Evaluating the influence of vitamin D concentrations together with preoperative metabolic phenotypes on remission of chronic noncommunicable diseases (CNCDs) after 6 months of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Cross-sectional analytical study comprising 30 adult individuals who were assessed preoperatively (T0) and 6 months (T1) after undergoing RYGB. Participants were distributed preoperatively into metabolically healthy obese (MHO) and metabolically unhealthy obese (MUHO) individuals according to HOMA-IR classification and to the adequacy and inadequacy of vitamin D concentrations in the form of 25(OH)D. All participants were assessed for anthropometric characteristics, biochemical variables, and presence of CNCDs. The statistical program used was the SPSS version 21. In face of vitamin D adequacy and regardless of the metabolic phenotype classification in the preoperative period, the means found for HOMA-IR allowed us to define them as metabolically healthy 6 months after RYGB. Only those with vitamin D inadequacy with the MUHO phenotype showed better results regarding the reduction of glucose that accompanied the shift in serum 25(OH)D concentrations from deficient to insufficient. It is possible that preoperative vitamin D adequacy, even in the presence of an unhealthy phenotype, may contribute to the reduction of dyslipidemia and improvement in cholesterol. Additionally, the active component of S. maxima was examined in the RPE cells. In vitro, S. maxima decreased BL-induced RPE cell death by inhibiting reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. S. maxima inhibited BL-induced inflammation via regulating the NF-κB pathway, inflammatory-related gene expression, and the apoptosis pathway in RPE cells. In vivo, administration of S. maxima inhibited BL-induced retinal degeneration by restoring the thicknesses of whole retina, ONL (outer nuclear layer), INL (inner nuclear layer), and PL (photoreceptor layer) by BL exposure. Phycocyanin exerted protective effects in the pre-and post-treatment system. Therefore, S. maxima could be a potential nutraceutical approach to intercept the patho-physiological processes leading to dry AMD and advancement to wet AMD. Moreover, phycocyanin was a major active compound of S. maxima. These findings need to be investigated in human studies, particularly through a clinical trial.Due to the physical, psychological, or socioeconomic changes that accompany aging, many people will be affected by geriatric frailty syndrome, which can lead to multimorbidity and premature death. Nutrition counseling is often used to prevent and intervene in frailty syndrome, especially in geriatric rehabilitation. To this end, the consumption behavior of geriatric patients is recorded using paper-based, as well as retrospective memory logs in face-to-face interviews between patients and nutritionists. To simplify this procedure, a digital nutrition diary was developed that is specially adapted to the needs of geriatric patients (>=70 years), enabling them to record their consumption behavior themselves. In an initial study (Study 1), conducted in a geriatric rehabilitation division with twelve subjects (ten male, two female, mean age 79.2 ±5.9 years), feedback about the usability of the digital nutrition diary, and how to improve it, was surveyed. In addition, the usability of an activity tracker and a body composition scale was surveyed to determine whether geriatric patients are generally able to use these devices. In a second study (Study 2), also conducted in the geriatric rehabilitation division, this time with sixteen subjects (ten male, six female, mean age 79.3 ±3.9 years), the usability of the digital nutrition diary was surveyed again to evaluate its modifications based on the feedback from Study 1. In Study 1, the usability rating of the system (0-100) was 82.5 for the activity tracker, 29.71 for the body composition scale, and 51.66 initially for the digital nutrition diary, which increased to 76.41 in Study 2.Objective To assess depression, anxiety, and burnout among health care workers using well-established validated scales and to examine associations of these mental health outcomes with personal protective equipment (PPE) and high-risk patient contact.Methods This prospective survey was conducted between August and October 2020 among 970 essential health care workers from 2 health systems in central Texas. The survey captured basic demographic, occupational, and baseline health information including history of mental health disorders. Depression, anxiety, and burnout were assessed with the 8-item Patient Health Questionnaire, 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, and 23-item Burnout Assessment Tool. Questions about clinical contact with patients with suspected or known COVID-19 were also incorporated.Results Approximately 24% of respondents had moderate or severe anxiety, 14% had moderate or severe depression, and 7% were at high risk for burnout. Statistically significant associations were found between perceived PPE adequacy and the 3 mental health outcomes, while accounting for age, gender, and education. Hours of contact with COVID-19 patients during aerosolizing procedures