Buying a Double Buggy From Birth
When you are deciding on the perfect double buggy, there are a lot of aspects to consider. We spoke with Fourth Trimester postnatal retreat expert Katie Billingsley for her advice on everything from seating options to age ranges to folding mechanisms and storage space.
A must-have investment for families with active children, this buggy grows with your family from twins to toddlers. It's lightweight, has great maneuverability and can handle uneven terrain easily.
What kind of buggy do you prefer?
A double buggy is great for transporting two children, but not necessarily of the same age, side by side. They can also serve as prams and have the ability to recline within each seat, allowing your children can lay down in various positions. A lot of them have plenty of storage space to store everything from drinks and snacks to wipes and nappies. They are often lightweight, fold easily, and compact enough to fit into the car boot. If you drive a lot it's worth checking the buggy is easy to manoeuvre with the folded wheels and also to get out and back into your car boot.
You might have seen this kind of double buggy on other moms strollers or even in one as a kid. These are great for older siblings who want to keep up with you or for twins. They usually have a large number of seating options (including "cinema" seats) for your children to choose from. They are generally easy to control, and if choose a model with a soft suspension, they are able to effortlessly handle the kerbs.
Tandem buggies are another popular option since they're more maneuverable than a side-by-side. The second seat is located behind the first, rather than on top. They're usually bigger than a side-byside and can be bulky when folded, which is why it's essential to make sure they be able to pass through doors and public transport. They can be used to transport twins or a toddler and baby or three kids with the inclusion of a buggy board.
Lastly there are the'single-to-double' convertibles which can be used as a single pushchair from birth then convert to a double by attaching a second seat, carrycot or car seat to their clever frame. They're more expensive than tandem buggies and side-by-side buggies, however they provide plenty of flexibility and come with a premium selling price. They are easy to steer and come with large storage bins. They are also able to handle uneven surfaces. Some have a built in ride-on board for older children and 'cinema chairs'.
Do you have twins?
If your children are twins or siblings of different age groups, a double buggie is the best option to transport them around. There are two main types of double buggy - side-byside buggies that let your children are seated in a row, side-by-side, and tandem buggies where one baby is above the other. Both buggies can accommodate two fixed seats. However, side-by-side buggies are narrower to be able to pass through doors. Tandems are generally wider in general. They can also be able to accommodate an infant seat and a carrycot.
Do you have a child?
A younger sibling can feel like an enormous responsibility at first, especially when you need to be attentive to the infant. They might be a bit irritated when they are in a baby carrier while you push the older sibling ahead and having a double buggy right from the beginning can make things simpler. It can also give your child the feeling of pride that comes with knowing that they get to be 'big brother or sister' and help them get used to their role.
read what he said -by-side double buggies are usually considered the best option for twins as they allow both children to have the same view, but they can be hefty and heavy. The Leclerc B-AGILE DUAL is a sleek double buggy with a unique frame which expands widthways and can accommodate two seats fixed. It also comes with a variety of configuration options such as using the second seat for the bassinet.
We recommend the Mountain Buggy Double Trailblazer to families who love to explore. This clever buggy is a single pushchair that can be converted into double by adding a second seat or carrycot (depending on the model). Its smooth ride is ideal for rough terrain, and it comes with many thoughtful features that will keep everyone happy.
Do you require a travel system?
Double buggies are an excellent way to transport your children in a comfortable way. However they aren't required for every family. You might be able to make do with a single stroller, and some attachments like baby carriers and toddler straps that permit your child and you to ride on their backs or in front.
There are three types of double buggies: tandem, side-by-side and convertible. Side-by-side buggies come with two seats next to each other, which means your children will be able see each one another. double buggy for twins are wider than a single stroller and can be difficult to maneuver through the kerbs. Tandem buggies are a more compact alternative, with a seat in the front and a second in the rear, however they can still be long and heavy to push.
Convertible double buggies permit you to transform one stroller into double buggy by attaching the bassinet or infant car seat to the frame. It is possible to keep your baby in the car seat until she is ready to move to the buggy seat. The UPPAbaby V2 is a good example - it can be used with twins, a toddler and a baby or even three children using the option of a PiggyBack Board.
If your children have grown older and have more stamina, a double buggy can be used to accompany them on bicycle rides or day trips where they might prefer walking. It's important to keep in mind that your children might not always like to be in a stroller and might become tired and disgruntled when they are on longer excursions.
Before you purchase a double stroller, think about the above factors and your family's specific circumstances. A reliable and sturdy double buggy will make life easier, particularly when you are required to navigate through busy streets or busy malls.
