo, AA combined with Western Medicine versus Western Medicine. Study selection, data extraction, quality assessment, and data analyses were conducted according to the Cochrane standards.
Totally 41 trials with 3772 participants were included. The methodological quality of the included trials was evaluated as generally low. AA plus Western Medicine significantly lowered systolic blood pressure (BP) [weighted mean difference () -10.36, 95% confidence intervals () -12.62, -8.10; 0.000 01], diastolic BP ( -5.71, 95% -7.30, -4.13; 0.000 01), and total effect [risk ratio () 1.23, 95% 1.15, 1.32; 0.000 01]. The BP-lowering effect of AA was significantly higher than that of placebo [systolic BP (SBP) -8.05, 95% -8.67, -7.43; 0.000 01; diastolic BP (DBP) -6.66, 95% -7.31, -6.01, 0.000 01]. The total effect also improved significantly from baseline with AA than placebo ( 10.85, 95% 4.71, 24.98; 0.000 01). Traditional Chinese Medicine symptoms score were significantly reduced by AA compared with Western Medicine ( -1.75, 95% -2.52, -0.99; 0.000 01), 10 trials reported adverse events, indicating that the safety of SSYX Capsule is still uncertain.

Methods Arterial blood pressure (BP), body mass, hematocrit, and glycated hemoglobin were investigated as potential sources of between-subject variability in rs-fMRI, in healthy individuals. Whether changes in resting-state networks (rs-networks) could be attributed to variability in the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD)-signal, changes in neuronal activity, or both was of special interest. Within-subject parameters were estimated by utilizing dynamic-causal modeling, as it allows to make inferences on the estimated hemodynamic (BOLD-signal dynamics) and neuronal parameters (effective connectivity) separately. Results The results of the analyses imply that BP and body mass can cause between-subject and between-group variability in the BOLD-signal and that all the included factors can affect the underlying connectivity. Discussion Given the results of the current and previous studies, rs-fMRI results appear to be susceptible to a range of factors, which is likely to contribute to the low degree of replicability of these studies. The non-medical use of image- and performance-enhancing drugs (IPEDs) is widespread in the fitness and bodybuilding scene. The reasons for IPED use are often hedonistic in nature and they are used in so-called "cycles" over several weeks. The most common side effects are testicular atrophy, acne, hypersexuality, hypertension, gynecomastia, lipid metabolism disorders, mood swings, hair loss, and policythemia. Common consequences following IPED use are decreased libido, oligo- or azoospermia, and erectile dysfunction. Dentin contains several key growth factors involved in cartilage regeneration. However, it remains unknown whether dentin matrix extracted proteins (DMEP) can be utilized as a complex growth factor mixture to induce cartilage regeneration. In this work, we extracted DMEP from human dentin and improved the content and activity of chondrogenic-related growth factors in DMEP by alkaline conditioning. Afterward, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with particular physical and chemical properties were composed to selectively load and sustain the release of proteins in DMEP. MSN-DMEP promoted chondrogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells with fewer growth factors than exogenously added transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1). Therefore, MSN-DMEP may serve as a promising candidate for cartilage regeneration as an alternative to expensive synthetic growth factors.Hypertensive renal damage is a common secondary kidney disease caused by poor control of blood pressure. Recent evidence has revealed abnormal activation of the complement alternative pathway (AP) in hypertensive patients and animal models and that this phenomenon is related to hypertensive renal damage. Conditions in the setting of hypertension, including high renin concentration, reduced binding of factor H to the glomerular basement membrane, and abnormal local synthesis of complement proteins, potentially promote the AP activation in the kidney. The products of the AP activation promote the phenotypic transition of mesangial cells and tubular cells, attack endothelial cells and recruit immunocytes to worsen hypertensive renal damage. The effects of complement inhibition on hypertensive renal damage are contradictory. Although clinical data support the use of C5 monoclonal antibody in malignant hypertension, pharmacological inhibition in hypertensive animals provides little benefit to kidney function. Therefore, the role of the complement AP in the pathogenesis of hypertensive renal damage and the value of complement inhibition in hypertensive renal damage treatment must be further explored.Detoxification plays an important role in herbicide action. In the present scenario, rapid, noninvasive detection of the virus using low cost and high throughput microfluidics-based POCT devices embraces the advantages over existing diagnostic technologies, for which a centralized lab facility, expensive instruments, sample pretreatment, and skilled personnel are required. Microfluidic-based multiplexed POCT devices can be a boon for clinical diagnosis in developing countries that lacks a centralized health care system and resources. The microfluidic devices can be used for disease diagnosis and exploited for the development ae disease management in low resource settings.We present a strategy dubbed CURD (correlations using recycle delays) to acquire chemical-shift assignments and distance restraints for proteins in a single experimental block under slow-moderate magic-angle spinning conditions. This is done by concatenating