Wicked 2024 - First Looks at the Wicked 2024 Elphaba Black Coat
On Wednesday, the first trailer for the highly-anticipated movie adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked dropped. The footage, shown only to CinemaCon attendees, shows Elphaba arriving at Shiv University and her early interactions with Glinda, including a not-so-warm welcome from the good witch and an offer of her iconic black pointy hat. The movie, directed by John Chu, opens November 27.
The official Instagram for the film shared two images, wide-shot shots that showcase the actors in their roles. In the photo featuring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, her black cape flaps open and a hint of green skin is visible in the shadows. She also has a broom in her hand and her signature green pointy hat on her head. The image is captioned “Wicked: Part 1.”
In a second image, Ariana Grande can be seen climbing stairs dressed in her pink ball gown and looking, well, a lot like Glinda should. The outfit is a rework of Tony Award-winning costume designer Susan Hilferty’s original design, which was inspired by a 1950s Dior gown and Princess Diana’s wedding dress. It was controversial when it debuted in the stage production because of how close it looked to the gown worn by Dorothy’s character in the Wizard of Oz.
Both actresses look stunning, but it’s the hair and makeup that has people talking. In the photos, Elphaba’s long black hair falls around her shoulders and is pulled back, while Glinda has blond locks that are pulled back from her face. The movie’s official Instagram also notes that there is a lot of touch-up work on the actresses’ faces, which will show how their characters develop over the course of the two-part film.
As for the costumes, the official Instagram has a close-up of Elphaba’s signature bubble dress and notes that its colors are “deeply symbolic.” The purple hues reflect earth tones and gems and are designed to convey the idea that Elphaba is rooted in tradition, while the blue stripes symbolize her strength.
It’s a bold move for the movie, which is already causing waves for its diversity. With Broadway’s first Black Glinda and a black Fiyero, as well as Chu’s casting of Marissa Bode as Nessarose and Ethan Slater as Boq, the new movie will have a diverse cast that looks more closely like the actual Wizard of Oz than ever before.
