What Causes Anxiety Disorders?
People suffering from anxiety disorders experience feelings of fear and concern that are insignificant to the actual risk. They may also experience physical symptoms such as a rapid heart rate, sweating or shortness of breath.
There are two types of treatment for anxiety disorders, medication and psychotherapy (also known as talk therapy). Each has its own benefits.
Genetics
Genetics is a major contributor to anxiety disorders. People with a history of anxiety in their family are at a higher risk of developing this disorder. It is also evident that genetics can cause anxiety to flare up in certain circumstances and increase the likelihood to experiencing symptoms of the condition. Scientists continue to identify the genes that trigger anxiety. They hope to find a way that will prevent anxiety disorders in people with particular genetic traits.
Anxiety can run in families, and people with close relatives who have experienced anxiety tend to develop it themselves. Genetic studies of identical pairs of twins have demonstrated that there is a link between anxiety disorders and genes. One of the most significant findings in genetic research on anxiety was the discovery that chromosome duplication is linked to a higher chance of suffering from anxiety disorders and panic attacks.
Researchers have a clear understanding of the role genetics plays in anxiety. However, it's important to remember that environmental factors can also cause anxiety. This is the case for those with a family history of anxiety and those who do not. Certain studies have demonstrated that people who go through traumatizing events or suffer from chronic stress or other mental health problems are more likely to experience anxiety.
Numerous gene-based association (GWAS) studies have shown a significant heritability of anxiety disorders, both current and past, as well as traits related to these disorders. The vast majority of loci associated with anxiety have not yet been discovered. Future GWAS require deeper and more systematized phenotyping in order to identify the specific mechanisms that connect genotype to the phenotype. It is essential to determine if there are gender differences in susceptibility for anxiety, and to differentiate between disorder-specific loci and those that are pleiotropic and can affect the phenotypes of anxiety in a variety of ways. In addition, more diversity in study samples is needed to determine and replicate the majority of genes that affect anxiety. These are the major barriers to research in anxiety genomes.
Environmental stress
People with anxiety disorders feel intense fear and worry which is in proportion to their situation. This can cause a lot of distress and have a negative effect on their life including work, family and social activities. It is not known what causes anxiety disorders, but there are many factors that may be involved. Genetic factors as well as brain chemistry, life experiences, and environmental stressors are all possible causes. Certain medical ailments and medications could contribute to anxiety.
Anxiety can be more prevalent in people who inherit traits such as being shy or nervous. Genes can affect the way brain chemicals that control fear and emotions work. If these chemicals aren't functioning well, anxiety disorders may develop. People who have a parent who suffers from anxiety disorders are also at risk.
Anxiety disorders can be caused by stressful or negative life events such as the death or illness of a loved-one. If the feelings don't ease, it is recommended to seek medical assistance.
The exposure to harmful substances, such as chemical exposure or pollution, is associated with increased levels of anxiety. Some medical conditions, like thyroid issues, can increase your risk of developing anxiety disorders.
There are a myriad of ways to treat anxiety disorders, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which teaches different ways of thinking and behaving. CBT can help you understand how to handle situations that trigger anxiety, and conquer your anxiety. It can help you manage your anxieties and reduce the amount of time you devote to them. CBT can be paired with other therapies, like mindfulness meditation or group support groups.
It is crucial to choose the treatment that is suitable for you. It is usually best to combine treatments such as psychotherapy, medication, and self-help. If you are a member of a family with a history of anxiety, make sure you share this information with your physician. This can help them recognize anxiety-related symptoms and treat them quickly. Avoiding things that trigger anxiety symptoms is essential. For example avoid places where you've had bad experiences in the past.
Mental health issues
Every person experiences anxiety from time to time. It's the brain's reaction to stress, and also a sign of danger. But when anxiety becomes chronic and overwhelming, it becomes a problem with day-to-day life. It's important to consult a doctor and get an evaluation.
People who have anxiety disorders typically have other mental health issues, too. Anxiety symptoms can manifest in people with bipolar or depression. People with certain physical health problems, such as heart disease or diabetes are also at risk of experiencing anxiety. People who have suffered trauma or abuse have a greater chance of developing anxiety, also known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
There are many different types of medications that can reduce anxiety symptoms. It is important to discuss your options with your physician. Different types of anxiety are treated better with different drugs.
SSRIs and SNRIs are commonly used to treat anxiety. They include citalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac) and duloxetine (Cymbalta). Antidepressants in a different class, tricyclic antidepressants, also aid in anxiety. They include imipramine and clomipramine.
Certain herbal supplements, prescription drugs, and illicit substances can exacerbate anxiety symptoms. People with anxiety disorders should stay away from caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine.
Talk therapy - also known as psychotherapy can aid those suffering from anxiety. It is typically conducted in small groups and focuses on dealing with your anxiety. It can also help you change the habits that contribute to your anxiety, like avoiding stressful situations. You can also try other complementary treatments like mindfulness meditation and yoga. Many people with anxiety find relief through these methods. If your anxiety doesn't improve, you may have to talk with a psychologist or psychiatrist to get help.
Substance abuse
Everyone experiences anxiety at times, but a true anxiety disorder is one that causes constant anxiety and fear that causes problems in daily life. Anxiety is typically triggered by a particular occasion or event like an interview or public speech, however for certain people, it can be persistent and even debilitating. People who have a co-occurring drug addiction and anxiety disorder should seek out professional help. A dual diagnosis treatment center can offer the assistance and treatment needed to recover.
Substance abuse can mask symptoms of anxiety and make it difficult to diagnose. Certain drugs and alcohols can cause symptoms similar to anxiety, including nervousness, restlessness, agitation and anger. Symptoms also flare up during withdrawal. It isn't always easy to determine whether a person's anxiety disorder and substance abuse disorder are interconnected.
Some substances can actually cause anxiety, particularly stimulants such as cocaine or prescription medications used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). These medications increase activity in certain brain regions that are linked to anxiety and depression. In time, users may develop a permanent state of anxiety. This can be exacerbated by stopping the drug or experiencing withdrawal.
Research has shown that around 20 percent of people diagnosed with an anxiety disorder suffer from a substance use disorder according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. Health issues, financial difficulties relationships, and other stressors are typically related to substance abuse. The severity of the anxiety disorder and addiction can complicate the treatment process, but it's vital to deal with both issues simultaneously.
panic anxiety disorder is possible to conquer both anxiety and addiction simultaneously. It's important to find an addiction treatment center that can provide the best combination of therapies for each individual. Click on a pin to find out more about a facility close to you that has a dual diagnosis. The earlier you seek treatment the greater your chance of being successful in treating addiction and anxiety.