was positively correlated with measures of anxiety, burnout, and depression after adjustment for age, gender, and occupational role. Perception of PPE adequacy was inversely correlated with measures of depression, anxiety, and burnout among essential members of 2 health care systems, whose roles precluded working remotely during the pandemic.Conclusion This study highlights the correlations of perceptions of PPE adequacy and contact hours with COVID-19 patients undergoing aerosolizing procedures and employee mental well-being. Future work confirming the findings can help identify ways that systems can support their employees through similarly stressful and demanding events.Surface reconstruction of Ni-rich layered oxides (NLO) degrades the cycling stability and safety of high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which challenges typical surface-modification approaches to build a robust interface with electrochemical activity. Here, a strategy of leveraging the low-strain analogues of Li- and Mn-rich layered oxides (LMR) to reconstruct a stable surface on the Ni-rich layered cathodes is proposed. The new surface structure not only consists of a gradient chemical composition but also contains a defect-rich structure regarding the formation of oxygen vacancies and cationic ordering, which can simultaneously facilitate lithium diffusion and stabilize the crystal structure during the (de)lithiation. These features in the NLO lead to a dramatic improvement in electrochemical properties, especially the cyclability under high voltage cycling, exhibiting the 30% increase in capacity retention after 200 cycles at the current density of 1 C (3.0-4.6 V). The findings offer a facile and effective way to regulate defect chemistry and surface structure in parallel on Ni-rich layered structure cathodes to achieve high-energy density LIBs.The development of facial recognition technology has become an increasingly powerful tool in wild animal individual recognition. In this paper, we develop an automatic detection and recognition method with the combinations of body features of big cats based on the deep convolutional neural network (CNN). We collected dataset including 12 244 images from 47 individual Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) at the Siberian Tiger Park by mobile phones and digital camera and 1940 images and videos of 12 individual wild Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) by infrared cameras. First, the single shot multibox detector algorithm is used to perform the automatic detection process of feature regions in each image. For the different feature regions of the image, like face stripe or spots, CNNs and multi-layer perceptron models were applied to automatically identify tiger and leopard individuals, independently. Our results show that the identification accuracy of Amur tiger can reach up to 93.27% for face front, 93.for the individual identification of other wildlife species.Secretory phospholipase A2s (sPLA2s) are found in a wide range of organisms from bacteria to higher plants and animals and are involved in varied and cellular processes. However, roles of these enzymes in microbial pathogens remain unclear. Here, an sPLA2 (BbPLA2) was characterized in the filamentous insect pathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana. BbPLA2 was exclusively expressed in insect hemolymph-derived cells (hyphal bodies), and its expression was induced by insect-derived nutrients and lipids, and nutrient starvation. High levels of secretion of BbPLA2 were observed as well as its distribution in hyphal body lipid drops (LDs). Overexpression of BbPLA2 increased the ability of B. bassiana to utilize insect-derived nutrients and lipids, and promoted LD accumulation, indicating functions for BbPLA2 in mediating LD homeostasis and assimilation of insect-derived lipids. Strains overexpressing BbPLA2 showed moderately increased virulence, including more efficient penetration of the insect cuticle and evasion of host immune responses as compared to the wild type strain. In addition, B. bassiana-activated host immune genes were downregulated in the BbPLA2 overexpression strain, but upregulated by infections with a ΔBbPLA2 strain. These data demonstrate that BbPLA2 contributes to LD homeostasis, assimilation of insect-derived lipids, and repression of host immune responses.
Dental fixtures are commonplace in an aging, radiation treatment population. The current, local standard of practice in particle therapy is to employ treatment geometries to avoid delivery through implanted dental fixtures. The present study aims to observe the physical effect of delivering therapeutic proton beams through common dental fixture materials as prelude to an eventual goal of assessing the feasibility of using treatment geometries not specified for avoidance of oral implants. A sampling of common dental materials was selected based on prosthodontic consult and was evaluated in terms of relative stopping power and three-dimensional (3D) dose perturbation.

Amalgams, porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns consisting of zirconia and non-noble base metals, and lithium disilicate implants were chosen for analysis.
