YouTube Introduces New Tool to Track AI Videos
YouTube has a new tool to track videos made with artificial intelligence (AI). These AI videos are becoming more common and more realistic. YouTube now asks creators to tell when they use AI to make videos. But some experts say this might not be enough.
Ben Colman, who used to work for Google, compares this to asking a bank robber if they plan to rob a bank. He says most people are honest, but with so many tools to make fake videos and voices, just asking people to tell the truth may not work.
Colman now runs a company called Reality Defenders. He recently worked with Wired magazine to find AI-made videos on YouTube aimed at children. One such video, made by a company in India, has over a million subscribers and was posted before the new rules.
Dominic Sellitto, a professor at the University of Buffalo, thinks creators might not tell the truth if it hurts their video's performance on YouTube. He says creators might take the risk because they think nothing bad will happen.
YouTube told NPR that creators who don’t follow the rules could face penalties like suspension or content removal. YouTube may also label some videos as synthetic by itself. Sellitto compares this to how YouTube quickly removes videos that break copyright rules.
Sellitto believes AI can be used to make amazing and cool things, but he says companies need more than just trust to manage the dangers of AI videos.

Record Number of New Cancer Cases Expected in 2024
A new report from the American Cancer Society says there will be more than 2 million new cancer cases in 2024. This is the first time the number has gone over 2 million. Dr. Bill Dahut, the chief scientific officer for the Cancer Prevention Group, shared this news.
The report also shows that cancer is now being found more often in people between the ages of 55 and 64. Before, most cancer cases were in people over 65. Colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer deaths among men under 50. For women under 50, it is the second leading cause, after breast cancer.
Dr. Dahut says it is not clear why more younger people are getting cancer. He thinks it might be related to the environment or to obesity, but more research is needed to understand this.
Young people with cancer often have problems getting treatment. They might not have health insurance, or they might have family duties that make it hard to go to the doctor. Dr. Dahut says early screening is very important. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, you should start screening ten years before the age your family member was found to have cancer. For example, if a family member was found to have cancer at age 43, you should start screening at age 33.
There is some good news. The overall cancer death rate in the U.S. is going down. This is because of better screenings, fewer people smoking, and better treatments.
Dr. Dahut advises people to follow screening guidelines and start early if they have a higher risk. It's important to talk to your doctor about your family's cancer history and find out when you should start screenings.
