The aim of this study is to explore how potentially traumatic events (PTEs) from war and flight influence health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in young refugees after recent resettlement. In a model based on earlier theory, we tested if post-migration stressors and mental distress mediated the effect of PTEs on HRQoL, individually and in serial. We also explored how different types of post-migration stressors influenced different dimensions of HRQoL.

This study used a cross-sectional design where 160 Syrian youth recently resettled in Norway completed questionnaires at school between May and December 2018. Correlations between types of post-migration stressors and dimensions of HRQoL were explored and a serial multiple mediator model was tested. Models were adjusted for age and gender, using two types of mental distress; post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and general mental distress.

Higher levels of PTEs reduced experienced HRQoL, but this direct effect was mediated by post-migration stressors alone and in serial with mental distress. Despite high levels of mental distress, this did not affect HRQoL independently, only in serial mediation with increased post-migration stressors. Economic concerns and discrimination were types of post-migration stressors affecting several dimensions of HRQoL.

Such protein aggregations trigger activation of immune mechanisms in neuronal and glial, mainly M1-type microglia cells, leading to release of pro-inflammatory mediators, and subsequent neuronal dysfunction and apoptosis. Despite the described neurotoxic features for glial cells, recruitment of peripheral leukocytes to the brain and their conversion to neuroprotective M2-type microglia can mitigate neurodegeneration by clearing extracellular protein accumulations or residues. Based on these observations, it was speculated that Dendritic cell (DC)-based vaccination, by making use of DCs as natural adjuvants, could be used for treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. DCs potentiated by disease-specific antigens can also enhance T helper 2 (Th2)-specific immune response and by production of specific antibodies contribute to clearance of intracellular aggregations, as well as enhancing regulatory T cell response. Thus, enhancement of immune response by DC vaccine therapy can potentially augment glial polarization into the neuroprotective phenotype, enhance antibody production, and at the same time balance neuronal cells' repair, renewal, and protection. The characteristic feature of this method of treatment is to maintain the equilibrium in the immune response rather than targeting a single mediator in the disease and their application in other neurodegenerative diseases should be addressed. However, the safety of these methods should be investigated by clinical trials.Glioma is one of the most common neurological malignancies worldwide. Delta-like ligand 3 (DLL3), an inhibitory ligand-driven activation of the Notch pathway, has been shown to be significantly associated with overall survival in patients with glioma. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether DLL3 as a biomarker in glioma is associated with patients' clinicopathological features and prognosis. We identified differences in transcriptome and promoter methylation in the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) in patients with malignant glioma with shorter (less than 1 year) and longer (greater than 3 years) survival time. Further analysis of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) revealed that four genes (DLL3, TSPAN15, RTN1, PAK7) are highly associated with patient prognosis and play an indispensable role in evolution. We chose the expression level of DLL3 in glioma patients for our study. Patients were divided into groups with low and high expression of DLL3 according to the cutoff values obtained, and Kaplan-Meier and Cox analysis were used to examine the correlation between DLL3 gene expression and patient survival. We then performed a gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) to identify significantly enriched signaling pathways. Our results confirmed that the overall survival of patients with low DLL3 expression was significantly shorter than that of patients with high DLL3 expression. Ceralasertib GSEA showed that the signaling pathways of the immune process and immune response, among others, were enhanced with the DLL3 low-expression phenotype. Collectively, our findings signify that DLL3 is a potent prognostic factor for glioma, which can provide a viable approach for glioma prognostic assessment and valuable insights for anti-tumor immune-targeted therapies.Aging is an inevitable process that negatively affects all living organisms and their vital functions. The brain is one of the most important organs in living beings and is primarily impacted by aging. The molecular mechanisms of learning, memory and cognition are altered over time, and the impairment in these mechanisms can lead to neurodegenerative diseases. Transcriptomics can be used to study these impairments to acquire more detailed information on the affected molecular mechanisms. Here we analyzed learning- and memory-related transcriptome data by mapping it on the organism-specific protein-protein interactome network. Subnetwork discovery algorithms were applied to discover highly dysregulated subnetworks, which were complemented with co-expression-based interactions. The functional analysis shows that the identified subnetworks are enriched with genes having roles in synaptic plasticity, gliogenesis, neurogenesis and cognition, which are reported to be related to memory and learning. With a detailed analysis, we show that the results from different subnetwork discovery algorithms or from different transcriptomic datasets can be successfully reconciled, leading to a memory-learning network that sheds light on the molecular mechanisms behind aging and memory-related impairments.

To assess the ability of paediatric dentists to detect and diagnose Traumatic Dental Injuries (TDI) using two different imaging modalities, intraoral radiographs (2D) and CBCT scans (3D). In addition, observer's confidence regarding the obtained diagnosis, using either technique, was assessed.

Both 2D and 3D images of 20 dental trauma cases in children were presented in random order to a panel of thirteen paediatric dentists. Observers received instructions for the screening of the images for radiographic findings related to dental trauma, using structured scoring sheets for 2D and 3D images. Observed data were compared to those recorded by two experienced benchmark observers. A ten-point scale was used for assessing observer's confidence regarding their final diagnosis using 2D versus 3D images.

Performance of individual observers showed wide variation. Statistical significance was reached for correctly detected and correctly diagnosed findings (p = 0.02), in favor of 3D. link2 Most of the observers reported comparable confidence using 2D and 3D, two observers were more confident using 3D and one observer was more confident using 2D.

These difficulties demand new strategies for effective eradication of biofilms from both biological and inert surfaces. In this study, polymeric micelles comprised of di-block polymer, poly-(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate and poly 2-(N,N-diethylamino) ethyl methacrylate polymer, P(PEGMA-b-DEAEMA), were observed to exhibit remarkable inhibitory effects on hyphal growth of Candida albicans (C. albicans) and C. tropicalis, thus preventing biofilm formation and removing existing biofilms. P(PEGMA-b-DEAEMA) micelles showed biofilm removal efficacy of > 40% and a 1.4-log reduction in cell viability of C. albicans in its single-species biofilms. In addition, micelles alone promoted high removal percentage in a mixed biofilm of C. albicans and C. tropicalis (~ 70%) and remarkably reduced cell viability of both strains. Co-delivery of fluconazole (Flu) and amphotericin B (AmB) with micelles showed synergistic effects on C. albicans biofilms (3-log reduction for AmB and 2.2-log reduction for Flu). Similar effects were noted on C. albicans planktonic cells when treated with the micellar system combined with AmB but not with Flu. Moreover, micelle-drug combinations showed an enhancement in the antibiofilm activity of Flu and AmB against dual-species biofilms. Furthermore, in vivo studies using Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes revealed no obvious toxicity of the micelles.
