Despite the fact that anemia is a common health problem with many consequences, its magnitude among adults and the different contributing factors have not been documented in the study setting. Hence, this study aimed to determine the magnitude of anemia and associated factors among adult patients of Baso Liben District.

A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from 1 December 2019, to February 30, 2020. A total of 347 adult patients attending Yejubie Hospital were enrolled in the study. Socio-demographic data were collected through face-to-face interview. Patients' hemoglobin level was determined by a Mindray BC-5800 CBC hematology analyzer. The presence of intestinal parasites and malaria infection were assessed.

The overall magnitude of anemia was 25.94% with moderate severity according to the WHO anemia classification. The prevalence of mild, moderate, and severe anemia was 13.54%, 8.36%, and 4.03%, respectively. Anemia was associated with age range ≥55years (AOR=31.66), large family size (AOR=6.62), being married (AOR=0.24), intestinal parasite infections (AOR=4.05), malaria infection (AOR=4.61), and pregnancy (AOR=4.09).

Effective therapy and early outcome detection are critical as toxicity profiles following immunotherapies can severely affect patients' quality of life. Existing imaging techniques, including positron emission tomography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, or multiplexed imaging, are often used in clinics yet suffer from limitations in the early assessment of immune response. Conventional strategies to validate immune response mainly rely on the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) and the modified iRECIST for immuno-oncology drug trials. However, accurate monitoring of immunotherapy efficacy is challenging since the response does not always follow conventional RECIST criteria due to delayed and variable kinetics in immunotherapy responses. Engineered nanomaterials for immunotherapy applications have significantly contributed to overcoming these challenges by improving drug delivery and dynamic imaging techniques. This review summarizes challenges in recent immune-modulation approaches and traditional imaging tools, followed by emerging developments in three-in-one nanoimmunotheranostic systems co-opting nanotechnology, immunotherapy, and imaging. In addition, a comprehensive overview of imaging modalities in recent cancer immunotherapy research and a brief outlook on how nanotheranostic platforms can potentially advance to clinical translations for the field of immuno-oncology is presented.
Previous population health studies examining adults with acute myeloid leukemia (AML); however many of these, such as the Cancer Genome Atlas, are derived from databases collected by large urban centers. Due to its unique industry and environmental exposures, we hypothesized the West Virginia Appalachian population may have different mutational trends and clinical outcomes.

To address the concern of under-representation of rural minorities in cancer genomic databases, we performed exploratory whole exome sequencing in patients with newly diagnosed AML in rural Appalachia.

Correlations between genetic variants and clinical outcome variables were examined via retrospective chart review. A total of 26 patients were identified and whole exome sequencing was performed. Median age was 68 years old. Twenty-one patients had de novo AML (84%). As per European LeukemiaNet (ELN) criteria, 8 patients were favorable (32%), 12 were intermediate (48%), and 5 were adverse risk (20%). Eight patients proceeded to transplant. The median progression-free survival and overall survival were 16.5months and 26.6months, respectively. We noted an increased tumor mutation burden and a higher frequency of specific known driver mutations when compared to The Cancer Genome Atlas database; we also found novel mutations in MUC3A, MUC5AC, HCAR3, ORT2B, and PABPC. Survival outcomes were slightly lower than national average and BCOR mutation correlated with inferior outcomes.

Such information is important about individuals' vulnerability to severe symptoms or their likelihood of showing no symptoms. We immobilized online SARS-CoV-2 spike (S1) protein and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) into separate surface plasmon resonance (SPR) channels of a tris-nitrilotriacetic acid (tris-NTA) chip to simultaneously detect the anti-S1 antibody and viral particles in serum samples. In addition, with a high-molecular-weight-cutoff filter, we separated the neutralized viral particles from the free antibody molecules and used a sensing channel immobilized with Protein G to determine antibody-neutralized viral particles. The optimal density of probe molecules in each fluidic channel can be precisely controlled through the closure and opening of the specific ports. By utilizing the high surface density of ACE2, multiple assays can be carried out without regenerations. These three species can be determined with a short analysis time ( less then 12 min per assay) and excellent sensor-to-sensor/cycle-to-cycle reproducibility (RSD less then 5%). When coupled with an autosampler, continuous assays can be performed in an unattended manner at a single chip for up to 6 days. Such a sensor capable of assaying serum samples containing the three species at different levels provides additional insights into the disease status and immunity of persons being tested, which should be helpful for containing the SARS-CoV-2 spread during the era of incessant viral mutations.Recent work shows that 18-month old infants understand that counting is numerically relevant-infants who see objects counted are more likely to represent the approximate number of objects in the array than infants who see the objects labeled but not counted. Which aspects of counting signal infants to attend to numerosity in this way? Here we asked whether infants rely on familiarity with the count words in their native language, or on procedures instantiated by the counting routine, independent of specific tokens. In three experiments (N = 48), we found that 18-month old infants from English-speaking households successfully distinguished four hidden objects from two when the objects were counted correctly, regardless of their familiarity with the count words (i.e., when objects were counted in familiar English and in unfamiliar German). However, when the objects were counted using familiar English count words in ways that violated basic counting principles, infants no longer represented the arrays, failing to distinguish four hidden objects from two. Together with previous findings, these results suggest that children may link the procedure of counting with numerosity years before they learn the meanings of the count words.
Organotin pollutant tributyltin (TBT) is an environmental endocrine disrupting chemical and is a known obesogen and diabetogen. TBT can be detected in human following consumption of contaminated seafood or water. The decrease in muscle strength and quality has been shown to be associated with type 2 diabetes in older adults. However, the adverse effects of TBT on the muscle mass and function still remain unclear. Here, we investigated the effects and molecule mechanisms of low-dose TBT on skeletal muscle regeneration and atrophy/wasting using the cultured skeletal muscle cell and adult mouse models.

The mouse myoblasts (C2C12) and differentiated myotubes were used to assess the in vitro effects of low-dose tributyltin (0.01-0.5μM). The in vivo effects of TBT at the doses of 5 and 25μg/kg/day (n=6/group), which were five times lower than the established no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) and equal to NOAEL, respectively, by oral administration for 4weeks on muscle wasting and muscle regeneration were of phosphorylated FoxO1 in the mouse soleus muscles (5 and 25μg/kg, P>0.05 and P<0.05, respectively, n=6).

This study demonstrates for the first time that low-dose TBT significantly inhibits myogenic differentiation and triggers myotube atrophy in a cell model and significantly decreases muscle regeneration and muscle mass and function in a mouse model. These findings suggest that low-dose TBT exposure may be an environmental risk factor for muscle regeneration inhibition, atrophy/wasting, and disease-related myopathy.
