Accordingly, various methods were examined that used the fabricated liquefied red mud (LRM) as an admixture for concrete, and the mechanical properties of concrete were then evaluated according to the cement type and the amount of LRM. The LRM mixing methods (replacement and addition) were compared, and the slump and compressive strengths of concrete were evaluated for each method. To examine the mechanical properties according to the cement type and the amount of LRM, two types of cement (ordinary Portland cement and slag cement (SC)) were used, and 20 and 40 wt% LRM (with respect to the cement weight) were added. The mechanical properties of the stress-strain curve (SSC), compressive strength, peak strain, and elastic modulus were quantified. When the slump and compressive strength of concrete were considered based on the experimental results, the addition LRM mixing method was recommended as the appropriate method for LRM. As the addition of LRM increased, the mechanical properties of concrete degraded. However, when SC was used, the mechanical properties did not significantly change when different amounts of LRM were added (up to 20%). In addition, the SSC of LRM concrete could be approximated based on the use of the relationship of the compressive strength and peak strain according to the cement type and the amount of LRM.Physical activity and obesity counselling have both been gaining increasing interest in preventive health and treatment. However, most healthcare professionals do not provide advice on these topics nearly as often as they should. There are many reasons for this. Common barriers for the provision of brief advice on physical activity and obesity in both primary and secondary care are lack of time, motivation and knowledge. Systematic reviews have been published on the barriers of physical activity and obesity counselling in the primary care setting, but there is no published work on the barriers present in secondary care. This systematic review aims to assess all published data that discuss the barriers of physical activity and obesity counselling as noted by healthcare providers in secondary care. Four databases will be searched using the same search strategy, and the findings will be compiled using the COM-B model to explore the frequency of a reported barrier. This systematic review will be beneficial not only to practicing healthcare providers, but also the educational and managerial staff of secondary care facilities, as it may highlight the need for further training to fill gaps in the provision of preventive healthcare.This work presents the synthesis of the novel covalent inhibitor of cysteine proteases where epoxide has been replaced by the iodoacetyl functional group. The molecule, similar in action to E-64 and DCG-04, the commonly applied inhibitors, is additionally biotinylated and contains tyrosyl iodination sites. The Fmoc solid phase synthesis has been applied. Conjugation of iodoacetic acid with the peptide was optimized by testing different conjugation agents. The purity of the final product was verified by mass spectrometry and its bioactivity was tested by incubation with a model cysteine protease-staphopain C. Finally, it was shown that the synthesized inhibitor binds to the protein at the ratio of 11. To develop novel algorithms based on fundus image descriptors that allow the automatic classification of retinal tissue into healthy and pathological in early stages is necessary. In this paper, we focus on one of the most common pathologies in the current society diabetic retinopathy. The proposed method avoids the necessity of lesion segmentation or candidate map generation before the classification stage. Local binary patterns and granulometric profiles are locally computed to extract texture and morphological information from retinal images. Different combinations of this information feed classification algorithms to optimally discriminate bright and dark lesions from healthy tissues. Through several experiments, the ability of the proposed system to identify diabetic retinopathy signs is validated using different public databases with a large degree of variability and without image exclusion.Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) strongly contribute to multiple myeloma (MM) progression, promoting the survival and growth of malignant plasma cells (PCs). However, the possible impact of these cells on the immune-mediated recognition of MM cells remains largely unknown. DNAM-1 activating receptor plays a prominent role in NK cell anti-MM response engaging the ligands poliovirus receptor (PVR) and nectin-2 on malignant PCs. Here, we analysed the role of MM patient-derived BMSCs in the regulation of PVR expression. We found that BMSCs enhance PVR surface expression on MM cells and promote their NK cell-mediated recognition. Ixazomib price PVR upregulation occurs at transcriptional level and involves NF-kB transcription factor activation by BMSC-derived soluble factors. Indeed, overexpression of a dominant-negative mutant of IKBα blocked PVR upregulation. IL-8 plays a prominent role in these mechanisms since blockade of CXCR1/2 receptors as well as depletion of the cytokine via RNA interference prevents the enhancement of PVR expression by BMSC-derived conditioned medium. Interestingly, IL-8 is associated with stromal microvesicles which are also required for PVR upregulation via CXCR1/CXCR2 signaling activation. Our findings identify BMSCs as regulators of NK cell anti-MM response and contribute to define novel molecular pathways involved in the regulation of PVR expression in cancer cells.The assessment of animal welfare poses numerous challenges, yet an emerging approach is the consolidation of existing knowledge into new frameworks which can offer standardised approaches to welfare assessment across a variety of contexts. Multiple tools exist for measuring the welfare of equids, but such tools have typically been developed for specific contexts. There is no 'one size fits all' which means that resulting datasets are generally non-comparable, creating a barrier to knowledge-sharing and collaboration between the many organisations working to improve equid welfare around the globe. To address this, we developed the Equid Assessment, Research and Scoping (EARS) tool, which incorporates pre-existing validated welfare assessment methods alongside new welfare indicators to deliver a larger and more comprehensive series of welfare indicators than currently exists, creating a single resource that can be used to assess equid welfare in any context. We field-trialled three welfare assessment protocols within the EARS tool, and applied these to welfare assessment of equids in a variety of contexts across nineteen countries.
