Social media addiction is a behavioural addiction that is characterised as being overly concerned about social media, driven by an uncontrollable urge to log on to and devoting so much time and effort on social media that it drags one from important areas in life. This extracts framework for defining social media as a communicative genre. The writer seems to feel like social media is a bad way of tackling a day. The writer further more describes that social media has a way of affecting one’s schoolwork and sleeping schedule which could lead to low grades and lack of rest. There are two types of linguistic features being used such as tense and imagery. Future tense has been used in the last line of the extract, quoting “I’ll be proud of you” the mother mentions that she will be proud of her daughter but she also expects her daughter to take positive action, before her mother is able to be proud. Imagery is being used throughout the extract because it is being mentioned how bad social media can affect the child’s schoolwork and sleeping schedule, which gives us an image and idea of how bad her assignment marks look and how tired and slumpy the child could be. This extract’s visual feature falls under a dialogue, which is a conversation held between two individuals. In conclusion social media has a negative impact on one’s life but it could have a positive impact, depending on how it is being used.
