How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are different connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.


A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or a misfire while in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. The good news is they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly if you're looking at a Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of problems in your car. It's a vital component of your Audi's transmission, as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This is the same across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find good ones in wrecking yards.
