You can create the bot by plugging it into its base and then connecting it to your home Wi Fi network. The Neato app will guide you through the initial configuration (linking the D4 to Wi-Fi and naming it and so on, etc.). Once lidar robot vacuum and mop is fully charged it's possible to start cleaning.

Once the D4 is operational it allows you to create a schedule automatically or manually at any point. You can also control it with your voice using Google Home or Amazon Alexa. If you own an Apple Watch you can start a cleaning session by tapping your wrist.


This model performed well in our tests on both carpeted and hard flooring, accumulating 91.3 percent of debris from serpentine paths. However it's not as effective in corner and edge cleaning as the more expensive models. Its side sensors keep the D4 about 1.5 inches from walls. It also lacks the side-sweeping brush found on all but cheapest robotic cleaners. The raised turret means it isn't able to fit under low clearance furniture. It does, however, support virtual No-Go Lines so you can draw lines on your floor plan to tell the D4 not to go there. Its battery life of 75 minutes is also average. This is an acceptable price for the convenience offered by this model.

2. iRobot Roomba 990

The iRobot Roomba is the flagship robot from the company, with top performance and a host of connected features. The 980 is priced at $899/PS899 but it's typically cheaper if you shop on the internet (John Lewis or Amazon US are both good places to start).

The 980 is the most sophisticated of our top picks. It has a HEPA-filter that is able to capture dust particles and allergens, which can improve the air quality in your house. It also supports a wide variety of floor surfaces such as tile and hardwood.

The 980's top mounted camera, SLAM sensor and ability to navigate in tight spaces such as hallways and corners is among its most enticing features. iRobot refers to this technology as iAdapt 2.0 and it utilizes images taken by the camera to create an internal map. This allows the 980 to keep track of its location so that it doesn't waste cleaning time on areas that it has already cleaned.

iRobot has also introduced new capabilities that are smarter than ever, like a spot-cleaning feature that lets you designate the area of your home as being off limits to the 980. This was not the most advanced or the largest that we tested, however it was effective and a welcome feature. The 980 can also be controlled with voice commands via Alexa or Google Assistant. The robot may take several minutes to complete an instruction.

The Roomba can return to its base station when it's finished cleaning, making sure it's always ready for the next adventure. This feature is only available to the 980 and makes the robot more user-friendly.

3. iRobot 985

iRobot Roomba is designed by iRobot to make your floors cleaner, more beautiful and more powerful with its powerful cleaning system, smart navigation and smart integration with other iRobot devices. Its unique dirt detection system alerts you of areas that require more attention. Smart sensors help keep it away from dangers and stairs. It also recharges automatically and continue cleaning until the job has been completed. Its intelligent mapping and vSLAM technology lets it navigate an entire level of your home, while keeping an eye on where it's been and what rooms it's yet to clean.

Its low profile helps it move under furniture and other items where dust, pet hair, and dirt often hide. Contrary to many robot vacuums it can also sweep dirt from corners and along edges. It's also easy to schedule cleaning sessions from anywhere with the iRobot app, or even your voice with Alexa and Google Assistant.

The iRobot Roomba 985 is powered by lithium-ion batteries of top quality. They charge faster and last for longer than other brands. The battery comes with 12 months of warranty and is guaranteed to function under normal operating conditions. Its high impact ABS and polycarbonate plastic construction offers the strength. Its gold contacts that resist welding and durable circuitry guarantee long-term reliability.

4. iRobot Roomba 990

The latest iRobot robot offers the best obstacle avoidance of any Roomba we've tested thanks to its front-facing camera and laser sensor. This makes it able to avoid wires and pet feces better than other robotic vacuums we've reviewed, such as the EcovacsN8Pro, Roborock S6MaxV and many others.

It's also iRobot's strongest vacuum, capable of taking on dirt with more granular debris and more pet hair unlike other mid-range models such as the Roomba 960. This is due to the fact that the cleaner comes with larger brushes that rotate counter-clockwise, and an engine that has more suction power.

The Roomba 995 is also iRobot's most affordable vacuum that has recharge and resume features, but it doesn't have the auto-empty system that both the I6+ and I7 offer. It also doesn't have iAdapt 2.0 navigation and the camera that the I7 employs to identify objects and avoid obstacles. This means it can't save maps or use in-app containment features like no-go zones.

Another drawback is that the iRobot 995 does not include mopping capabilities. While this isn't an issue if you only want a top-notch vacuum, it's a major disadvantage for anyone who wants to use hybrid robots.

The Combo J7+ is another iRobot that is equipped with automatic empty. It can vacuum and mop. It's got the same navigation system as the I6+ or I7, however, it doesn't have iAdapt 2.0. It isn't able to save any maps, and doesn't provide the same in-app containment options like the I7 or S9. The Combo J7+ does, however have improved automation thanks to iRobot Genius and can learn your habits for cleaning and plan cleaning schedules automatically. It also has a bigger dust bin than the I6+ and I7 which can hold 2.5 liters of debris which is more than enough to last 60 days.

5. iRobot Roomba 960

The 960 is a less costly alternative to the 980. It has the same performance, but in a smaller size. It's still fantastic on bare floors and carpeted rooms, picking up food dust, dirt tracked in and pieces of torn paper with ease. It's also adept at navigating and avoiding obstructions. It also does a great job cleaning embedded dirt.

This robot uses iAdapt navigation 2.0 to track its location. This allows it to move around the area efficiently and avoid getting trapped. The top-mounted camera and SLAM combine to allow it to see the floor and objects, which lets it easily avoid furniture legs and other obstacles. It even has an angled profile that lets it go under tables and couches. It is also able to recharge at its dock if it is needed.

While it lacks some advanced features like map-saving and selective room cleaning, the 960's navigation is superior to other robots. It also has a larger dust bin than the 690.

You can control the 960 using the iRobot HOME app for iOS and Android, which provides various automation options including setting up cleaning preferences and a schedule, triggering spot-cleans, and monitoring the battery status. You can also check the location of the vac and be notified when the dirt compartment is full. The 960 can also be used to answer voice commands using Alexa and Google Assistant. The iRobot Roomba 960 is an excellent choice for most households. It's well-made, incurs fewer recurring costs, has a larger dirt compartment, and charges more quickly than the more expensive RoboVac 11. But if you're looking for an inexpensive option that offers similar performance on bare floors and carpets look into the Neato Botvac D7.
