AIM Providing oral health care to children from infant to toddler age can be achieved by educating and informing parents about their children’s oral health. The aims of this study were to determine the basic knowledge of oral health and to evaluate the efficacy of an infant oral health education programme among parents in Turkey. METHODS Study Design One hundred and fifty parents of infants between 3 and 12 months of age attending the well-baby clinic, Dr. Behcet Uz Children’s Hospital (Izmir, Turkey), participated in the study. A pre-test questionnaire was administered to each parent to assess their infant oral health knowledge. The educational intervention was in the form of a 30-minute interactive explanation of a PowerPoint presentation. The parents completed a post-test after the education in the same session (a questionnaire was administered). RESULTS The range of correct answers on the pre-test was 7–20 of 26 with a mean of 13.7 (SD=2.76). The range of correct answers on the post-test was 12–26 of 26 with a mean of 21.2 (SD=3.34). The difference of correct responses between before and after education was found to be statistically significant (p less then 0.01). CONCLUSION Under the conditions of this study, educational presentation improved parents’ knowledge on infant oral health care and provided anticipatory guidance.AIM This research aims to assess the oral hygiene habits of women in the perinatal period. The study also aims to ascertain the degree of awareness of mothers, or future mothers, about the importance of oral hygiene for themselves and their child. MATERIALS AND METHODS Study design aepidemiological, observational, cross-sectional survey among a group of young women of childbearing age. The group was composed of mothers recruited from kindergartens and pregnant women who went to counseling centers or participated in childbirth courses throughout Italy. RESULTS The sample included 500 women from Central and Northern Italy and 263 from Southern Italy for a total of 763 subjects. Most of them were Italian (87.9%) and just over 50% of them had at least one child (52.7%); 40% were above 35 years old, and 52% were between 25 and 35 years of age. CX-5461 cell line CONCLUSION Young women often underestimate the importance of oral hygiene even before pregnancy, and the impact of oral hygiene lasts throughout gestation and continues after childbirth.BACKGROUND Macrodontia is a rare dental anomaly, and isolated macrodontia is even more infrequent. The aim of this article is to report on a young male patient with macrodontia of the mandibular premolars. CASE REPORT We herein present a case report of a young male patient receiving pharmacological growth hormone therapy for 10 years, who was diagnosed with macrodontia of the mandibular premolars. The patient underwent surgical treatment at the School of Dentistry of the University of Buenos Aires and was followed-up for more than 3 years. CONCLUSION Macrodontia is a rare condition. Early diagnosis and treatment of this anomaly favors adequate formation of the dental arches. In the light of this case report, a review of paediatric patients who received growth hormone therapy during the tooth formation stage would seem relevant.AIM It has been suggested that atypical swallowing (AS) may negatively influence the skeletal and alveolar development, but its specific effects are still unclear. The aim of this work is to compare the cephalometric characteristics of children and adolescents with and without AS. MATERIALS AND METHODS Study design Case-control retrospective cross-sectional study. One hundred patients with (AS group) and 100 patients without AS (control group, C) were retrospectively selected. Their cephalometric data before orthodontic treatment were compared using a 3-way ANOVA variance test to detect any differences between groups considering the type of swallowing (AS vs C); whether or not the second dentition was completed (SDC vs SDNC); and the gender (males-M and females-F). In addition, a Student-t test for unpaired data was carried out to detect differences between M and F within the AS and C groups. RESULTS When compared to the controls, AS patients showed a significantly decreased SNB angle (p less then .01), increased ANB and SN^Go. Me angles (p less then .0001), increased overjet and lower facial height (p less then .01), decreased overbite (p less then .0001), and increased proclination of the upper incisors. AS-SDC patients also showed significantly increased alveolar length. Within the AS and C groups, skeletal and alveolar measurements were larger in males, with higher significance in the C group, suggesting a different trend of growth in AS patients. CONCLUSION AS seems to affect the skeletal growth causing mandibular clockwise rotation, skeletal Class II, open bite and incisor proclination. To compensate for these effects, an increase in alveolar growth together with molar eruption seems to be induced.AIM As the effects of infraocclusion on mandibular growth could have a significant impact on the treatment planning made by the orthodontist, the aim of this study is to evaluate the correlation between infraocclusion and mandibular growth. MATERIALS AND METHODS Study design A total of 42 healthy Caucasian patients with no history of dental trauma or orthodontic treatment were selected for this study from the same paediatric dentistry department. These patients were divided in two groups based on the presence or absence of infraocclusion Group A, 22 patients (12 males and 10 females) suffering from infraocclusion of at least one inferior deciduous molar, and Group B, 20 patients (9 males and 11 females) who did not suffer from infraocclusion but had to be treated for dental overcrowding. Each patient was examined through an orthopantomography scan and lateral cephalogram. All measurements were made before the start of the treatment, and they were analysed in order to show cephalometric correlation between the skeletal class, the vertical dimension and cranio-maxillo-mandibular divergence. RESULTS According to Student's t-test, the only measurements which had a statistically significant difference between Group A and Group B were the SNB angle (p-value less then 0.01), the ANB angle (p-value less then 0.05) and the PC-GO-GN angle (p-value less then 0.05). CONCLUSION From the data collected in this study, it is possible to conclude that patients suffering from infraocclusion of the mandibular deciduous molars show mandibular post-rotation and an increased total Gonial angle, compared to patients who do not suffer from infraocclusion. Despite the absence of a longer-term evaluation of these patients, thanks to this data it is possible to state that early diagnosis of infraocclusion is fundamental in order to apply a well-planned and thought-out orthodontic treatment.