the 3D-CCC and 3D-NNC experiments, both of which individually require long experimental times for sufficient resolution and sensitivity to be realized. Unlike previous approaches, the CURD strategy does not increase the amount of radio-frequency deposition on the sample and does not require lengthy procedures to optimize any of the pulse sequence elements. Instead, time savings is obtained by using the hitherto unused recycle delay of one of the experiments (2D-CC/3D-CCC) to establish inter-residue correlations for the second experiment (2D-NN/3D-NNC). Experiments are demonstrated on a model protein at the MAS frequency of 12.5 kHz and are shown to result in time savings of the order of days for most of the routine cases.Twelve new cytochalasins, phomopchalasins D-O (1-3, 5-12, and 14), including one brominated (2) and two iodinated cytochalasins (3 and 6), together with six known analogues (4, 13, and 15-18) were isolated from the mangrove-derived fungus Phomopsis sp. link2 QYM-13 treated with 3% NaBr or 3% KI in potato liquid medium. In this report, a series of substituted boramino acids were synthesized and evaluated, aiming to obtain metabolically stable boron-derived agents that could integrate positron emission tomography (PET) with BNCT (a theranostic agent). Based on the phenylalanine (Phe) core structure, the impact of substitution groups on tumor accumulation was studied. The agents were labeled with fluorine-18 in 27.2-66.8% yield via the 18F-19F isotope exchange reaction. In B16-F10 tumor-bearing mice, [18F]-(R)-(1-ammonio-2-(4-methoxyphenyl) ethyl) trifluoroborate (R-[18F]-5a) demonstrated the best tumor uptake (5.54 ± 2.32% ID/g based on ex vivo biodistribution and 3.5 ± 0.04% ID/g based on PET imaging with the tumor-to-muscle ratio up to 2.6) and stability compared with other tested agents. Together, R-[18F]-5a is a promising agent that could potentially integrate PET and BNCT, whose treatment efficacy is worth further evaluation in the future.Two new lactone lipids, scoriosin (1) and its methyl ester (2), with a rare furylidene ring joined to a tetrahydrofurandione ring, were isolated from Scorias spongiosa, commonly referred to as sooty mold. In addition to the potent antimicrobial activities, compound 2 strongly potentiated the activity of amphotericin B against Cryptococcus neoformans, suggesting the potential utility of this compound in combination therapies for treating cryptococcal infections.Exposure of children to their parents' intimate partner violence (IPV) is recognized as an adverse childhood experience that has a significant impact on the overall healthy development of the children and this research summarizes all relevant literature to determine the prevalence, impacts, risks, and protective factors of adolescents subjected to parental IPV since childhood. The literature in this scoping was scrutinized based on both inclusion, exclusion criteria. Almost 15 articles were reviewed out of 118 related literature sourced from electronic databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Research Gate, and Google Scholar published in the year 2016-2021. The search method followed Mays, Roberts, and Popay's process of gathering relevant literature and mapping important ideas to capture the available data in a study topic, especially the one which lacked proper evaluation. The results of this review of the literature indicate that parental IPV is a pervasive problem that impairs the adolescent's overall well-being. It also highlights a range of protective factors that can mitigate the impact of parental IPV. The findings of this scoping review have implications for practice and policy. Given the enormous scope and burden of children's parental IPV exposure, intervention techniques to safeguard this vulnerable population and enhance well-being are urgently needed.As the most abundant renewable aromatic resource on Earth, lignin is a preferred starting material for producing bulk chemicals via a sustainable route. In this study, we provide a novel and efficient "clip-off" approach for producing methyl p-coumarate, an important and versatile fine chemical by selective cleavage of the ester linkage in herbaceous lignin in the presence of commercial metal chlorides. When bagasse lignin was depolymerized at 155 °C for 4 h, a 12.7% yield of aromatic chemicals was obtained in the presence of CuCl2, 71.7% of which was identified as methyl p-coumarate (the yield was 9.1%). Further investigation of the structural evolution of lignin revealed that the ester linkages in lignin were efficiently broken via intensive transesterification with methanol accompanied by the simultaneous weakening of the inter-/intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Moreover, this observation of selective cleavage of ester linkages could be further confirmed by the conversion of model compounds with characteristic bonds under identical reaction conditions. Therefore, this work provides a new insight into the production of value-added chemicals from renewable resources.
Declining house-call rates have been documented worldwide; however, up-to-date data on current rates are lacking, particularly in rural settings. Systematic reviews in this area are inconsistent; however, other work, principally qualitative research, demonstrates benefits for both doctors and patients. The aim of this study was to establish the current rate of, and reasons for, home visits in a rural general practice setting.
This was a descriptive observational study in the north-west of Ireland. Fourteen general practice training practices with approximately 30 000 patients were recruited. Data on house calls done in each practice were collected during May and June 2019. Anonymised data were analysed using Microsoft Excel and GraphPad.
