Weather and air pollution are associated with the exacerbation of respiratory diseases. We investigated patterns of medical care use according to meteorological factors and air pollution in patients with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

We analyzed the medical care utilization patterns of patients with asthma or COPD registered in the Korea Health Insurance Review and Assessment database for the period 2007 to 2013. The patterns were divided into hospitalization and emergency department (ED) use.

The medical care use of patients with asthma or COPD increased when the mean temperature and relative humidity were lower, and the temperature difference and atmospheric pressure were greater. Medical care use increased with the concentrations of particulate matter and ozone. Among age groups, sensitivity to pollutants was greatest in patients aged ≥ 65 years. The effect of being elderly was greater for asthma than for COPD, with a higher hospitalization rate. ED utilization affected by environmental factors was significantly greater for females and hospitalization was significantly more common for males.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is associated with a wide range of gastrointestinal (GI) changes. The University of California-Los Angeles Scleroderma Clinical Trial Consortium Gastrointestinal Tract (UCLA SCTC GIT 2.0) instrument is a self-administered GI assessment instrument for patients with SSc. We developed a Korean version of the UCLA SCTC GIT 2.0 instrument and evaluated its reliability and internal consistency.

The participants were 37 Korean patients with SSc. Translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the UCLA SCTC GIT 2.0 were performed according to international standardized guidelines. We evaluated reproducibility by calculating the intraclass correlation coefficients and assessed the internal consistency of the Korean version of the UCLA SCTC GIT 2.0. We assessed its construct validity by evaluating its correlations with the Short Form Health Survey version 2 and EQ-5D scores by means of Spearman correlation analyses.

Patients with SSc were mostly women (89.19%) with a mean age of 52.2 years, median disease duration of 24 months, and median modified Rodnan total skin score of 4. The median total GIT score on the UCLA SCTC GIT 2.0 was 0.3. The UCLA SCTC GIT 2.0 Korean version showed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α of total GIT score = 0.863). This study was designed to ensiling rice straw by using some additives and assessing its effect on the fermentation, degradability, feed consumption, and digestibility.

Ensiling rice straw using either water (50ml/kg v/w), or molasses plus urea (45 ml + 5g /kg), or whey (55ml/kg v/w) was conducted in this study. Each of these treatments inoculated with three levels of lactic acid bacteria. The best treatments from in-vitro results were used to compare with urea treated rice straw in the digestibility trials. Twelve adult Ossimi rams (average weight =61.4±0.16 kg) randomly distributed on four experimental diets in a 4 x 4 Latin square (3 in each block), each period lasted 28 d.

Added whey or molasses plus urea (MU) showed well properties for ensiled rice straw (ERS), especially with the high level of lactic acid bacteria addition. Accumulative gas production has corresponded with the degradability of OM, NDF, and CP (%). The feed consumption of ERS and palatability increased with the whey or MU as an additive, especially with a high level of lactic acid bacteria. Despite the similarity of the apparent digestibility coefficients of NDF, and ADF for a diet including ERS with lactic bacteria compared that containing 3% urea-treated rice straw (UTRS), the digestibilities of protein, organic matter, and ether extract were significantly higher when emulated to the group fed UTRS. The total digestible nutrients and digestible protein of the groups fed on diets that included any of ERS with whey or MU were superior to a diet contain UTRS.

The objective of the current study was to investigate the effects of dietary hatchery by-products (HBPs) as a replacement of fish meal (FM) on growth performance, relative organ weight, plasma measurements, immune organ index, meat quality, and tibia characteristics of broiler chickens.

A total of 720 broiler chickens (3 d of age) were randomly allotted to 1 of 9 treatments with 8 replicates. Each replicate consisted of 5 male and 5 female birds. The basal diet was formulated to contain 5.0% commercial FM, whereas eight treatment diets were prepared by replacing 25, 50, 75, or 100% of FM in the basal diet with infertile eggs (IFE) or a mixture of various HBPs (MIX); therefore, the inclusion levels of IFE or MIX in the experimental diets were 1.25, 2.50, 3.75, or 5.00%. The diets and water were provided on an ad libitum basis for 32 d.

Increasing inclusion levels of IFE as a replacement of FM in diets had no effects on growth performance, plasma measurements, immune organ index, and tibia characteristics of broiler chickens.
