What to Look For in a Double Travel Buggy

Size

Double pushchairs tend to be more spacious than single ones, particularly when they are side-by-side buggies like the Kolcraft Geo 3 or UPPAbaby. The good news is that this extra width enables them to accommodate heavier children without straining the chassis. They also have other key features that make them stand out, including spacious pop-out canopies that come with SPF 50 and windows that peek out and swivel lock front wheels which help navigate narrow spots like shopping aisles cups with a single parent holder, a smart fold mechanism that is able to be completed one-handed; and 10-inch back wheels that aren't made for tough terrain but handle city streets and theme parks quite well.

Weight

The lighter the double buggy, the easier it is to move and lift. The Joie Evalite Duo, which is the most lightweight of our Lab tests, is an excellent option if weight is an issue. It's got plenty of features including a large pop-out canopy with SPF50 and peekaboo window and a quick-release folding system that can be folded flat in seconds with four-wheel suspension to handle rough terrain and a swivel wheels at the front that allows you to maneuver tight shops and supermarket aisles. Just over PS1,000, it's also a super-affordable stroller. It can also carry twins or a baby and toddler with the purchase of an additional'sidepack'.

Flexibility

A double buggy is a great option for parents with twins or even a toddler and baby. Narrow tandem buggies are a great way to squeeze through small spaces. Side-by-side models let you to keep the track of your children and ensure their safety while you go to the supermarket or park. They also come with a wide range of seat configurations, so you can adapt the seat as your children develop, and some have the option to add a ride-on or car seat.


The Joie Evalite duo is a perfect example. It can fit two seats or a car seat and its adaptors that are easy to use permit you to switch from a single seat to a double in a matter of seconds. It also has a nice-sized pop-out UPF 50+ sunshade canopy, adjustable leg rests and peekaboo windows on both seats as well as the standing fold is quick and easy to do with just one hand; and a premium suspension that makes light work of rough terrain.

The iCandy Peach tri-fold buggy is another alternative. Their slim frames are perfect for negotiating narrow aisles and doors and they can comfortably accommodate twins or a baby and an adult due to the addition of UPPAbaby's "PiggyBack' board (which you can purchase separately). The basket is generous and comes with all the extras including liners and raincovers.

Tandem buggies typically have your children seated together, which can make them easier to push and more sturdy on uneven surfaces, however they can be difficult to maneuver between kerbs. They typically have a bigger footprint than a single-seater pushchair, and can be a bit long for getting through doorways.

Comfort

This is among the most comfortable lightweight doubles that we have tested. It has a stadium-style seat on both seats, so your children can take in the view. It also has an enormous UPF 50+ canopy that has a windows that peek out, a padded toddler seat with an add-on RumbleSeat that has built-in adjustable leg and foot rests as well as a cup holder for a single parent. Testers love how the seats recline individually by squeezing a lever under each seat, and say that the straps are simple to secure and remove using just one hand. The handle is simple to turn making it easy to fold. It can also be put away with the backrest up for easy access.

With double travel buggy (it'll accommodate twins, a baby and toddler or three kids if you add the option of a 'PiggyBack' board) it's a great choice for families who want the flexibility to grow with their child. Its large shopping basket and soft suspension make it suitable on roads and in cities too. It's also reasonably priced. BabyGearLab recommends it to children between the ages of 6 and 6.
