Despite available guidelines, timing of screening and optimal treatment of thyroid dysfunction in premature infants remains controversial. Furthermore, it is unknown whether untreated thyroid dysfunction in premature babies affects neurodevelopmental outcome. In the vast majority of preterm infants, hypothyroxinaemia is transient; however, permanent hypothyroidism due to thyroid dysgenesis or enzyme defects might also occur. Therefore, careful monitoring of thyroid function and long-term follow-up is needed to assess an appropriate therapeutic approach. This article reviews thyroid physiology in preterm infants, the influences of gestation and other neonatal conditions on thyroid function tests, optimal timing of screening and possible predictors to differentiate transient hypothyroxinaemia from permanent hypothyroidism.In this study, the ameliorative effect of purified polyphenols from Arctium lappa L (ALPP) on doxorubicin (DOX)-induce heart failure was investigated. Results indicated that ALPP pretreatment significantly reduced the activities of casein kinase and lactate dehydrogenase, lowered the levels of inflammatory indexes (TNF-α and NO), and alleviated antioxidant stress in DOX-induce mice, thus leading to a reduced heart failure syndrome. In addition, according to 16s high-throughput sequencing, the increased abundance of Lactobacillaceae, Muribaculaceae, and Ruminococcaceae and the decreased abundance of Proteobacteria, Enterobacteriaee, and Escherichia_Shigella were observed in ALPP treatment group. ALPP could significantly enhance the abundance of bacteria producing short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and then promote the increase of SCFAs. Consequently, ALPP might be a therapeutic alternative in the treatment of DOX-induced heart failure. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS The effect of Arctium lappa L (ALPP) on doxorubicin (DOX)-induced heart failure was investigated. It provided experimental basis for further studies on the biological activity of polyphenols from ALPP. The results demonstrated that ALPP could significantly ameliorate DOX-induced heart failure and improve the gut microbiota composition. The obtained results could provide the potential application of ALPP as an alternative therapy for heart failure in the functional food industry.
Currently, there is debate in the eating disorders field regarding how to define atypical anorexia (AAN), how prevalent it is in community and clinical settings, and how AAN rates compare with low-weight AN. This systematic review assesses AAN literature from 2007 to 2020, to investigate (a) the demographic characteristics of AAN studies, (b) the prevalence of AAN compared with AN, (c) the range of operational definitions of AAN and the implications of these definitions, and (d) the proportion of patients with AAN and AN represented in consecutive admission and referral samples.

PsychINFO, CINAHL, PubMed, Greylit.org, and ProQuest databases were searched according to methods for Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses systematic reviews, yielding 3,184 potential articles. Seventy-five eligible studies were coded for sixty-one variables.

Here we synthesize the biogeography of key organisms (vascular and nonvascular vegetation and soil microorganisms), attributes (functional traits, spatial patterns, plant-plant and plant-soil interactions) and processes (productivity and land cover) across global drylands. These areas have a long evolutionary history, are centers of diversification for many plant lineages and include important plant diversity hotspots. This diversity captures a strikingly high portion of the variation in leaf functional diversity observed globally. Part of this functional diversity is associated with the large variation in response and effect traits in the shrubs encroaching dryland grasslands. Aridity and its interplay with the traits of interacting plant species largely shape biogeographical patterns in plant-plant and plant-soil interactions, and in plant spatial patterns. Aridity also drives the composition of biocrust communities and vegetation productivity, which shows large geographical variation. We finish our review by discussing major research gaps, which include studying regular vegetation spatial patterns; establishing large-scale plant and biocrust field surveys assessing individual-level trait measurements; knowing whether the impacts of plant-plant and plant-soil interactions on biodiversity are predictable; and assessing how elevated CO2 modulates future aridity conditions and plant productivity.
The acidic skin pH is one of the regulating factors of skin barrier homeostasis. Topical products as extrinsic factors which influence skin pH could be used for acidification of the skin and consequent beneficial effect. To formulate stabile and safe topical emulsion product with low pH is on-going challenge and areas interesting to explore are related to the effect of acidic products on the skin pH together with development of protocols for these studies. Aim of our work was to investigate formulations of acidic topical products with glycolic acid (GA) stabilized with long chain alkyl polyglucoside emulsifier, in regard to the specific colloidal structure of the vehicle, together with effect of products with different concentration of acidic active on skin pH.

High recurrence rates following antibiotic treatment, along with the emergence of hypervirulent and multidrug resistant ribotypes makes essential the development of safe, effective, novel therapies for the treatment of C. difficile infections. The primary outcome evaluated in this meta-analysis was the effectiveness of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). Secondary outcomes were the proportion of patients suffering adverse effects along with the most effective administration route. The mean treatment effectiveness was 82% (95% CI 75-89). Overall, patients receiving FMT via colonoscopy experienced more adverse effects than patients whom received enema, or oral capsules (71·6% vs 40·2%, and 35·3% respectively). Comparing administration of FMT by colonoscopy versus enema resulted in a Hedges' g of -0·74 (95% CI of -0·9 to -0·58), indicating a slight advantage in favor of colonoscopy. The comparison between colonoscopy and capsule returned a Hedges' g of 0·44 (95% CI of 0·20-0·69), indicating that delivery of the FMT by capsule was statistically significantly more effective. FMT provides an effective and safe treatment for C. difficile diarrhea. Further research into the efficacy of different preparation protocols is needed.Weighted aggregation of expert judgments based on their performance on calibration questions may improve mathematically aggregated judgments relative to equal weights. However, obtaining validated, relevant calibration questions can be difficult. If so, should analysts settle for equal weights? Or should they use calibration questions that are easier to obtain but less relevant? In this article, we examine what happens to the out-of-sample performance of weighted aggregations of the classical model (CM) compared to equal weighted aggregations when the set of calibration questions includes many so-called "irrelevant" questions, those that might ordinarily be considered to be outside the domain of the questions of interest. We find that performance weighted aggregations outperform equal weights on the combined CM score, but not on statistical accuracy (i.e., calibration). Importantly, there was no appreciable difference in performance when weights were developed on relevant versus irrelevant questions. Here, we aimed to examine whether the neonatal airway immune composition associates with development of allergy and asthma in childhood.

We measured unstimulated levels of 20 immune mediators related to the Type 1, Type 2, Type 17, or regulatory immune pathways in the airway mucosal lining fluid of 620 one-month-old healthy neonates from the COPSAC
birth cohort. Allergy and asthma were diagnosed at our research clinic by predefined algorithms and objective assessments at age 6years. Principal component analyses were used to describe the airway cytokine and chemokine composition.

A neonatal airway immune profile particularly characterized by enhanced IL-1β and reduced CCL26 was significantly associated with later development of elevated specific IgE to inhaled allergens, a positive skin prick test, and allergic rhinitis, but not with food sensitization.
