The biological research on newly synthesized amidoximes, Boc-protected amidoximes and Boc-derived amidines, obtained by a reduction of the parent amidoximes is reported, herein. Due to the presence of a free amino group in both amidines and amidoximes, these compounds can undergo various chemical reactions such as N-alkylation and N-acylation. One such reaction is Boc-protection, often used in organic synthesis to protect the amino and imino groups. Until now, Boc-protected amidoximes have not been tested for biological activity. Amidoxime derivatives were tested on bacterial E. coli strains. Initial cellular studies tests and digestion with Fpg after the modification of bacterial DNA, suggest that these compounds may have greater potential as antibacterial agents compared to antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin (ci), bleomycin (b) and cloxacillin (cl). The described compounds are highly specific for pathogenic E. coli strains on the basis of the model strains used and may be used in the future as new substitutes for commonly used antibiotics in clinical and hospital infections in the pandemic era. This study investigated the air aging converter (Basic Oxygen Furnace, BOF) slag aggregate mortar with pulverized fly ash (PFA) and ferronickel slag (FNS). The chemical composition and mineralogical constituents of BOF incorporated mortar were analyzed. Setting time, flowability, compressive strength, and length change were measured to evaluate the fundamental properties of BOF mortar. The X-ray CT analysis was employed to observe the effect of converter slag in the cement matrix visually. The results showed that the hydration of BOF generated a pore at the vicinity of the aggregate, which decreased the compressive strength and increased the length change of mortar. However, the PFA or FNS incorporation of PFA or FNS can decrease the alkalinity of pore solution and subsequently reduce the reactivity of BOF aggregate. Thus, the incorporation of PFA and FNS can be a way to eliminate the disadvantage of BOF, such as volume expansion.Eu3+-doped oxide thin films possess a great potential for several emerging applications in optics, optoelectronics, and sensors. The applications demand maximizing Eu3+ photoluminescence response. Eu-doped ZnO, TiO2, and Lu2O3 thin films were deposited by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). Pulsed UV Laser Annealing (PLA) was utilized to modify the properties of the films. In situ monitoring of the evolution of optical properties (photoluminescence and transmittance) at PLA was realized to optimize efficiently PLA conditions. The changes in optical properties were related to structural, microstructural, and surface properties characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). find more The substantial increase of Eu3+ emission was observed for all annealed materials. PLA induces crystallization of TiO2 and Lu2O3 amorphous matrix, while in the case of already nanocrystalline ZnO, rather surface smoothening0related grains' coalescence was observed. The synthesis of lightweight yet strong-ductile materials has been an imperative challenge in alloy design. In this study, the CoCrNi-based medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) with added Al and Si were manufactured by vacuum arc melting furnace subsequently followed by cool rolling and anneal process. The mechanical responses of CoCrNiAl0.1Si0.1 MEAs under quasi-static (1 × 10-3 s-1) tensile strength showed that MEAs had an outstanding balance of yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation. The yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation were increased from 480 MPa, 900 MPa, and 58% at 298 K to 700 MPa, 1250 MPa, and 72% at 77 K, respectively. Temperature dependencies of the yield strength and strain hardening were investigated to understand the excellent mechanical performance, considering the contribution of lattice distortions, deformation twins, and microbands. Severe lattice distortions were determined to play a predominant role in the temperature-dependent yield stress. The Peierls barrier height increased with decreasing temperature, owing to thermal vibrations causing the effective width of a dislocation core to decrease. Through the thermodynamic formula, the stacking fault energies were calculated to be 14.12 mJ/m2 and 8.32 mJ/m2 at 298 K and 77 K, respectively. In conclusion, the enhanced strength and ductility at cryogenic temperature can be attributed to multiple deformation mechanisms including dislocations, extensive deformation twins, and microbands. The synergistic effect of multiple deformation mechanisms lead to the outstanding mechanical properties of the alloy at room and cryogenic temperature. This paper shows the results of an investigation on the synthesis of non-porous and nanocrystalline ZrO2-Gd2O3 layers by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) with the use of Zr(tmhd)4 (tetrakis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)zirconium(IV)) and Gd(tmhd)3 (tris(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)gadolinium(III)). Argon and air were used as carrier gases. The molar content of Gd(tmhd)3 in the gas reaction mixture was as follows 10% and 20%. The layers were synthesized on tubular substrates made of quartz glass at the temperatures of 550-700 °C. Synthesis conditions were established using the Grx/Rex2 expression (Gr is the Grashof number; Re is the Reynolds number; x is the distance from the gas inflow point). The value of this criterion was below 0.01. ZrO2-Gd2O3 layers synthesized at 600-700 °C were crystalline. When the molar content of Gd(tmhd)3 in the gas reaction mixture was 10 mol.