Pterostilbene is a revesterol analog with a long bioavailability and having potent anti-inflammatory activity in animal studies. In this study, we tried to scrutinize the anti-arthritic effect of pterostilbene against complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced arthritis model in rats. Based on the findings, we can say that pterostilbene has an anti-arthritic effect via suppressing inflammatory responses and altering intestinal bacteria. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Arthritis is the painful disease and affected most of the people worldwide. In this experimental study, we estimated the anti-arthritic effect of pterostilbene against CFA-induced arthritis in rats. Pterostilbene noticeably suppressed the paw thickness, arthritic score, and organ index. Pterostilbene substantially altered the oxidative stress and inflammatory reaction. Pterostilbene considerably modulated the gut microbiota, suggesting the anti-arthritic effect.The choroid plays an important role in various ocular pathologies and retinal blood supply. There is a knowledge gap on how the choroid is affected by systemic and topical medications. Systemic medications that affect microvasculature elsewhere in the body can also affect the microvasculature of the choroid. This review summarizes current knowledge on associations between systemic and topical medications and changes in choroidal thickness (CT). This review included 71 studies on mydriatics/cycloplegics, intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering therapies, antihypertensives, adrenergic antagonists, statins, corticosteroids, hydroxychloroquine, isotretinoin, hormonal contraceptives, phosphodiesterase inhibitors, antipsychotics, antineoplastic agents, ethanol, caffeine and nicotine. IOP-lowering therapies, atropine eye drops, and systemic administration of β blockers and ethanol are associated with a significant increase in CT. Cyclopentolate and phenylephrine are associated with a CT reduction. Systemic medications that decrease CT include caffeine and nicotine. Tropicamide, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, statins, corticosteroids, hydroxychloroquine and hormonal contraceptives have mixed findings. CT increase associated with IOP-lowering therapies is possibly achieved by enhancing aqueous humour flow to the choroid thus elevating choroidal blood flow and thickness. CT changes appear to be independent from systemic blood pressure changes, suggesting that a significant association with an antihypertensive could be due to an idiosyncratic drug property. Statins and candesartan decrease macrophage accumulation and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 expression in the choroid. The choroid and its response to various disease processes and systemic medication can be further investigated to improve patient care, particularly in patients with choroid and retina pathologies.Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused a global pandemic that continues to cause numerous deaths to date. Four vaccines have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as of July 2021 to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Janssen. These vaccines have shown great efficacy and safety profile. One side effect that has been widely reported is post-COVID-19 vaccination lymphadenopathy. Due to the mimicry of the lymphadenopathy for metastases in some oncologic patients, there have been reports of patients who underwent biopsies that showed pathologic confirmation of benign reactive lymphadenopathy secondary to the COVID-19 vaccine. Therefore, understanding the incidence of lymphadenopathy post-COVID-19 vaccinations will help guide radiologists and oncologists in their management of patients, both present oncologic patients, and patients with concerns over their newly presenting lymphadenopathy. A systematic literature search was performed using several databases to identify relevant studies that reported lymphadenopathy post-COVID-19 vaccination. Our results revealed that several cases have been detected in patients undergoing follow-up fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography-computerized tomography scans where lymph nodes ipsilateral to the vaccine injection site show increased uptake of FDG. Thus, knowledge of the incidence of lymphadenopathy may help avoid unnecessary biopsies, interventions, and changes in management for patients, especially oncologic patients who are at risk for malignancies.The phloem enables vascular plants to transport photoassimilates from source tissues to heterotrophic sink tissues. However, our knowledge of this particular protein population is very limited since mature sieve elements are difficult to isolate and not amenable to transcriptomic analysis due to their enucleate nature. Here, we used co-expression analysis and published gene clusters from transcriptomic studies to generate a list of sieve element proteins that potentially survive the enucleation process to reside in mature sieve elements. We selected seven candidates and show that they all localize in sieve elements in Arabidopsis roots and six of them in bolting stems. Our results support the idea that nascent sieve elements prior to enucleation translate part of the protein machinery found in mature sieve elements. Our co-expression list and the publicly available gene clusters expressed in late proto- and meta-phloem sieve elements are valuable resources for uncharacterized genes that may function in mature sieve elements.The Santo André Regional Center from Adolfo Lutz Institute evaluated 91 537 samples by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to detect severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) from March 2020 to April 2021. The age, sex, and race of patients from three cities in southeastern Brazil, namely São Bernardo do Campo (SBC), Diadema, and Mauá were assessed in association to the rate of positive results using generalized linear models. Circulating lineages were obtained from GISAID and intralineage genetic variation was investigated employing Lasergene software. A declining number of reported cases around October to November 2020 separate two epidemic waves in the three cities. Mauá differed by the highest positive RT-PCR scores in January and February. The article will be beneficial to both scientists and the general public who are interested in the role of vitamins and minerals in ameliorating COVID-19.In tropical dry forests, both the dry and the short rainy seasons have become increasingly irregular. This study replicated these conditions to investigate the effects of two water deficit cycles on Cenostigma microphyllum seedlings. Impacts were assessed by measuring growth traits, water relations, gas exchange, and dynamics of nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) content in the whole plant under greenhouse conditions in potted plants. In the first water deficit cycle, the leaf relative water content (RWC) was maintained at the expense of a rapid drop in gas exchange. Furthermore, there was a slight accumulation of NSC, mainly soluble sugars (SS) in the stem wood and roots, to the detriment of height and stem diameter growth. In the second cycle, the leaf RWC remained 40% higher than the lowest level measured in the first water deficit, and CO2 assimilation remained twice as long in previously stressed plants. The SS content of the stems and roots was strongly correlated with the predawn leaf RWC. No strong reduction was observed in the bark stock even with the gradual increase of SS in the wood.
