A wood chipper, also known as a tree chipper, is a machine designed to reduce tree limbs or trunks into smaller wood chips. These machines are often portable, mounted on wheels for easy towing behind trucks or vans. They typically run on internal combustion engines ranging from 3 to 1,000 horsepower. Some high-powered models are mounted on trucks and come with their own engines, often equipped with a hydraulic winch for added functionality.

The traditional design of a wood chipper involves a steel disk with mounted blades that serves as the chipping mechanism. This technology was invented by German Heinrich Wigger, who patented it in 1922. In this setup, hydraulically powered wheels draw wood from the hopper towards the disk, positioned perpendicularly to the incoming material. As the motor spins the disk, the blades slice the wood into chips, which are then ejected through a chute by flanges on the disk's edges.

Drum chippers operate using a different mechanism, involving a large steel drum powered by a motor. The drum, mounted parallel to the hopper, spins towards the chute. Blades on the drum's surface cut the wood into chips and propel them out through the discharge chute. Commercial-grade drum chippers can handle material diameters ranging from 25 to 60 cm.

Conventional drum chippers, often referred to as "chuck-and-duck" chippers, use the drum itself to feed the material, pulling it through rapidly as it is chipped. However, these machines have notable safety risks and operational drawbacks. Consequently, they have largely been replaced by hydraulically-fed drum chippers. These modern chippers use hydraulically powered wheels to control the feed rate of the material into the drum, enhancing both safety and efficiency.
