Kemal Tahir 15 Nisan 1910 tarihinde İstanbul da doğmuştur. Kemal Tahir in asıl adı İsmail Kemalettin Demirdir. Kendisi babasının deniz subayı olması sebebiyle ilköğrenimini çeşitli yerlerde tamamlamıştır. 1923 yılında Cezayirli Hasan Paşa Ortaokulundan mezun olmuştur. Kendisi Galatasaray Lisesi 10 uncu sınıftayken öğrenimini yarıda bırakmıştır. Avukat kâtipliği, Zonguldak Kömür İşletmelerinde ambar memurluğu gibi çeşitli görevlerde bulunan Kemal Tahir İstanbul’da Vakit, Haber, Son Posta gazetelerinde düzeltmenlik, röportaj yazarlığı, çevirmenlik işleriyle de meşgul olmuştur. 1938 yılında Nâzım Hikmet ile birlikte Donanma Komutanlığı Askeri Mahkemesinde askeri isyana teşvik suçlamasıyla yargılanmış ve 15 yıl hapis cezası almıştır. Kemal Tahir Çeşitli illerde cezaevinde yatmıştır. 12 yıl sonra 1950 yılında özgürlüğüne kavuşan yazar sonraki yıllarda tekrar soruşturmalara maruz kalmıştır. Aziz Nesin ile beraber kurduğu Düşün Yayınevi’ni yöneten Kemal Tahir, 1960 yılından sonra tamamen edebiyata yönelmiş ve geçimini sağlamıştır. 21 Nisan 1973 yılında geçirdiği kalp krizi sebebiyle İstanbul’da yaşamını yitirmiştir.