%, a relationship between the chemical composition of the gas reaction mixture and that of the deposited layer could be observed. The synthesized layers underwent scanning electron microscopy, as well as X-ray analysis. The transparency of coated and uncoated glass was tested using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Their chemical composition was examined with the use of an EDS analyzer.Epitaxial synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials on pristine 2D materials is of interest in the development of nanostructured devices and nanocomposite materials, but is quite difficult because pristine surfaces of 2D materials are chemically inert. Previous studies found a few exceptions including AuCN, AgCN, CuCN, and Cu0.5Au0.5CN, which can be preferentially synthesized and epitaxially aligned onto various 2D materials. Here, we discover that Au1/2Ag1/2CN forms diamond-shaped nanocrystals epitaxially grown on pristine graphene surfaces. The nanocrystals synthesized by a simple drop-casting method are crystallographically aligned to lattice structures of the underlying graphene. Our experimental investigations on 3D structures and the synthesis conditions of the nanocrystals imply that the rhombic 2D geometries originate from different growth rates depending on orientations along and perpendicular to 1D molecular chains of Au1/2Ag1/2CN. We also perform in situ TEM observations showing that Au1/2Ag1/2CN nanocrystals are decomposed to Au and Ag alloy nanocrystals under electron beam irradiation. Our experimental results provide an additional example of 1D cyanide chain families that form ordered nanocrystals epitaxially aligned on 2D materials, and reveal basic physical characteristics of this rarely investigated nanomaterial.Probiotic extracts have various positive attributes, such as antioxidant, tyrosinase inhibitory, and antimicrobial activity. Lactobacillus curvatus produces bacteriocin, which activates the lipid membrane structure and has potential as a natural preservative for cosmetic emulsions. In this study, L. curvatus extract was encapsulated in liposomes and formulated as an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion. Radical scavenging activity, tyrosinase inhibition, and challenge tests were conducted to confirm the liposome activity and the activity of the applied lotion emulsion. The liposome-encapsulated extract had a relatively high absolute ζ-potential (52.53 > 35.43), indicating its stability, and 96% permeability, which indicates its potential as an active agent in lotion emulsions. Characterization of emulsions containing the liposomes also indicated a stable state. The liposome-encapsulated extract exhibited a higher radical scavenging activity than samples without the extract and non-encapsulated samples, and the functionality was preserved in the lotion emulsion. The tyrosinase inhibition activity of the lotion emulsion with the liposome-encapsulated extract was similar to that of the non-treated extract. Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger were also inhibited in the challenge test with the lotion emulsions during storage. Collectively, these findings indicate that the liposome-encapsulated extract and the lotion containing the encapsulated extract have potential applicability as natural preservatives. This paper investigates the effect that the selection of the die material generates on the extrusion process of bimetallic cylindrical billets combining a magnesium alloy core (AZ31B) and a titanium alloy sleeve (Ti6Al4V) of interest in aeronautical applications. A robust finite element model is developed to analyze the variation in the extrusion force, damage distribution, and wear using different die materials. The results show that die material is a key factor to be taken into account in multi-material extrusion processes. The die material selection can cause variations in the extrusion force from 8% up to 15%, changing the effect of the extrusion parameters, for example, optimum die semi-angle. Damage distribution in the extrudate is also affected by die material, mainly in the core. Lastly, die wear is the most affected parameter due to the different hardness of the materials, as well as due to the variations in the normal pressure and sliding velocity, finding critical values in the friction coefficient for which the die cannot be used for more than one forming stage because of the heavy wear suffered. These results can potentially be used to improve the efficiency of this kind of extrusion process and the quality of the extruded part that, along with the use of lightweight materials, can contribute to sustainable production approaches. One means of enhancing the performance of thermoelectric materials is to generate secondary nanoprecipitates of metallic or semiconducting properties in a thermoelectric matrix, to form proper band bending and, in turn, to induce a low-energy carrier filtering effect. However, forming nanocomposites is challenging, and proper band bending relationships with secondary phases are largely unknown. Herein, we investigate the in situ phase segregation behavior during melt spinning with various metal elements, including Ti, V, Nb, Mo, W, Ni, Pd, and Cu, in p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 (BST) thermoelectric alloys. The results showed that various metal chalcogenides were formed, which were related to the added metal elements as secondary phases. The electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity of the BST composite with various secondary phases were measured and compared with those of pristine BST alloys. Possible band alignments with the secondary phases are introduced, which could be utilized for further investigation of a possible carrier filtering effect when forming nanocomposites.