Data were received on 547 house calls. The rate of house calls done within normal working hours (443) was calculated at 87 house calls/1000 patients/year (raw proportion 1.44%). Using the N-1 χ2 test, this rate was compared to that calculated in a similar 2009 study (14ervice worth saving.Defense against viruses and other mobile genetic elements (MGEs) is important in many organisms. No CRISPR-Cas system is found to occur naturally in eukaryotic cells, but here, we demonstrate interference by a type I-E CRISPR-Cas system from Escherichia coli introduced in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The designed CRISPR arrays are expressed and processed properly in S. cerevisiae. Targeted plasmids display reduced transformation efficiency, indicative of DNA cleavage. IMPORTANCE Genetic inactivation of viruses and other MGEs is an important tool with application in both research and therapy. Gene editing using, e.g., Cas9-based systems, can be used to inactivate MGEs in eukaryotes by introducing specific mutations. However, type I-E systems processively degrade the target which allows for inactivation without detailed knowledge of gene function. Premature infants are at high risk of suffering from lifelong impairments, due in part to aberrant development of gut microbiota that can contribute to early-life infections and inflammation. Despite their importance to health, the ecological assembly and succession processes governing gut microbiome composition in premature infants remained incompletely understood. Here, we quantified these ecological processes in a spatiotemporally resolved 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing data set of 60 extremely premature neonates using an established mathematical framework. We found that gut colonization during the first months of life is predominantly stochastic, whereby interindividual diversification of microbiota is driven by ecological drift. Dispersal limitations are initially small but have increasing influence at later stages of succession. Here, a new paradigm of a natural collagen fiber network (CFN) with soft and breathable features, which can be obtained by facilely treating animal hides via conventional leather pretreatment process, is selected as substrate material for constructing smart insoles due to its high permeability and porosity. Further, biocompatible zwitterionic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with both carboxybetaine and catechol groups on the interface were designed for firmly and uniformly immobilization onto the hierarchical micro-/nanoscale fibers of CFN through mussel-inspired catechol/amino chemistry, giving rise to both good antibacterial property and pressure sensing capability of the resultant material. The finally developed smart insole by using the AgNPs decorated CFN exhibits good capability for plantar pressure mapping and gait feature analysis. Especially, the smart insole will be very suitable for pressure monitoring and gait analysis of a diabetic foot with sensitive skin that requires a high biocompatible and antibacterial environment.Although mass spectrometry is a widely used analytical tool, age-appropriate, interactive outreach activities for laboratory visitors, especially children, are lacking. The presented interactive demonstration, "Did you eat a MOLEcule today?", introduces all ages to molecular weight concepts and mass spectrometry in a research laboratory, while connecting the concepts to real-world applications. Through real-time breath analysis, participants explore the concepts of molecular weight, electrostatic field manipulation of charged molecules, and analyte identification by mass analysis. This module is rapid and highly adaptable for outreach activities but also includes age- or classroom-appropriate variations to decrease or increase difficulty levels. The presented interactive demonstration has repeatedly been implemented, with over 2300 participants during six annual "Take Our Daughters & Sons to Work Day" and two corporate "Family Day" outreach activities, successfully engaging, exciting, and educating both kids and parents.Glioma is the most prevalent invasive primary tumor of the central nervous system. Non-coding RNAs are widely involved in tumor progression and treatment resistance mechanisms. In the present review, we discuss the pathways by which microRNAs and long non-coding RNAs can affect resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as well as offer potential therapeutic options for future glioma treatment.Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a new type of porous material, have shown many possible applications in gas storage and separation, biomedicine, catalysis, and so on. While most MOFs are synthesized through solvothermal synthesis where a large quantity of organic solvent is used, the green synthetic approach using a minimized amount of solvent is important to prevent irreversible environmental compacts. In this study, we successfully synthesized Zr-MOFs with SBUs (e.g., UiO-66 and MIL-140A) using a simple metal source and investigated the role of organic modulators in modulating the MOF structures during solid-state synthesis. Meanwhile, UiO-66 rich in defects synthesized via a solid-state conversion strategy shows good catalytic performance for the ring-opening of epoxides with alcohols. This work contributes to the understanding of the role of organic modulators in the solid-state synthesis of MOFs.Candida auris is an urgent threat to human health due to its rapid spread in health care settings and its repeated development of multidrug resistance. Diseases that increase risk for C. auris infection, such as diabetes, kidney failure, or immunocompromising conditions, are associated with elevated levels of methylglyoxal (MG), a reactive dicarbonyl compound derived from several metabolic processes. In other Candida species, expression of MG reductase enzymes that catabolize and detoxify MG are controlled by Mrr1, a multidrug resistance-associated transcription factor, and MG induces Mrr1 activity. Here, we used transcriptomics and genetic assays to determine that C. auris MRR1a contributes to MG resistance, and that the main Mrr1a targets are an MG reductase and MDR1, which encodes a drug efflux protein. The C. link3 auris Mrr1a regulon is smaller than Mrr1 regulons described in other species. In addition to MG, benomyl (BEN), a known Mrr1 stimulus, induces C. selleck chemicals auris Mrr1 activity, and characterization of the MRR1ute to resistance to methylglyoxal (MG), a toxic metabolic product that is often elevated in different disease states. MG can activate Mrr1 and its induction of Mdr1 which can protect against diverse challenges. The significance of this work lies in showing that MG is also an inducer of Mrr1 in C. auris, and that one of the major pathogenic C. auris lineages has an activating Mrr1 mutation that confers protection against MG.
